I can't decide what class I want my main character to play. I've pretty much narrowed it down to rogue or warrior. However, the starting armor really looks goofy and turns me off of rogue. As I have not seen other rogue gear I can only assume they all look somewhat like the starting armor (goofy shoulderpads, skirt, no pants). A stupid looking character is a HUGE turnoff in single player games for me. If someone can confirm that most armor is not stupid looking and it's just a level 1 thing, I'd love you unconditionally for all time.

I am also having a hard time seeing a rogue as a leader-type. Why people would willingly follow a thief is kind of confusing to me, but maybe there's a reason in-game that they havn't mentioned. Also, I'm playing a human noble, and they don't seem like the rogue type. This is really a minor issue, but an issue nonetheless

Now, I do really like the rogues because of the charisma, and the specializations are neat (Mostly duelist and assassin. Maybe bard).

So now we get to warrior. Melee type, again. Gets some decent looking armor. Makes sense story-wise for a noble. Seems like a leader-type. However, warriors always seemed like the auto-attack, not many actions kind of class. Essentially playing a passive game when it comes to combat. I also really want my first playthrough to have a silver-tongued character, but am not sure if I can do that without severly gimping the character's fighting style.

I've remade this character at least once per day and it's really getting annoying!

Anyone have any advice? Either from experience, videos, or whatever? Much appreciated!:D

I choose my class based on which other characters I would want in my party. I wanted both Alistair and Dog, so Warrior was out. Also wanted Morrigan, so the Rogue I became.

Might be something to consider.

If you're like me, you tend to give your own character the better gear than that of your NPC companions. As a consequence of that your char normally winds up being the one with the most HP and highest survivability, making them an ideal tank. Much as I love rogues for their subtlety and style, being able to hack and slash your way through your first playthrough if things get hectic would likely be wise. Second time through, once you know the game world a bit, might then be worth going through on a rogue and trying to change things up a bit. ^_^

Two things;

1. Never base opinions on the starter gear in RPG's. Never. Seriously, it generally never matters in roleplaying games and will almost in any case look ugly.

2. A Rogue is not necessarily a thief, it depends on how you make him to be. And a thief could very well be a leader depending on his followers. Who do you think would lead a group of thieves? Correct, another thief. The ringleader if you will. Ever played Oblivion? Thieves Guild? Just an example.

Beyond that, look at this page: http://dragonage.wik...m/wiki/Assassin and read up on the little story there. Assassins are in a way respected by some. There is no reason they could not lead a group.

Beyond that I can't really help you. Warriors and Rogues are very different in many ways, and mostly have very different personalities. A knight for example is mostly very courageous and charismatic. While an assassin could be very calculating and selfish.

There are many, many options.

I personally go for a Mage, because I like the more intelligent heroes that think long before they act and like to research into the mystical magic and all it's power.

------

Now if you want to look it from a gameplay perspective;

Do you prefer to be head-on, or take the side-walk?
A warrior generally goes in first, and either deals a lot of damage, or makes sure his party members do not receive any. A rogue in turn strikes from a distance, or walks around his enemies to stab them in the back.

I usually play the same classes in all my RPGs (the warrior or paladin-type, then sometimes a second time as a rogue. I don't care much for magical classes). I could see myself trying everything this time around, since I want to at least play through every origin story at least once.

Thats what i tend to do, and as someone already mentioned my character turns into an ideal tank, althoug my first playthrouge of NWN2 left me being useless and Kelhgar being the kickass tank, although we did level out near the end.

Hey Silabus, I was thinking some of the same stuff about the rogue and warrior, here's what I've learned about some of your questions.

As far as armor/character appearance goes, the armors I've seem for the rogue are not all the shoulder pads/skirt thing you described.  If you're looking for a character who is going to look really imposing in some enormous plate mail, I doubt you'll get that with the rogue.  Light/medium armors tend to look a little more close fitting in the screen shots/ videos I've seen, but at least many of them have pants :)  If you want links I can post them later, but some of them might have spoilers.

If you've played bioware games in the past, you know that they usually give you a pretty compelling/immersive reason why your companions want to follow you.  As this game is based largely on the different origin stories, I'm sure there are compelling reasons why your character is a good leader regardless of origin/class/etc.  As someone else said, not all rogues are thieves, I think class is more of a gameplay/combat style thing.   If you like being quick at the expense of damage resistance, you probably want a rogue.  If you want to play a character who can go toe-to-toe with most enemies, you probably want a soldier.

I believe the coercion skill (which determines the speech options for your character) is based on the cunning attribute, but I think you only need something like 16 cunning in order to achieve all 4 levels of coercion.  This information is in the unofficial Dragon Age wiki, if you want to know more (note: unofficial.  I can't personally verify any of this).  16 cunning should be easily achievable regardless of class. From what I've heard, coercion opens up persuade and intimidate options (much like Mass Effect).  Your success on intimidate options will depend on strength, while persuade will depend on cunning.  So, if you wanted to be more of a persuasive talker than a blunt intimidator, you might need to gimp your standard warrior attributes a bit in order to boost up cunning.  I don't know though, it depends on how high the cunning/strength requirements are.

As far as warriors being brainless "auto-attackers", I don't think that's the case with dragon age.  Warriors have access to some pretty awesome talents through the 4 different weapon sets (two of which are, as far as I know, exclusive to warriors).  If you've looked at the specializations for warriors, I imagine those will open up all kinds of interesting talents as well.

I dont believe there is an "intelligence" stat and as a Noble Warrior/Rogue, you would be VERY well educated. Hardly a "dumb" fighter. Just thought I'd point it out since people mistake it in other games for your characters actual intelligence vs game mechanic.

A human Noble is quite easy to believe. After all they serve as scouts, diplomats etc. Its quite believable your older brother (I assume hes older in the game) ould be expected to lead and fight so your character being a diplomat (bard) or Scout (Ranger) is easy to see. Assassin could be argued to be a result of what happened during your origins story, in the style of say "The Count of Monte Cristo" i.e. Assassin/Duelist mix. Hell, a Noble Duelist is fairly easy to comprehend.

Remember, a noble has to be savvy and charismatic as well. People are following you because your a Greywarden as well!

personally i'd go for rogue for versatility since you get the most skills as a rogue you can branch off into more skills other than coercion and can get lockpicking.

for first playthrough always chose war couse its the most straightforward gameplay and be a tank becouse that is the most important role in grp so you want to do that atleast until you know the game...aldo i chose war couse i like honor and melle fight..to be a leader..proud and strong:)

At first I was thinking Rogue for my first play-through.... for me, the ability to talk my way out of things and talk my way into extra rewards is important, so Rogue with max Cunning seems like the way to go. But I understand the OP... it would be irritating to get halfway through and realize you don't like the class you're playing.

My first choice would be warrior of cource, but then i fisrt tryed the Mage with AW spec it blew up my mind! This allow your MAGE to wear the most amazing armors in game just as warrior for the cost of MAGIC instead of strenght, you'll look aewsome and probably the best tank if you know which spells to choose. --> I suggest you start building a Warrior to learn the basics, mage and rogue are bit more complicated but it's your choice. Good luck with your character(s)!

Oh, if u dunno what AW is >> Arcane Warrior Specialization

One more advice (if you intend to start one) about the AW, it works well with BM(Blood Mage), invest your attribute points into Magic (some into CON), your little mana pool will be used to mantain sustained spells (like Rock Armor, Arcane Shield, Fire/Ice Weapons, etc..) and using your health to cast spells with the BM talents. I didn't try it with SH (spirit healer) nor SS (shapeshifter)

but im sure it'll do a great combo if using the correct spells.

I think it's really gonna depend on what your play style is like. I mean if you like tanking and in-your-face fighting then definitely go warrior, but for more a silent killer with a little extra finesse fighting skills go rogue, after all rogues can do the best dps more so than warriors with added poisons combined with backstab.

I personally always play rogues in rpg's because there's usually more options to that class than just run up to face of enemy and just swing away.

I wouldn't worry about the armor looking goofy for a rogue it does get better and there are actually some nice skins to some of the later lighter armors in the game (no shoulder pads and such). As for being leader it really doesn't matter in game who is the leader cause you can always control another character when exploring around, but either way you are a grey warden which ever you choose.

And you have to figure how you want your party balanced, meaning that if you play a rogue you really don't need to have another in your party as you take care of all the stealth, traps and persuasion abilities.

Dont' worry about the armor when starting a new game, u'll get cool gears and stuff from mobs or quests, just make your way to it, and yes it depends on your play style. I said go with warrior because i did of course ;) and learnt what i should to start building my next characters.
