I have a question on this build

Primal + Force Mage base


In contrast to the second build you didn't mention the Elixir of Arcane Technique from the Black Emporium.
In both builds you don't suggest to spend a point on the Blood Magic upgrade "Bloodlust".

I don't know all the blood maths, but wouldn't it be easier to buy the Elixir in Act II and get this upgrade to get the 6 mana for every 1 health. I think you could do without one less Bloodmage-Item this way.

Oh and a big thumbs up for the improved build section. Horror und Petrify were to similiar and getting Petrify earlier is a big improvement.

The gold just isnt there if you are planing on unblemished robes or ring of ferryman early in Act 3. Mage Adept Boots or Helm dont take away as much gear wise and generally fit the build. IMO the ability point should be used on another ability not a negligible upgrade.

working on a gear section that will buy 6 willpower points for 14 gold. making 20 the cap.

I like slave for the purposes of fun. Its great on normals, but dont expect it to work on elites. The splatter is a good upgrade subNM. It can wipe the group under FF. There is a discussion on the subject on page 3 or 4.

Attributes :
Since a majority of the Willpower that is required to wear gear is, for the most part, wasted on blood mages, I will show you how to avoid spending more attribute points on willpower than absolutely necessary.

Our final goal for willpower will be 20. Our target goal for prebuffing willpower will be 26 in order to wear Hands of Fate, which will have a Rune of Valiance in them to jump up to 32 willpower so we can wear the Robes of Unblemished Cleanliness. This will save us 12 attribute points which we can use elsewhere.

You will need +6 willpower from these possible sources:

Enchanted Silverite Chain Belt - 5.93g
+1 attributes
+11 defense
+3 magic resistance
(Bonny Lem's Goods, Docks, Unused Passage, Night)

Air of Confidence - Ring - Dragon Age Legends Facebook unlockable
+1 willpower
+7 health

Megan Veal's Locket - Duty - sidequest from The Exaulted Prince DLC
+1 willpower

Vestments of the Mystic - 7.21g
98 armor
2 runeslots
+2 willpower
20 mag/will requirements

Once you prebuff will power and equip said item, can then unequip them and be done with it?

yes. even though the higher requirement items are greyed out, they still work. the grey out effect only applies to the availability of the item to equip it. the prebuff must remain equipped only long enough to apply all the armor pieces desired.

Is there a reason you don't recommend putting any points in Willpower for Isabela and only 18 for Varric? Do you offset this with using all +stam gear?

the speed at which they gain stamina through attacks + a warriors rally is more than enough for 90% of encounters. Stamina Draught for the rest.

Isabela's points are so tied-up in weapon requirements and trap disarming to do anything other than raise con.

In build one for Anders, you have him taking Desiccate at lvl 14 and Petrify at 13 but you don't have Stonefist preceding it anywhere. Which also throws off the tactics for that build. With the second build, its in there.

I've been using your character builds as a guide for all of my companions - just FYI so you don't think I'm nit-picking your guide :)

I dont mind notifications on errors or questions concerning the reasoning behind builds. It improves understanding of the builds in the practical sense of how they actually work rather than the theorycraft of build making. Nitpicking helps, especially when builds go through several versions like that one has.

"Sundermount - conversation between Templars & Elves - diffuse situation or side w/ elves". Does siding with the Templars prevent you from purchasing Tome from Dalish Vendor or something? Doesn't this only trigger if you sent Feynriel to the Dalish?

With Aveline's tactics..."Ally: Mana or Stamina <25% | Rally", this presents a problem with Merrill or any BM in the party. I find that as soon as combat begins, Aveline fires off Rally due to Merrill's mana being sub 25% from sustainables. Leaving it on cooldown when I could actually use it.

Do you have any suggestion on how to still employ Rally via tactics or is this just something I'll have to micro-manage?

use a triggered condition youre working with like "enemy: paralyzed/STAGGERED/BRITTLE" or target a specific ally

Another quick question (feel free to delete if you want to keep this BM centric). I don't get why Sebastian's attack is so low compared to Varrics. He has 31 dex + 156 attack from gear + Valiant Aura (15%) at lvl 16 and I still can't get his attack to 100%. With all that, it's only 95%.

Varric on the other hand, only has 26 dex + 82 attack from gear + Valiant Aura (15%) + Bianca's Song (20%).

That added 20% from Bianca's Song doesn't seem to make up the difference from what Sebastian has over Varric (+5 Dex) (+74 attack) (Bigger boost from Valiant Aura due to higher base attack). Does Varric have a hidden passive boost to Attack?

attribute points scale less the higher you push them, so as Varric requires less the difference is skewed further

remember to check your percentages vs elites to judge how high your attack should be.
inspect the attack rating in your attribute screen.

I've been curious on how to do that. I read about it but am not sure. Do I just target an elite and then hit pause > character > attrributes?  The value will change depending on target?

no, in the attribute page, highlight the Attack data, inspect it
