When the autorun for Dragon Age comes up, I click on Configure, and it tells me I won't be able to run, because I don't have the correct graphics card drivers, even though I have the most updated ones. So I come off of the Configure screen and click Play... It loads up just fine, but there's no text on the buttons or anything.. so I'm thinking.... WTF!?!?!? Can anyone give me a solution to this problem?

WRONG !

That's nothing but a pittance' worth of required data!

For instance, onboard VRAM is the absolute LEAST importan video criteria!

Preliminary diagnostic information

PCs are not *anything* at all like game console systems.  There is almost nothing that is truly "standard" between various branded PCs, making the game developers' jobs very difficult, and resulting in warning labels attached to game boxes for those games that have serious requirements.

In case you have misunderstood how to evaluate your PC compared to that game box label, we have to start from here.  Fill it all in.

Basic Hardware Specification Chart (Empty so far)

Processor Manufacturer: AMD / Intel
Processor Name / Type: Athlon 64 / Pentium / C2D / dual core / quad, etc.
Processor Speed:  ?.? Ghz (or AMD Performance Number)
Operating System / Service Pack: WindowsXP with SP #?, Vista ? (Oh, no!)
System RAM: ? ? GBs (MBs, if less than 1024)
Video (GPU) Manufacturer: ATI / Nvidia (only those two are supported, PERIOD)
Video Card Model: (examples) Radeon HD 3650 / Geforce 8600 GT
Video Card Driver Version: Catalyst ?.? / Nforce ??.?? (use numbers, not the word "latest")
Video Card onboard RAM: ? ? ? MBs
Sound Card Manufacturer:
Sound Card Model:

All video cards must have a WORKING version of Dx9.0b included.  The FXes did not have Dx9 at all, but rather included a totally independent, and very slow, advanced Shader that was only semi-compatible with Dx9.0's SM3.  The first Geforce to include the actual Dx9 was the 6000 generation, and they went all the way to Dx9.0"c" then.

A little bit more specific please.

What type of Processor? Intel Core 2 Duo? AMD Phenom?

What make model of video card? ATI 4870? Nvidia 260?

If can, go to start>run and type in DXDIAG and hit enter, let it update (the green bar at the lower left) and click on the " save all information" box, save that to wherever you want, open it with word/note pad etc, copy it's contents and paste them here.

That will let us know exactly what you have.

Sorry bud but that video card alone (Fx5500) will not play this game, even on low settings. I'd be willing to bet the processor would not work either.

Honestly,  your only solution is a new PC.

Well that sucks. If I'd known that, even though I've got the minimum requirements, I wouldn't have been able to play it, I'd have just got it on 360, though the gameplay looks to be worse...

I wonder if we have a Troll attempt here?  That's a five year old failure card there that would have been failing at everything newer than four years ago already.

The CPU is far less of a problem, because AMD's CPUs were much farther ahead for gaming than the Intel CPUs were, all the way back to the Slot-A Athlon 600s, and just kept building on that lead until the C2D finally replaced the failed P4s.

Yeah,

The minimum specs are....

OS: Windows XP with SP3 CPU: Intel Core 2(or equivalent) running at 1.4Ghz or greater

AMD X2(or equivalent) running at 1.8Ghz or greater RAM: 1GB or more VIDEO: ATI Radeon X850 128MB or greater

NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT 128MB or greater

DVD ROM (Physical copy)

20 GB HD space

They are on the box.

Your failure to read the box, as well as the hardware's abject failure to run the game.  The System Requirements don't allow for total and absolute crap like an FX as minimum, not by a long shot.

I don't think so.

I do agree with the AMD comment, I was an avid fanboy (since the k6-2)until the C2D fiasaco happened. However, his MD 64 does not meet the X2 requirment. It would be a stretch with a Clawhammer.

Sorry, but I'm not that familiar with computers, so, stupidly, I assumed that my 256 MB graphics card would be good enough for a game that requires only a 128 MB graphics card.

Actually, there are XPs running the game, although not with anything as puny as an FX, and many lower end single core A64s, although not with aplomb.  Even some P4/3.0 CPUs are managing to struggle along in-game, again, as long as the video card is decent.

Bioware *WAY*  exaggerated the CPU requirements, while not quite as proportionally off, underestimated video demands.  The minimum 6600 GT, for instance,   seems to have disappointed everyone who has mentioned it around these forums, as has the X1550, to a far worse extent.

Like most relatively recent games, about 50% of the perceived performance is covered by the video card.

You can look at the rest of the comparison you hadn't paid attention to HERE:  www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php

(And do remember what I said about the 6600 GT not really having proved to be a practical choice.)

When I tell you my car's gas tank has 10 galons / 40 liters, you at least know that my car is either small or very economical. 256MB graphics card is much less information.

Get this way of thinking out of your head once and for all. The amount of memory a graphics card has is not a valid indicator of how good it is. The memory of a graphics card is analogous to the RAM of the entire computer. Would upgrading your machine to 8GB of RAM do you much good? Except in extremely specific applications, the answer is no and the same is true of the memory for your graphics card.

I feel sorry for people with a GeForce 8200 or something who look at the 6600 in the requirements and assume they're all set because they don't know Nvidia's and ATI's nomenclature (the second digit matters), but you simply didn't read the box carefully enough -- it should be fairly obvious that a 5500 is worse than a 6600.

The amount of memory has nothing to do with it.
The card specific generation and series is the issue. You have a 5500 (which was a very, very poor card that Nvidia made serious mistakes with. It turned out to be less capable and more expensive than the geforce 4ti it was supposed to replace ( and how old is that? ) You have the mid to low end of a graphics range that was a complete failure until a new chop fab brought out the FX5900 which briefly was competitive with the ati 9800pro.

Your processor is a single core athlon so does not meet the dual core requirements of the game (x2)

Your PC, in terms of gaming is obsolete and has been for some 3 years. It does not come even close to the minimum requirements and is not capable of running this, or many other modern games at acceptable detail and frame rates.

Actually, folks, I had three different FXes back in the time period before Half Life's Valve developers showed them up for the scam that they were.  I had an FX 5700, an FX 5900, and there is still a PCX 5900 in my shop system that I use for doing Hdd setup, copying CDs / DVDs, various utility chores, only (that was the PCIe version of the 5900).  If the tests were limited to Dx8 level, the 5900 was roughly on a par with the Radeon 9700 Pro, perhaps, but not if there were Dx9 shaders involved.

The Radeon 9800s were supreme, and only the FX 5950 Ultra, at some really ridiculous high price, could match the lower end 9800s in Dx8, but still couldn't do as well in Dx9 as the worst Radeon 9000 Dx9 card, the 9600 SE.

correct Gorath and that was a genuine typo on my behalf. I did indeed mean that the 5900 was briefly competitive (performance, not price ) with the 9700pro because I recall toying with the idea of buying one. Instead I went for the first of 2 9700pros I bought followed by a 9800SE ( which I unlocked the closed pipelines on ) and a 9800pro. All of which I still have in my drawer of expensive nostalgia ;)
