[Idea/Request] Companion Armor with a Vengeance!

So, how about this? The items just use the companion armor's default mesh. I don't know if it's easy/hard/evenpossibleatall to make it so that no matter what you equip them with, it keeps their orignial model, but if it it is possible, then I think it would be a good idea, but with that model recolored according to the armor piece's material tint.
So, Aveline equips some red steel stuff, so her armor is recolored to look like red steel. Fenris equips some onyx (that's a metal material, right?) stuff, and his armor is recolored accordingly.
Of course, the rub is in whether or not the companion armors have tintmaps to begin with. If they don't, then it can't be too difficult to add them, right? I'm a fair hand at .dds editing, and since the tintmaps are just which color goes where, I'm sure I'd have no trouble making up the tintmaps for the companion pieces.
So, thoughts on whether or not such a thing is even possible? If it is, what sort of work it'd entail? Anything?

I'm a console player so I can't help you, but I think it's quite neat.
Man now I remember doing over my Vindictus dyes a million times to look nice. You never got a choice. You just had to pray for good colors. Generally I headed off to the trading board to look for the colors I wanted and always ended up buying overpriced low-level armour.

I'd prefer new armors and outfits, rather than different colors for the same ones.
I would too, but that's not going to happen yet. What we have are unique outfits for every companion. That's six or seven not-used-anywhere-else meshes just begging to be shown off. What are half of the armor mods on the Nexus? Recolors.
If the companion armors have tintmaps, then recoloring them by material becomes simple. We can already add new materials (with new tints). And suddenly, we have lots of unique armors. Hell, out of all the companions that do change their armor, Merrill's the only one whose model changes. All the others are just re-colors anyway.

This sounds like a great idea, if it's possible.

Thought Process figured out how ages ago (http://social.biowar...index/6523705/1)
It's much cooler than "recoloring" their default outfits, which are all totally lame.

Why bother with this when you can simply allow companions to equip any armor/clothing?

No, I'm well aware of that mod. What I'm asking about is if it's possible to keep the default model when equipping the items, with a material tint applied to make it look different.
It solves the problem of armors without elf models, as well as allowing companions to keep their unique look (which I actually am a fan of, even if you think they're totally lame
Once people start editing models, it'd be awesome if each companion had light/medium/heavy variants of their outfits, but that's a ways down the road.

Only problem is would that require replacing current textures (so you'd have to use console commands to change it around) or is there a way to make it a new item, put it in some merchants shop, buy it and let the companion equip it?

Shouldn't be too hard to make a mod that contains different color versions of companion outfits.

Well, what I'm talking about is having existing items use the unique models when you equip them on a given companion, not about creating new items. Instead of variety through using the armors Hawke model, the item instead uses the companion's model, but with a different tint.
