Blood magic provides 2 mana for 1 health (unupgraded). So let's say a spell costs 30 mana, then in blood magic mode it would cost 15 health. With one item like that, it would be 3 mana for 1 health. With another, 4 mana for 1 health, ect. There's a specific explanation how it works on the first page.
I heard there are also some bugs regarding that stuff.

Ring of Transitional Power causes any spell to cost its full value when cast. I am unaware if there are any other items with issues similar to this item at this time.

Any mage build that doesn't have Unshakable in it is wacky. Even if you pinch pennies enough to buy the ring, there is still all the time you are saving up for it and getting knocked around. In my experience, 100 fortitude gives far more survivability than Arcane Shield/Rock Armor. Spend the two points in Force Mage instead, then spend all the money you would have spent on the ring on other stuff, and without the two extra sustained abilities, your mage isn't saying "need mana!" all the time.

There is not so obvious way to play whole game without Unshakable and that ring. It's requires a decent amount of tactical thinking, constant studying of generals of the past, reading books like Art of War and some rituals and meditation. But, after you grasped that mystical tactical move, you can avoid being knocked back in most of the fights in this game. Here is a complete way of doing it with all exerts I've put behind writing it:

1. Choose your warrior.
2. Order him run into enemies.
3. Stand behind yourself.
4. ....
5. profit1

Uh, that was really exhausting to come up with. Need to meditate now.

SuicidialBaby,

Do you have a guide available for Isabella? I saw that it was "pending" on the OP and as I've just started a mage and never really had Isabella in a group before, I was hoping to give her a shot this time around.

Thanks!

actually, I am currently testing her right now for a hands free build in cohorts with Avaline.

Initial results:
dps: very good
requirements: she is a gold digger. respec required at the moment you aquire her simply to open chests & disarm traps. Another respec @ 11 to improve dps. she requires bonny's silverite +1 stat belt in act 1, ring of the twins in act 2, and constant upgrades without much in return. (varric gives +10% gold throughout act 1)
must rival romance her to prevent atk speed bug and ensure act 3 availability.
taking her to the deep roads is not suggested.

should be posted later today

I was wondering how her DPS would stand up to Varric and noticed right off that there would be a respec needed.  Those were the reason why I didn't play her much the 1st time around.

Varric's personal tree is stupid overpoered, it out shines most every companion's. Her dps atm is better than Varrics, but any dw rogue should since your sacrificing range for damage. Precision is necessary because of the stats issue. And then there is the whole friendship bug forcing you to go rival, which means no lying, no blackmailing, & no swindeling. All of which results in less gold, which is the #1 issue.

Her weapons dont scale like Bianca, doesn't change much till Act 2. She doesn't have an armor rune slot in Act1, so -10% income. She absolutely needs Ring of the Twins from Nexus Golem: -86g, Silverite Belt - 6g, & that Act 3 rogue neck: -100+g.

So far shes a total pain in the ass, but what an ass! You really do pay to have the **** around.

Primal + Force Mage base:
Suggested Group: Avaline, Varric, Anders

1. Mind Blast (default)
2. Chain Lightning
3. Stone Armor
4. Heal
5. Horror
6. Chain Reaction
7. Force Mage - Fist of the Maker
8. Unshakable - Tome from Hubert - Telekinetic Burst
9. Pull of the Abyss
10. Gravatic Ring
11. Barrier
12.
Hex of Torment - Rockwraith fight: Hex of Torment on every cooldown
makes this fight much easier; I ussually spec Anders about 70% Creation;
Upgraded Heroic Aura, Upgraded Glyph of Paralysis, Upgraded Haste, and
just 40% Heal.
13. Stonefist
End Act 1

Lowtown - Buy Tome of Mortal Vessel @ Trinketmonger for +2 attributes
Sundermount - conversation between Templars & Elves - diffuse situation or side w/ elves
Lowtown - Alienage - Night Terrors quest - Pick up 4 Attribute points in the Fade. **
**floating book-1, little barrels-1, red barrels-2

14. Blood Mage - Blood Magic
15. Sacrifice - Tome from Sundermount Dalish Merchant - Grim Sacrifice
16. Hemorrage
17. Paralyzing Hemorrage
18. Petrify
19. Desicate
20. Dispair

I've searched the guide, but I did not found how I should spend my attributes.
I'll defenitly use this build for my next playthrough, but it would be helpful to know in which order I should spend the attribute points or at least with which ratio.

Generally enough willpower to use the gear you want, I dont bother going above 16 till I get the slavers cowl from Fenris' mansion. Then 21 for Deep Roads for Spiral Eye gear. As I dont bother changing out of my RoF gear. Act 2 forces 25-26 willpower max, but since Rune of Valiance from Act 3 in Hands of Fate grants +6 you dont need anything beyond this level.

At level 7, 28 magic for Staff of the Primal Order, 16 willpower, remainder of 3 to use for health or as you please.
Magic should be high enough to keep you at +90% attack after Heroic Aura. It loses value after 42. You will see gains in damage but the points will begin to show more value when used for health.

You should mention in your Anders build section that it's possible to have him use Martyr even if he doesn't have Vengeance active, as long as his tactics tell him to cast it. While manually controlling him, you still won't be able to cast it. Also, I would suggest that you have him cast Martyr whenever his other spells are on cool down, since it reduces their total cooldown by an additional 20% per cast, giving him absurd recharge rates with his main skills (Haste, Heal, Barrier, Crushing Prison, Chain Lightning).

Im not going to suggest out of Vengeace Martyrs. Im currently working on a build around that principle that does it legitimately.

As you wish.

On the Merrill build, do you really suggest going Dex + Cunning for Crit-fishing? I thought that another thread showed that Magic was the superior source of spell damage, not to mention that it's much better for auto-attacks.

once she hits the threshold for health, its gravy.
at the point she begins crit building, youre near end game, so a few more points for the baseline doesnt really do much. with valiant aura from hawke/anders 85% attack is all that is necessary.

Hmm. Could you give me some attribute spreads for what that Merrill looks like, end-game? Like, how much Dex does it eventually reach, same with cunning?

think of it like this
the whole game you have this stack of 50%+ bonus crit damage sitting there.
on average this gets applied 10% of the time through Valiant Aura.
If youre improving crit other ways, brand, hex of torment this would improve its value considerably

since I have yet to tackle what has to be a perfect Merrill build, considering this is a Blood Mage thread, those stats are merely a placebo : )

big numbers look nice

On the other hand, all of those attribute point have a (100-crit chance)% of being worthless when you cast a spell and it doesn't crit, and you lose accuracy when you aren't casting. We can't accurately discern which of the two is superior without actual numbers, though, which is why I asked.

Those points in dex are also wasted whenever you're attacking a target who has been Hex of Torment'd, and since you have two casters with the Entropy tree in your party, that might be very often...

hex of torment, upgraded
the only character that should be upgrading it is Merrill, really.
they really are just a placeholder till the build is done
