What about this sort of HUD?

Image IPB

It gives you your ammo count in-game, plus lets you instantly see the health of your squadmates. It obviously wouldn't have the first-person perspective but would be nice to zoom in and look through Shepards eyes when holding the spacebar to see the entire HUD.

whilst on the subject of hud, can we go back to ME1's circle cross-hairs, i hate the red one in ME2 it's far less elegant.

oh and that "remote" thing in those screens above is horrifying.

Mass Effect 1 was mainly an RPG with slacking shooter mechanics, so a circular crosshair didn't damage it's pacing much. But ME2 moved on to more tight shooter mechanics, hence the "mainstream" crosshair design, so in ME3 you can't go without a similar reticule if you want any precision while aiming. You don't ruin one of the central gameplay nuances just to make it more "elegant" imo.

And I never associated the beta HUD with a remote control before people started saying so on the boards.

funny - reach has one. a small, blooming, circular reticule that looks a lot nice than a nasty big red cross thingy.

What you're moving forward as an argument is simply your own opinion I can't possibly argue against. I told you why it was more practical.

Reach is an FPS - and if I remember correctly, those circular reticules DO have crosshairs on the inside. I think only the shotgun had a clean circle - no need for precision since it's close-range.

@Captain_Obvious_au - Bioware have stated that they're aiming for the HUD-being-the-inside-of-Shepard's-visor approach anyway. Republic Commando was nice while it lasted, but the sensory assault from the bulky UI became too much after a few hours.

I hope Mass Effect stays far away from integrated hubs like Dead Space, I want to be able to see at a glance what's going on with my character without having to turn the camera around them to peek at their glowing lights. I'd like to see the map up in the corner of my screen (fingers crossed that we will have areas that need maps again) Not having an interface is more immersion breaking for me then having one.

But then I'm biased against anything Dead Space since I played it on the PC and the controls were horrible and it's the only game that's ever left me with motion sickness.... and I played Mirror's Edge with no problems!

I think your confusing the two games. In ME2 you can't turn the camera around during combat. its always fixed to the back so I don't see how that would be a problem... I hope they change it though. Anything is better than that tentacles stuff they had in 2. LOl reminds me of.... well nevermind. ;)

I also hope they change this, It feels weird to go from a game like Dead Space 2 where the camera is always the camera unless you're aiming to go to where the camera feels glued to shepard's back

It also sucks when you want to check behind you, (like say to check on a squadmates position) and you pop out of cover. I still get shot despite my shep crouching.

While I loved Dead Space's HUD, I wouldn't want to see it integrated into ME3 for the sole reason that it's the last entry in an already great series. Let's stick with what already works, and what the fans are less likely to complain about.

I'd have to agree with a merger of ME1 and 2. Bring the Life Bar Display back (put with an update to it, to include the way ME2's life system works) but have everything else stay ME2. The reticle in 1 was horrible on a first playthough on Eden Prime and the first mission you do, so I will be praying that it does not return. Plus that reticle only made sense from an RPG point of view, as it got better the more you leveled up that gun skill.

I also would encourage people to read the Developer posts in this thread, they're very informative

Also i would like to see a screen how it looks like now. So we can decide whether we like it or changing it ;)

In my own personal opinion, only the red veins are a bit too intrusive in the screen, but everything else works just fine.

I'm curious to see what they are planning for the replacement of the red veins, since I have no example to show.

Edit: I was thinking about it. What if, instead of the red veins, we had altered movements and vision to show us that Shepard is in a low health condition? Something like she/he acting slowly and imprecisely, not being able to shoot to much, not being able to focus on the enemies, the vision becoming imprecise, duplicated NPCs and stuff like that.

What do you guys think?

Personally I liked ME1 more than ME2 because it was more RPG. So I want an HUD. I don't play ME for an "immersive" experience; I am looking to escape. I really felt like ME2 was moving to far away from the Western RPG experience.

Not a fan. In ME2 any little hiccup in your movement, from accidently pressing A to get into cover too many times, to having your vision slightly obscured can get you killed. Slowing your reaction times wouldn't be fun.

I'm going to have to disagree. While I did think DS and DS2's HUDs were interesting, they didn't need to display nearly the amount of information that ME does.

We need to know info about shields, barriers, health, cooldowns, and the status of our squad mates. Trying to cram all that into visuals would be ridiculous IMO.

That's not to mention that a real soldier with this tech would have a lot of information being fed into his HUD. It would be common to see ranges, altitudes and all sorts of other info.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

It's last game in the series and would be odd if they changed it drastically.

Except that I personally think ME2's HUD was horrible. In fact, ME1's was fine: it was one of the most flawless aspects of the original game in fact. It was already a case of "if it ain't broke don't fix it" in the first game... and then they went and "fixed" it and made it terrible, IMO.

Please just bring back the one from ME - ME 2's HUD is just too minimal for my tastes.
