So a simple question for people knowledgeable about how saved game import works in the serie: does using the editor to change some minor things have a chance to invalidate the file for importing into ME3?

When I say minor things I mean nothings that touches plot flags or anything, just cosmetic things, like importing facial features or using that sexy female npc haircut everyone love, or increasing mineral reserve.

Just how risky is it?

It has been stated repeatedly that any modification of a savefile or the game may result in some corruption, basically an "at your own risk" warning.

OP, it should be ok. It works for half complete ME1 save files-> ME2, so it should be ok for ME2->ME3

Even if the files do end up corrupted he is going to make something like his dragon age 2 save game creator for import so there isn't much to worry about.

What if I've transferred my Xbox 360 save over to PC? Any chance I could run into problems there? The last thing I want to do is mess up my saves for ME3!

that's sort of annoying. Why didn't bioware just give us the option to change certain decisions we had made ? what do they have against that ?

Yep, basically this is why while I have a bunch of saved files that were edited in some form, I also made sure to finish ME2 with several characters that were not edited in any way.

This way if my edited saved files import to ME3... great... if not, no problem cus I have several "clean" saves / characters to import too.

Because then you wouldn't play through ME1 again, so you'd trivialize much of the hard work they put in to make the game replayable. It devalues their efforts, and it's not like they've banned the editor or shut down the saved-files site. They don't mind people changing their saves, but they're proud of what went into what they made.

Again i'd like to remind you that I was talking about using the editor to change shepard hair style and importing facial feature so she looks like the badass swoman she's supposed to be. I never implied using the editor to change plot decision I made.

still waiting on an evaluation of how risky that is.

Don't try to give head morphs or hair style changes to Mass Effect 2 for Xbox 360 using Gibbed. It usually doesn't work and corrupts your save. Changing ME1 choices, giving yourself elements/credits, changing your name, class, paragon/renegade points and background history usually work. At least for me.

Its risky for hair styles and textures. You're basically relying on those files being available in ME3, which is definitely not guaranteed.

But its probably fine. Just reset the head morph in one version of your save and use that if ME3 screams at you about missing files.

My question is...what settings (and where are they) do I change to alter my LI situation for import into ME3? I have two save games from ME2 I want to use for ME3. One has Ash as the ME1 LI and the other Liara. I would like to use both games as the starting point for ME3 imports with various ME2 LI changes: loyal to Ash or Liara, Miranda LI in ME2, Jack, and Tali. I have been scouring the save games (which one is it by the way that gets imported...is it AutoSave.pcsv? ChapterSave.pcsv?) trying to find what setting determines my ME2 LI and cannot find anything.

Thats why you should back up your file(s) before any editing.

:innocent:

Bioware/EA should seriously consider have one place where they keep their saved games: APPDATA, SAVEGAME DIRECTORY, MY DOCUMENTS make up your mind EA and stick with it. Heck they can't even decide what to call their company I have one folder called EA Games for deadspace 2 and another called Electronic Arts for
sims.

Damn you EA you make it extremely difficult for users to have automated backups of their save game directories. Some of us don't want to back up our entire user profile for just a bunch of savegames.

If modified saves won't work, I will find the way to fix them. So no worries.

I guess you do have a point. that sort of makes sense. Although kind of sucks. I've played both games WAY too many times.

Anything that can corrupt a save for Mass Effect 3, can also be fixed with the Editor including any cosmetic changes.

Resources will not carry into Mass Effect 3.

What settings and where are they for changing LIs in ME2? Also, where is the setting for whether or not I handed the Collector Base to Cerberus?

I want to alter my LIs for import into ME3 and I want to use the same saves (I have 3 that I will import into ME3) again and again but changing who my LI is AND I want to change the Collector Base giveaway/distruction decision.

I have been looking (Gibbed Editor v 25) and can only find settings for LI from ME1, nothing for ME2.

Surely the development team could let us know if there is any obvious issues with it, prior to Mass effect 3s release.
