My Hawke is pretty strong, I didnt die even once, but I did need to use petrify to be able to cast any spells... I basicly kited him around a pillar and did this rotation: Petrify -> Tempest -> Hemorrage -> Stone first -> Kite around in the tempest & wait for petrify. Obviously doing that takes ages and is very boring, hence my frustration, not because it was a challenge.

My fight went like this: dead. reload. Dead. Reload. I couldn't even kite, because the second I used a spell, he was already on me.
So I rejected the duel and did the massive group fight. That was a bit easier, but by the time all of the Arishok's buddies were dead, my entire party was dead save Merrill, so it ended up being a one-on-one anyway.
Luckily, Merrill is a lot stronger than my Hawke so she could take him on but it just seemed anticlimactic.
Now thats funny that Merrill is stronger than your Hawke. As for me playing as a Warior 2h with the 2h tree maxed out Reavor with devor and both upgrades.<regen don't seem to work with this here> Devor helped though while between potion cool downs. As well as Templar. Used Mighty blow, Smite and devour which helped quite a bit. And when I needed to I ran around the pillars or across the room. When he charged like he does I got out of the way and let him run into a wall or pillar.<G> Repeat process as needed. Within 10 minutes he was done and I had won the fight. All this was done on the Hard.
