I haven't seen one of these topics as of yet (although I do not check the forums very often to be honest), but I was wondering what people thought of the main characters in Origins and now DA2, basically the difference between being your own character (The Warden) vrs being Hawke (DA2). I personally miss having my own "unique" feel as the warden, even though you can customize hawke's appearance, and since the game has the feel of building your story, it seemed slightly lackluster for me by being someone else in a sense.
Just wondered what everyone else thought.

well, in terms of linear storyline there isn't much to say (win for warden), but since you got an actuall voice over and individual dialoge options depending on you "answer style", plus you very own handling with companions (recruit? not recruit? even kill them?) i think hawke got a point as well, so it's a 1:1 in terms of that. the only real luckluster in DAII is the lengh of the actual game... so DA:O wins 2:1
don't get me started on the skill and combat system thou, since even if both games are called DA they have their very own feeling, so i wouldnt even compare that^^

personal i preferred the warden because you had more choices with regards to how he portrayed himself, Hawke is either heroic, sarcastic or angry. I loved being extremely rude to people in origins, nothing made me laugh more than when the warden offered that beggar in Orzammer 'a generous kick in the face' that being said I do prefer the fact that Hawke is voiced it was always a little wierd the warden never said anything in the cutscenes

I thought this was a combat vs thread haha. In that scenario my Hawke would demolish my Warden.

Warden has almost no personality. It doesn't really matter which dialogue option you pick. Going with Hawke here.

The excellent female VO does bring Hawke to life in a way that can't even be compared with the Warden. Despite the lower number of dialogue options, and especially thanks to the sarcastic options and the improved dialogue wheel (with icons) that allows you intuitive control over Hawke's intent, she has a whole lot more personality too.
I'd say the Warden has a more interesting story, given that he actually gets to visit a large number of different areas and wide-ranging important events, exotic monsters and epic encounters, as opposed to just a single town and a few caves that all look the same. But Hawke does win in personality. As for combat power, that's fairly obvious. If the Warden is any other class than a mage, then Hawke would win. If the Warden was a mage, Hawke wouldn't stand a chance. Due to the obvious changes to gameplay.
Needless to say I'm a fan of not always tinkering with balance for the sake of gameplay, when the lore demands something else. In DAO, mages were every bit as insanely terrifying and incredibly powerful as the lore claimed. In DA2, not so much. I do like the warrior / rogue buffs though, since this time around they're actually interesting to play. But now I'm going beyond Hawke vs. Warden so I'll stop here.

Hawke wins by miles for me in regards to storytelling. GW was just an average dragon fighting hero and I grew out of those stories in my early teens. Hawke's destiny was unclear if you didn't read spoilers. Hawke had family/friend/Kirkwall problems that continued way past Act 1 giving him/her a sense of belonging to something greater than just being a hero in an average run-of-the-mill heroic quest.

if it's in terms of combat, my warden mage would demolish my hawke mage. Mana Clash = dead Hawke, next enemy.

alot of awesome things would come from my Hawke before my warden was able to shuffle into place for a shield bash.

Hawke no doubt, much better storyline, and i personally prefer staying in kirkwall to places of ferelden, it gave a sense of belonging to hawke.
And well having hawke actually talk in conversation was a massive win, although i liked the origin stories hawkes is much better.
So Hawke FTW

Warden, hands down. I feel that I've been on a journey with him, and watched Hawke from a distance (though loved the show). Also my Amell could take his cousin to the cleaners

Warden for me. I enjoyed the decision making much better. Letting entire towns be destroyed or killing every companion gave the story more depth and consequences. The Hawke storyling seemed simplified and lacking to me.
Also the Gray Warden got to visit several different enviroments instead of running around a city forever.

Character-wise, I prefer Hawke.
Gameplay-wise, the choices you could make in DAO are far superior to the ones in DA2.

I can understand the appeal of wanting to hear your character actually speak but with Hawk it is kind of like you are given a character to play and don't really have all that much choice. Alot of the time it doesn't seem to really matter which dialogue choice you even select. It is just a different version of the voice acting with little change of the outcome. Seems like such a downgrade compared to Origins where a different dialogue choice really can change the plot.

Well-said.
If DA3 takes Hawke galivanting all over the world, it might be the best of both worlds. One can hope.
