Carver. He's an @sshole and much better than that sister who doesn't question you.

I also prefer Carver. Bethany is sweet and made me want to protect her, but Carver is just a typical guy and the sibling rivalry endeared him to me.

Never tried to play as a mage. So I guess Bethany. I always protect my little sister. IRL too. :)

Carver! Yes, Bethany is sweet, but I also found her to be a bit shallow, and her personality was just dull. She didn't have any character development either. I felt protective of her, but I prefer Carver. I felt the need to protect him too, but had a lot more respect for him. He is a very believable character with personal conflicts that I think others can relate to, inside or outside the DA universe. It's true that he needs an attitude adjustment, but that is half the fun with his character, being able to talk some sense into him and get an actual reaction out of him about it.

They both suck, since they either Die, join templars/Circle, or become a Grey Warden.

After seeing both, Carver so far, but I have yet to see what Bethany could be after act 1, becaues she died the first time around.

I like them both equally. Carver because he's an ass and you can really insult him with conversation options.

Bethany because she's sweet and cute and just as adorable as Merrill.

Which is exactly why I hate her.

Bethany, always, but one time i made a custom mage Hawke and Bethany's appearance turned out so ugly that i was glad she was killed, even then, Carver and Leandra were so ugly that i couldn't wait for them to be killed.

Carver was awesome because of his flaws. I always found myself trying to reassure him that his role was important, because it really was! Of course he's going to feel inferior and lash out when he doesn't share the gift that his siblings do. Of course he isn't going to always express that in the nicest way because, you know, he's human. Carver didn't have a good sense of his place in his family or the world, and I enjoyed that aspect. He was a very complex character compared to Bethany, and even though he got on my nerves a few times, it was worth the effort to see to his future (making him a Grey Warden) and reach an understanding with him. Etc... In short, Carver's storyline was great.

Hell, even if you hate him, I'm sure he makes for an interesting rival...

After playing both and going with all possible endings (grey warden or templar/circle) I like Circle-Bethany the most. I felt very protective of her and when she wailed over orsino's dead body (after i ripped him in two... i sided with the templars) i felt like i just wanted to reach through the screen and hold her. Protecting her from meredith and finally reconciling with her (despite the fact i slaughtered all the other mages) really endeared her to me.

A close second is Warden-Carver. Joining the wardens and when he teams up with you at the end really helped to develop his character. He finally became the man he wanted to be and the brother my Hawke wanted.

Templar-carver has almost no game-time and Warden-bethany sounded like a zombie

Carver is far more interesting to have around.
him arguing with you all through act 1 is great. the whole resentful and jealous little brother thing has a much more interesting dynamic to it. plus he's far more active in conversations throughout act 1.

Bethany is nice and all but she's bland and boring as hell.
used her throughout act1 on my rogue and she barely did anything in conversations, always agreed with me, got full friendship like right away. all she ever did was go "hey im a mage lol" when a quest called for it.

also bethany has really creepy mummy hands

I liked Carver better he had more of a personality to him than Bethany did. Bethany was sweet, but just went with whatever Hawke wanted. Carver seemed to question your every action. His resentment and rivalry made me love him.

Bethany all the way, I want to punch Carver in my 2nd playthrough as a mage. I want to break his nose and get the blood streak on Hawke's face with Carver's blood. Bethany's sweet and cuddly, I can't let her get harmed :(

Carver's got a chip on his shoulder which makes him really fun to interact with, especially if you're playing a female Hawke.

Bethany is sweet. She's not without some attitude but for the most part, she makes you want to protect her.

Both siblings are good for the emotions they can provoke.

Well. I can say this. I played completely through as a warrior the first time and lost my sister to the Circle. When Cullen came for her I tried to start WW3 to back him down, but the game wouldn't let me. When they threatened the Circle I DID start WW3 and had my sister next to me where she belonged.

When I played a mage and Carver joined the Templars I was not satisfied. I reloaded, took him into the deep roads without Anders and watched him die. THAT, is the only satisfaction I got from that mouthy brat.

Bethany all the way.

I've yet to experience Carver for more than those initial 10 minutes before he gets crushed violently by the ogre but it sounds like he's an interesting companion to have around and I will definitely try going as mage at some point.

Bethany dying in the Deep Roads is one of those video game moments I will not soon forget, I really felt kind of sad mostly on account of Hawke losing her sister like that and then having to deliver the bad news. Of course it doesn't help that Bethany had been in charge of the healing in my party up until that point but it was honestly an emotional moment and this is a rare occurrence for me and for that Bethany will likely remain my favourite.
