Your LI always stays by your side, unless you slept with Isabella first and then it's glitched to have Varric say Isabella regardless of your relationship with her or your standing with your actual LI. I had Merrill at my side at the end. Nothing else was said because it leaves room for DLC and an expansion, I suppose.

Although saying this I didn't get the nice conversation with him after Danrius either. He was just like, pissy.

I got the achievement with Merrill, and even though her final quest was bugged, I got the achievement after I kissed her in the final battle. It should be the same for Fenris.

I played through that quest yesterday on 100% rivalry. He gets pissy after the 'Alone' quest if Hawke is a rival. However the conversation should move on and be almost the same as the friendship romance, ending in a kiss if Hawke flirts with him. If that didn't happen it sounds like something's gone wrong before this point and the romance was no longer active by the time you got to the Gallows scene later on.

Go have to get him to 100 friendship/rivalry AND give him both gifts. Apparently you need to side with the Templars if he is in a rivalry romance but can side with anyone if he is in friendship romance.
This is not true. Fenris will remain at your side if you side with mages and he's at 100 rivalry/friendship. You don't have to be in a romance.
Also, if you sleep with anyone else in Act 2, it ends Fenris's romance.
Tips on getting to 100 rivalry?.. Just bring him to mages vs templars quests and side with the mages. You'll get there quickly. Also if you contradict him in the conversations it will escalate the rivalry as well.

Are you sure that Fenris will remain at your side if he's at 100% rivalry (and you've done his quests + given his gifts) and you side with the mages? On my next playthrough I want to try him as a rival... but there's no way I'm siding with the templars again (did it once as a reload for the unlock and I never want to side with them again). I don't want to lose Fenris as a companion in the end though... so it'd be great to know for sure if you can have a rivalry with Fenris and still side with the mages without him leaving.

Untrue, I rivalmanced him and played both sides (mage and templar) from a save and he stayed with me either way. He was 100% and fully developed though.
The official Guide says that the mage side requires full friendship but then again it also says he'll move in with you so don't belive everything in that thing.

Cool, thank you! A shame that he doesn't move in. *sigh* I've noticed the official guide doesn't give nearly as much info as I'd like. Good to know that it isn't correct about rivalry with Fenris needing to choose templars to keep him.
Now I have the hard decision or rivalmancing Anders or Fenris next playthrough. >_<

I did my "me" run on the first playthrough, he was 100 friend side... as a mage, which was still oddly easy and made sense. It's harder than I thought to annoy him.

And another confirmation that he will stay when at 100% rivalry and friendship, when done the last part of Questioning of beliefs.
Edit: Also, the guide sucks. I sincerely hope the next official one will be better.
