So I am an elf fighter/mage and level 3 fighter and so its time for another specialization point.  I put my first 4 points in longsword and long bow (BGtutu) because of the elven racial bonus thac0 fot those.  My question is what weapon style should I take?  I have been primarily an archer up to this point due to 19 Dex and so I am thinking single weapon style might most beneficial so I don't have to go into inventory to switch off-hand weapon or shield to use bow.  The double crit chance and the +1/2 AC look pretty nice.  I was wondering if I would miss out on any really nice shield if I did this or if there is any other reason to go sword and shield or two weapon?  I know this is a spoiler section, but if there is a nice sword/shield you want to mention, please don't say where to find it.  Thanks much.

Single weapon style is fine in BG, not a good idea if you continue to BG2.

Thanks for the reply. Why is it fine in BG1, but not BG2?

Well from memory & opinion;
In BG1 there are two unique longswords better than +1. One adds elemental damage and the other adds damage for certain types of enemy so dual-wielding gives an extra attack per round but not much else. The best shield will reduce your AC by 3, single weapon style gives 2 plus the attack bonus so just a defensive/offensive trade-off there (particularly as the added missile protection can be offset by at least 3 items of clothing or by spells).

In BG2 there are shields that will reduce AC by 3 more points, or grant immunities etc. There are something like a dozen longswords with other abilities (defensive, offensive, etc) so two weapons outweigh the AC.Some enemies in BG2 are immune to critical hits too.

Also, if you dual wield other weapon types there are other benefits available, e.g.
- Weapons granting a 2nd additional attack per round while in BG you'd just(!) get the one extra.
- Weapons granting additional spell slots or strength bonus.

It all depends how you want to play. A hit/run style with a bow or a henchman playing shield means you could avoid melee most of the time.
