Until Meredith shows up at the end with the magical JRPG sword of doom, is there anything in the story suggesting that she has possession of the Deep Roads idol?

Did someone just think that would be cool?  Or is it supposed to somehow make the Deep Roads adventure more relevant to the overall story?  Is Meredith's over-the-top reaction to mages supposed to be explained by the Idol?

I'm assuming you mean Meredith and not Bethany, unless sending her off to be a Grey Warden shifts the game around GREATLY.

Actually, you see her with the sword starting the third act. Varric's brother is also babbling about selling the relic to 'that woman' and how it was a mistake, I believe.

It was there... just VERY subtle. The two seconds of seeing the Idol, with it's creepy skull face, don't really let you recognize that it's the same skull face on Meredith's sword.

Though I'm sure someone out there noticed that. (I didn't until my second play-through)

EDIT: There was also the random hole in her sword, which I DID notice on my first play... I just didn't make any sort of connection to the hole/ring in the Idol.

But to answer your question, yes, there were hints throughout the game that her actions were becoming more and more irrational and her thought process unstable. Even her most loyal Templars noted the changes throughout the years. The idol explains where she acquired the power she has at the end, but it only augmented the paranoia that was there.

EDIT: My bad. So sorry. I thought I was in another forum, obviously.

When you confront Bartrand in Act 2 he mumbles about how he knew he shouldnt have sold the idol to THAT woman. I didnt make the connection until she mentioned it was pure lyrium in the final battle but I was extremely intrigued when I saw she was packing a new sword in the beginning of Act 3.

This is a non-spoiler board. You should take this to the Campaign and Story forum.

Again, all huge spoilers. They really need to move this thread.

You're in the wrong forum buddy. Spoilers are allowed here.

It didn't look like a new sword to me at the very begining of act 3 I was paying close attention to it. The one she has at the begining of that act is thinner than the sword of doom she breaks out at the end. I am comparing it to the one she uses to kill that qunari mage near the end of act 2.

A little OT here but that part is now my favorite. The look on Meredith's face whent he grand cleric tells her to go back to the gallows and cool off. I have seen that look before and in my experience is usually followed by a tantrum in a store isle. No candy for you!!

Seeing as how there was such a big deal about the idol (look at how the scene involving its discovery plays out - the camera angles and music are a dead giveaway), I had a feeling it'd come up again later. And it did with Bartrand. When the 'lovable' dwarf mentioned how he should have never sold it to THAT woman (I think there was even a mention of how she was cold and wouldn't do what it wanted), I kind of started thinking.

Who's cold, stubborn, a woman and important to the main plot? Anything involving Varric I pretty much treated as subtle ques towards the plot as a whole.

She uses a regular Ferelden Broadsword during the end of Act 2. Then she is wielding the idol sword all the way through Act 3.

I kind of made the connection after hearing Bartrand's rant about how he shouldn't have sold the idol and then described her. When I saw the sword in Act 3, it made complete sense. She is a templar, after all. And they are super addicted to lyrium.

If you talk to Coriff the Bartender in Act III, he tells you a templar was in the hanged man earlier and the templar spoke of Meredith being locked in her room "talking to her herself". (like bartrand)
