As others have said, the low-level Mage DLC armor is good. The high-level Mage DLC armor is reasonably good, but yeah, Champion's is where to go if exclusively for looking good.

I'm personally a fan of Robes of Unblemished Cleanliness (BE DLC), mostly because it is the best robes in the game, hands down, and there are few things as hipster-ironic as siding with the Mages and killing Templars in a set of Chantry robes (wear the Apostate's Mask for additional chilling effect).

well I wish there were more pant wearing outfits and some light armor options for mages.

Seconding what RobRam said: the low-level DLC mage robes are really very nice, and suitable for the apostate mage who's trying to keep a low profile. The high-level robes aren't as attractive (at least not on a FemHawke), but by that point you're close to getting the Champion armor anyway.

Speaking of, my gripe regarding the mage armors is that the Overseer robes are offered wayyyyy too late in the game. It's like--okay, you can head to Sundermount to complete the Overseer set, OR you can go kill the High Dragon to get the Champion armor which is better in every way. If you make the rational choice there, you never have a chance to wear the Overseer robes. Useless.

Yup, you hit the nail on the head.  The robes/armor in the game for mages is pretty bad.  They need more variety and they need to be able to be unlocked sooner.

The only thing with the mage robes and well they end up giving you this big neon Vegas sign that says you are a mage. I would have loved them to look like Anders or even something akin to Merrills. The DLC robes look cool though.

With the pants & shirt style robes there is the Heavy Velvet Robes available from the tranquil vendor (next to the Formari Herbalist) in the Gallows in act 2. They boost armour & defense, I can't remember what they do for your magic but they are purple so do as you will boys.
The first set of robes in the DLC item pack are pretty good and look very cool too, the second one just looks like a dressing gown.

I do wish there were more DLC-esque 'armored' robes in the game, it'd definitely save me the trouble of succumbing to my vanity and simply model-swapping everything I think is ugly. Overall, though, the armors in this game, as a whole, are a HUGE step-up from Origins.

I'd kill someone (read: mr afk) for some sexy purple robes, or just better robe models in general, almost all of the basic ones are so goddamn UGLY.

The DLC item pack was a step in the right direction, hopefully future content will follow this trend, or else, I'll be spending even more intimate time with pyGFF.

:(

and I'd almost consider taking it for the team - but won't as I no longer face all these problems which afflict you lesser mortals. My rogue armour looks amazing! hahaha :P

But I agree, the robes in the game look terrible. Not sure what they were thinking when they designed it .. it's like a weird mixture of old people's clothing with inch-think padding. eurgh.
I had hopes when I saw the mage champion armour in the trailer... why couldn't all the mage armour actually be armour?!

Also: After a quick google-image I think I came across their inspiration for the design

            http://www.tineye.co...7ee7901dbbc0773

It has that horrible 'padded bust' look anyway.

That is absolutely revolting! Yet I'd still take it over the old versions of Anders' bitter, tortured soul coat from Origins.

And my dear mirandaavatar, you're going to need more than purple gear to lure me to the PC si-

I'm not a big fan of the mage robes in this game, the fugitive's mantle does look good except for the giant kneepads they slapped on and that weird bird perch on your shoulder.

I was insanely fond of the 'Robes' of the Pirate. Used them from early Act 2 until I dropped the High Dragon (and could equip it, was 5WP short at the time :P ). Still remember the fist time I put them on, I was "Oh yes! That's what I'm talkin' 'bout!". I do have to agree though, for an apostate mage, Hawke isn't given many clothing options that don't scream 'Mage Here!'. And then I casually walk into, the out of, the Gallows. After talking to several Templars. *headdesk*

They're the Heavy Velvet Robes. You can buy them legitimately in game even if you are slumming it on console Posted Image

tbh, those remind me of an apron or something.
and somehow i don't see myself running around in an apron...but I also don't seem to share your fascination with purple so I shall bow out of this conversation now. :)

This is probably the best looking chestpiece for mages in the game:

dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Battlemage_Armaments

The Champion armor and the Chantry style (unblemished, overseer) are the only others that I actually like.

I kinda wish I could mod my game (PS3) to give this style to the other major armor sets that I use.

Hey, that's the same model as the Flint Company Cuirass!! That was my favourite armour during my allure's crook rogue-playthrough (where I used it in preference to better armours).

I never really liked that chantry style robe though.. the seeker's armour looks waaay better. Actually, pretty much any armour is better than robes to me. The only mage clothing I liked was the champions armour and the robe of the notorious pirate (i.e. the non-robe mage attire) haha.

If you're as vain as Arelex I think you can model swap. :P
I'm not sure whether it's possible for ps3 but if it can be done for 360 I would think you could.

True, but I think there is a lot of irony to wearing Chantry robes and siding with the Mages.  Or hunting Templars with a Chantry robe on.  If you wear Apostateface (I think it's called the Apostate's Mask, but I think Apostateface is a much better name) then it just becomes downright ironic (faceless "Chantry person" hunting the Chantry enforcers).  But it's only if you really enjoy irony, ha.

haha I enjoy irony but not at the price of looking like a fop. But yeah, Apostface is scary. It would give me nightmares if I was a templar seeing a vengeful Apostface suddenly swooping down. So glad they allowed the helmets not to be shown. If I had to see it equipped...I'd probably just miss out on that extra 10% damage haha.

Btw, what's really ironic is giving the allure's crook to fenris/sebastian and hearing them rant on about how evil mages are etc while zapping people with a staff hahaha.

(somehow I read Apostateface as Apost-face and it seems to fit even better. I wonder how shortened it's going to be by the end of this haha)

It is true that you look dumb with the Chantry robe on.  Whether or not you wear it probably depends on how hipster-ironic you want to be.  There is tons of ripe irony possible in DA2, which I think is a massive bonus: I don't recall being able to be terribly ironic in DA:O.

By the end, Apostateface will probably end up as Apu or something.  Apo?  Ap?  A? Or maybe it'll just be           .

Overall yeah, I wish there were better mage robes especially for dudes.  The Velvet ones only look good on female Hawke...

I had the same problem with creating a mage. The entire class was very enjoyable to play as but it lacks any cool weapons and armor sets. The Champion armor is only average and none of the staffs look cool. That's why I missed the Arcane Warrior.I was able to use the coolest sets and weapons.

All the blade staffs were pretty cool, but they were way to few and far in between, and the Staff of Violation looks cool. Other than those it was kind of slim pickings. The generics especially were eyesores IMO.

Thought the champion armor was really cool though, but the damaged arm thing was king of getting on my nerves. Now i liked the exposed arm look, just rather the sleeve looked cleaner instead of that damaged look.

I didn't like the robes in DA2 to me they lacked style. I hope when they make DA3 they bring so of the old robe styles of DA:O.

I also think that they should armor customization to DA3 so you can have you own armor or robe.

The exposed arm is what I hated about the champioin look for male Hawke.  It's like he suddenly develops this amazing He-Man arm.  I mean, WTF?  It irritates me every time.

I'm actually playing a mage male Hawke and I upped his dexterity so he could wear rogue armor.  That's how much I freaking hate mage robes in DA2.

I don't mind the Champ robes, the other ones are horrid. I use the start champ mod, so I don't get the transition form not so muscular to he- man build.
