How do you tolerate the mining?

I got ME2 on release and played it through one time.  I wasn't particularly impressed, I know a lot of people felt the character missions were great but for me my crew for the most part seemed like a whiny bunch with a lot of "daddy" issues.

I did start a second playthrough but I just couldn't finish it.  It was the mining that did me in.  I just couldn't tolerate it.  It was difficult to get through on the first playthrough, but it was just too much to have to go through again.

So, ME2 is the first BioWare game I haven't played through multiple times.  And the thing that really gets me is that it would have been SO EASY to make the mining something that was actually FUN.  Here's how:

You reach a potential mining planet and perform a holistic scan that reveals the mineral potential of the place: rich, good, etc.  You then have an option to "Deploy Mining Crew".  Once done, you receive automatic updates that you can view from a science station letting you know the status of your mining crews and how much of each mineral they've recovered.  When you feel it's time, you return to the planet and load up your resources.  Simple, yes?

The "fun" part comes in because you don't let these mining operations be static.  You'll occasionally get emergency messages that might be something like "We're under attack by Batarian slavers!!" or "We've been discovered by a thresher maw, please help!"  or some other effect that would have a negative impact on your mineral recovery.  And instead of having all of these events be completely scripted, they would be determined randomly to add a bit of serendipity otherwise missing from most Bioware games.

I've been told that there was a DLC that "improved" the mining by increasing the scanning speed, but the entire mechanic just smacked so much of laziness to me that it has, still a year later, too much of an intimidation factor to revisit ME2.  So if you're someone who loves ME2, how do you manage to get through the mining?

You're idea would be really cool, but, frankly, after a while I found the mining mini-game to be relaxing in an odd sort of way. I don't particularly enjoy it, but I also don't feel it really detracts from the game.

Er I don't tolerate it: save editor, or by commands through the coalesced.ini? Probably the same for a lot of people.

Can't remember the last time I scanned a planet other than for a mission.

But it's not that bad in any case, if I had to do it, there wouldn't be much problem - just scan for the upgrades you need and leave it at that.

Easy: I enjoyed it and it's a minor aspect of the game.

I honestly think using a good PC gaming mouse with a quick adjustment to the scroll speed must take all the pain out of scanning. It takes me less time to scan a whole planet than it took to drive full-speed to most mission objectives in ME1's Mako. I've never scanned in ME2 on the Xbox360, but it must be bad to judge by all the complaints.

I respect your idea, but I think it's too much micromanagement.

I don't mind mining as I never spend too much time on any individual planet mining, also only I do it intermittently on missions.

with title update/patch and research upgrade on the 360 you can scan pretty fast if you press both analogue sticks to the left/right turning the planet at the same time as you move the reticule and scan.

Grunted and told myself "You need to do this for weapon upgrades"

Simple, because every time I start to think ill of it, I remember the Mako and suddenly it seems a lot more fun.

It's grinding for grinding's sake. Grinding is generally pretty relaxing, because it's repetitive and boring.

To the OP: I would tolerate it if the planets were unique or, at the very least, interesting to look at. In reality, though, they're pretty generic and boring.

Funny thing is the developers intended for the minigame to be "sprinkled" throughout the game. Something to do between missions.

Of course the meta-gamers in all of us (me included) decide to do the full brunt of the scanning in the beginning of the game so that WE NEVER HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN! (console player)

Again with that anti-Mako crap? That justification doesn't make any sort of sense, dude.

Yeah, I pretty much just spent 3-4 hours mining every rich planet I could find until I had 300 000 iridium, 200 000 paladium/platinum and like 50 000 eezo...Just so I didnt have to do it again and had the minerals available to research when the research became available.

I usually import characters from ME1 so that helps give a bit of a boost in resources at the start. Then I generally do all my mining at once.. spend one big, long play session dedicated to nothing buy mining and rack up lots of resources. It's not a perfect solution and I do understand why a lot of people dislike the feature but it's not as horrible as many would make you believe. Throw on some of your favourite music for a few hours and knock out your mining all at once.

It's my opinion, I don't have to justify it. I positively loath the Mako, I loath everything about it. If you asked me if I would rather explore a planet in the Mako or break my own leg, I'd say pass the hammer.

Concidering how little time you have to spend actually mining if you are smart about it, you dont need to tolerate it, you just do it to get what you need and leave.

Mining is pretty minimal if you import a L60 and you play as an engineer. Also, if you play on PC, just edit your save file to have 9999999 resources.

I don't mind planet scanning. Don't love it, but I certainly prefer planet scanning than driving the mako around barren waste lands. At least you have to pay constant attention to the little frequency scanner instead of just jam the up arrow key until you get to the anomaly or the debris item. I thought it was an improvement.

Also I did it in short bursts, 2,000 here, 3,000 there and didn't feel the need to accumulate huge amounts of resources. The only time I got 50,000 of something was to purchase the scars fixing machine. Each scanning didn't last more than like 30 seconds.

Perhaps some music playing in the background? Dunno, just a thought, or maybe listen to a podcast and turn it on while mining, or watch tv at the same time?

As for making it more fun, you could have to deploy a team of miners escorted by you through an environment where you either have to fight off mercs or beasts to get them to large outcroppings of minerals. Basically similar to what SolitonMan was saying (I think), but without the micromanaging bit. Thoughts?

Get Gibbed's Save Editor, give yourself 300k everything and nobody's the wiser. Call it Cerberus supplies.

Before Gibbed's SE, I'd go on a scan binge in the beginning of the game until I had 250-300k of every resource to get it out of the way. Then I'd play the game.

and then lets hope it doesn't corrupt something so the save is unuseable in ME3 so you have to replay the entire game to get a savefile.

If it does, then I guess I'm lucky enough to play Mass Effect 2 again.

I understand why you hate it. If I had to go to every planet in the galaxy and kill all the blue suns mercenaries in the game before actually kicking off the story, I would hate the blue suns.
