I was hoping for some tech advice, before I go throw my computer through a window...

I
play on Windows XP, through Boot Camp. Windows was having some seperate issues, so I
had to uninstall and re-install Windows, which also meant re-installing
DA: Origins and Awakening.

Saved games imported with a flash drive, and I figured I'd be golden. Ready to fight Mother and finish the game.

For some reason, whether I play my old saves OR start a new game, everything slows to a crawl.

The
main page runs fine, and loading is the same, but as that "tribal
tattoo" circle spirals toward the screen at the end of loading, it
starts slowing down. And then everything stays slow.

Even in
the Keep, it takes me 30-40 seconds just to get over to Ohgren. Outside,
it takes 10 seconds for my Mage to finish putting on Rock Armor.

I've
re-installed the game twice, and other games play fine (Mass Effect 2).
It's just Dragon Age that apparently wants to drive me insane.

I
unstalled the drivers, and re-installed those, and it VERY STRANGELY
ran perfectly fine for a couple of hours. But then the same problem
started up again.

Do you know about any drivers that work more effectively with the game? It seems like the graphics driver is the issue, right?

Thank you for any help you can give!

A few observations:

1) You're only running XP SP2. I believe it's up to SP3 these days, right?
2) I would suggest you likewise make sure DirectX is up to date. It's patched every four months or so.
3) To advise on Nvidia drivers, we'd need to know what version you're using now.
4) Massive, sudden drops in frame-rate can sometimes indicate overheating.

Curious as to what your issue with Windows was.

1) I suppose that could be an issue, but I don't believe I had updated to SP3 previously either. I'm fairly certain I never went past SP2.

2) I'll check on the DirectX drivers when I get home. But I installed the DirectX that came with the Origins disc when I installed the game each time (up to about 5 installs now....)

3) 266.58 WHQL. I am using the most recent driver for Nvidia, though I have also tried completely removing 266.58 with 3rd-Party software and installing 2 earlier versions. One time, it seemed like it was working fine, but then started chugging again when I restarted the game. And then I just turned if off and left to cry in the corner...

I am fairly certain DA ran for me on a previous Nvidia driver, because I hadn't updated the driver for a while, though I am unsure which one, and am wary to go through the entire, crazy-long list until I find one...

4) Framerate drop is consistent through the whole game, not sporadic, right from the start. As if my computer can't handle it, chugging along, always slow. Even though, obviously, I got through DA:O just fine and was close to finishing Awakenings without almost any issues.

Also tried Bioshock last night, and it played flawlessly. So it has to be something with the game's engine, and its interaction with the Nvidia drivers, right?

And, to answer your Windows question: I should have mentioned the specific issue previously, I apologize. It had nothing to do with the game. Issues with the wireless card's interaction with Windows, I messed up a driver install for the wireless card, and that necessitated a full re-install.

In hindsight, I could have waited a week and finished Awakenings first...... URRRRGGGG!!!!

Consider: You're using a fairly new (Jan 2011) video driver but Windows is about three years out of date (no SP3). Hmmmm....

EDIT:  And, of course, the game actually says it requires SP3... just sayin'.

Hmmm... that's annoying, for sure. DAO uses its own engine, of course, so Bioshock comparisons aren't 100% apples to apples, as it were. Could you list what graphics settings you're using, both in game and in the Nvidia control panel (is Nvidia set to "Let the application decide" under 3D mode?)

Also, what patch are you running on the game?

Also, an older Nvidia drivers can be found here:

I also tried Mass Effect 2, which I was hoping was a more even comparison, and it played fine as well. I'm unsure if that means anything, though, as they both could have separate engines, even if they're both from Bioware.

I'll be able to check the graphical settings later today, and I'll post those. Though I get the feeling that I'm going to end up removing my Nvidia driver and installing the one you posted. Thanks for that, by the way.

Back in a little while.

IT WORKED!

Thank you. I installed the older Nvidia driver, and everything worked fine. I finished the game, and can now start on Morrigan's DLC.

Thank you for staying with me through this whole CRAZY ordeal. Really couldn't have done it without your help.

IT WORKED!

Thank you! Installing the older Nvidia driver solved the problem completely. I guess I hadn't gone far enough back on the Nvidia Drivers list. I finished the game, killed that creepy Mother lady, and now I can start on Morrigan's DLC.

Thanks for sticking with me through this whole ordeal. Couldn't have done it without your help!
