Bethany.
I just wanted Hawke to hug her and promise s/he'll never let another Templar split them apart ever again.
I hope we meet up with her in DA3 looking for her big brother/sister.
Who do you prefer? Carver or Bethany?

I like them both fine, but Carver is a billion times more interesting.

Carver's not bad for his rivalary toward Hawke cause he feels like he doesn't and can't stand out for fear of drawing attention to mage Hawke and Bethany, but I prefer Bethany. I like the idea of being the protective older brother/sister. When Bethany is taken by the templars I really wish I could fight them to keep her around. One of my biggest problems about the ending is that only the romance sticks around, I think it would be cool if Bethany or Carver stuck around also. Bethany even says and I'm kind of paraphrasing that after her time in the circle she understood why Hawke and the rest of the family moved so much to protect her from the templars.

I liked Bethany, but she didn't have much personality and the twenty minutes or so I've had with Carver have been much more amusing. I was still upset when she died, though.

Bethany hands on.
However if I had to choose Carver, I like Grey Warden Carver. Templar Carver is a whiny little emo kid who can't stand to be number 2.

I thought this was funny: Grey Warden Carver comes across as more well adjusted as Templar Carver. Mean while Grey Warden Bethany comes damned near close to being a wreck and it's Circle Bethany who's the well adjusted one.cast2007 wrote...

GW Carver. Just more interesting and the reunion during the final battle was very nice.

Carver.
He, with all of his issues and insecurities, felt realistic and fleshed out to me.
It was his character arc and development that I enjoyed most. Even more so if he becomes a Grey Warden. He matures from a teenage brat with no sense of direction into someone who is able to put everything - the Wardens, templars, mages, what has been said and done between Hawke and him - behind him out of genuine want to help his sister/brother.

Carver. I liked that he and Hawke could be awful to each other a lot of the time but still look out for each other. Bethany felt bland, like she was only there to be fridge stuffing. At least Varric liked her.

Bethany is a little bit too perfect for me. She doesn't feel like a realistic character to me.
Carver, on the other hand, was a character with some serious flaws and personal issues. He was by far way more interesting to talk to than Bethany was.
So yeah, I prefer Carver.

To be honest: I wish Bethany was just a friend of the family rather than your sister. That way I could've romanced her:wub:
That said, I prefer Bethany. I haven't played through the game with a mage yet though, so I have no idea how Carver will act from starting in kirkwall and on. I rather doubt he'll become my new favorite over Bethany though.

I haven't finished my mage run yet (almost there though), but I did finish being a Rogue and had Bethany become a grey warden. I didn't mind her character but didn't like her only letter in act2 being resentful of becoming a warden. She wanted to come with me to deep roads, I didn't force her in a sense. Being the oldest and having two young brothers in real life, I can connect more with Carver than with Bethany. But I'm glad my real brothers are not brooding like Carver... ehehe

Bethany, Carver was too much of a ****** and I've had to put him in his place more than once during my mage playthrough, especially when he tried to blame Bethany's death on me.

Bethany. Carver is just a whiny, jealous douchebag.
You save him from a pack of blood mages, and the first thing he thinks about is "being in your shadow."

Bethany. Good sense in that girl's head. Carver needed to grow up and be a man.

I couldn't stand Carver, but at the same time I can understand why he had such a bad attitude towards his older sibling. Varric calling him "Little Hawke" helped out a lot, I'm sure.
Bethany is ok, but I'm going pro-templar on my playthrough where she is alive, so we'll see how it works out this time. Last time she died because I wanted to play a mage the first time through.

Carver has that whole sibling rivalry going on but as a guy who has 3 little sisters got to love Bethany because I can see a little bit of one of them there.

I think the reason why was becuase of their personalities. Carver was always in Hawke's shadow and needed a place to grow on his own. Becoming a Grey Warden as bad as it seems allows him to do so and gives him a cause to fight for. Carver becoming a Grey Warden was probably the best thing for him. Instead of being Carver, Hawke's brother, he's now Carver Hawke, Grey Warden. If he became a Templar he'd still be stuck in Hawke's Shadow and his resentment would only grow.
Bethany on the other hand just wanted to be a regular girl. The last thing she wants is to drafted into a life against an implacable foe and doomed to a life of warfare. By sending her to the cirlce, while bad allows her to see her family once in a while (her mother really) and gives her a support group in which she has people that she can relate to.

I've only played through the game once and I disliked carver from the moment we escaped Ferelden. He's unreasonable, whiny, and constantly tries to pick a fight with you, which is unwise since you're always quite capable of beating the crap out of him. No matter what you say to him, he accuses you of being a jerk. (I seriously wish I could knock him out when he makes that comment later in the game about it being your fault that your mom got dismembered. You don't even get to respond to it.)
And to top it all off, he took the first opportunity to join the templars just because I didn't want to spend a minute longer with him than I had to. That meant that he spent the majority of my game as a greyed out figure on my character select screen. What a useless douche. I'm just starting my next game, and already I feel better about having Bethany live than Carver.

Bethany. She's kind, funny, ladylike, innocent and curious. She's always there for her brother and her mother and she's quite useful with her spells. She makes a decent hybrid healer before you get Anders and she's pretty strong when it's time to do the final battle. I found her to be the strongest elemental mage from my whole group. I always refuse to make her a Warden. She's way better in the Circle.
Carver, on the other hand is confused and still searches for himself. Some of his lines are funny, but the fact he's so much your rival right from the start doesn't help you to like him at all. He's like a second Fenris in my Female Mage playthrough. Always disagreeing with me. I'm thinking about ruining his life and sending him to the Wardens. I wouldn't like to have any nephews or nieces from that ******.
