The Arishok

In my mage playthrough, I just ran around and threw spells at him while my dog nipped at his heels.
Can't imagine how boring it's going to be when I go through it with my next class, rogue archer.
How did everyone feel about this whole Arishok vs Hawke experience? I understand they're going for a fairly epic fight with the Arishok being insanely tough but the only way to lose this battle is running out of potions and standing still instead of running.

My mage was better, cast the force mage snail spell, pew-pew with the stick and different hit spells (winter blast, stonefist).
Looking forward to my DW rogue relying on speed and precisions to dodge his attacks and have him chasing his tail while dishing out dps. The archer would probably try to keep a distance and fire debilitators/controller talents. Havent played a archer so is not familiar what talents there are or how they affect the Arishok.

*I'm not bragging. If I did let him hit me, even once, the force was always enough to stagger me, so I didn't have control of my character. Before I regained control, he'd hit me again. The cycle would continue until I died, not once being able to move.

It was the most unheroic battle of Hawke's life. Varric had a lot of glossing over to do. lol

Didn't really get the option of a duel, I just fought him and all the others.. Must've picked wrong somewhere.
He challenges you to a duel if you've earned his respect in your dealings with him throughout Acts I and II. If you have Fenris with you, Fenris will suggest a duel even if you haven't earned Arishok's respect.

I never needed potions, because I never let him hit me (seriously, not even once*). It was a pretty dumb fight, though. Fifteen minutes of kiting and scything wasn't my idea of heroic fun.
Sounds like a well suited strategy for an archer. I'll have to pull off the no hitter on my next playthrough.

Ha! It'd have been a lot easier as an archer! I'd at least have been able to use some talents besides Scythe! I was playing a warrior.

You must have gotten hit, since the "stab-lift" is un-dodgable.
I'm playing on hard and having SERIOUS difficulties with this boss, mainly because I don't have enough potions, and managed to overwrite my pre-qunari compound save...
Guess I'll have to do it full party then... *sigh*

Mind you, if he hit me once he could almost finish me, by the time I'd picked myself up I'd get sent flying again.

Warrior->Two-hand reaver. Very fast fight.
Mage-> Force mage with all cc and single target spell. Arishok is now a target dummy and my mage keeps drinking mana pots.
Rogue-> Duo-wield. Evade and backstab. Repeat.

So I think people in the audience were shifting around uncomfortably in their seats wondering how the two baddest dudes in Kirkwall could look like such losers when fighting.
I actually heard one guy in the crowd say "I haven't walked out of a movie since Crossroads!" Brutal. But I guess that's how it sometimes goes.
It's just a group game. The fight is wildly different depending on your spec. I wish I had a good idea on how to make a proper duel in Dragon Age. But I can't come up with one other than them scanning your spec and having that adjust what abilities the guy you're fighting has.

This is exactly what I did. The entire fight was just Hawke running away, turning around long enough to freeze him in place, cast spells, then run again.
Thank goodness the Qunari aren't much for talking about how much of a wussy the Champion was.

Two-handed warrior is not so bad, but you need more potions.
Archer is actually quite quick, aslong as you keep away from him.

I have yet to play through it as a rogue or mage, but from what I heard he is weak to frost...

Atleast agree with me on this; Bossfights should not take you 45 minutes of running circles around a pillar waiting for your cooldowns....

So I rejected the duel and did the massive group fight. That was a bit easier, but by the time all of the Arishok's buddies were dead, my entire party was dead save Merrill, so it ended up being a one-on-one anyway.
Luckily, Merrill is a lot stronger than my Hawke so she could take him on but it just seemed anticlimactic.
