Carver comes off as a brat I know, but he is basicly going through his rebelious teen phase with Hawke as the person he feels he needs to break free from, he simply wants to make his own fortune and not be weighted down by magic or overshadowed by Hawke. cant really blame him and his most redeeming quality is that he´ll fiercly protect Hawke despite being disgruntled.
Also Hawkes aggressive response to Carvers accusation that Hawke did not do enough to protect Bethany is one of the most goose bumps worthy moment in the entire game, it was absolutely priceless and Lady Hawke portrays it magnificently.
