or is it just me?
Soloing the game just involves lots of kiting and running: does anyone else NOT find that fun?

It's not for me.
That said, if I did do something like this I'd definitely feel good about it... really feel like I mastered the game. So I wont pretend I don't see the appeal.

That's how I defeated the Arishok in the duel with Mage!Hawke.
It took 15 minutes to kill him but I thought it was hilarious!
But doing that for the entire game, not sure if I'd find that fun.

Not fun if it goes on for too long. Arishok was plenty of kiting.

Some people just enjoy the extra challenge which extends their enjoyment of the game.

So... don't solo it? It's a little odd to complain about how not-fun it is to play in a way hebdevs never intended you to play.

Games like this, where companions are pre-built for me, I don't like to bring companions whom I don't enjoy having around. Doesn't have anything to do with how overpowered/underpowered something is.
That usually leads me to playing on difficulties lower than Nightmare or whatever is the hardest difficulty, because of suboptimal party configurations.
I did play this game through on Hard though.
Kiting is a possibility for a lot of encounters, or simply 'exploiting the terrain' as it's called (mommy spider in Deep Roads and the staircase comes to mind). I don't find these things enjoyable as is, but due to the how the game was made, they are necessary means to victory. Arishok duel as Mage being a prime example.
I wish they would do away from the DnD party setup finally and made boss fights which are not just tank-n-spank fights, or kite/terrain exploit fests.
Give me a boss whom I have to beat by playing chess against him or whatever other puzzle even, instead of this pointless running around we have done in so many games already.

Heck yes! Great idea! Let's go Seventh Seal in Thedas.

If people find that entertaining, more power to 'em. Personally I'd rather remove my eyes with a pencil eraser.

Yea, this tactic is not really using your abilties. Its beating the game using mechanics. Every boss fight can pretty much be beaten by kiting and a ranged party.
I find it extremely boring.

Nope, you're not alone. I like a challenge, but that's just tedium.

Errr... Guys, last time I checked, no one at Bioware was forcing you to solo DA2. Maybe I missed a recent post from Chris Priestly?

There are kiting classes in Diablo 3 and Majicka is all kiting.

Same here... I kited waited for abilities to cooldown and waited for him to charge so I could move out of the path and cast things/staff attack while he was recovering.
I actually enjoy the story of the game, using the companions and seeing their inputs/conversations while we are questing. It is really pointless for me to play it solo. However, I can see the appeal of trying it to "see if you can" and flex your mentle muscles in character building and boss strategies. It's another viable aspect of play that I think needs to be included to appeal to the most amount of people. Just as there are 4 difficulty levels.

I wanted to try out the subterfuge and shadow trees and soloing seemed a good exscuse.
You have a problme with that?

Nobody is attacking the people who solo. He was making a simple statement that I'd be willing to bet MOST players (remember probably about 2% of the player base actually visits forums) agree with. To me, no, spending 10 minutes per every single random encounter kiting mobs around praying I don't get touched while I wait for a cooldown to come up so I can use it and resume running from it is not a fun playstyle. But some people like the challenge of it so that's their prerogative, don't attack the OP for an opinion though.

I finally saw a video of a two hander warrior fighting the Arishok and i was impressed he stood his ground and didn't kite and won, how many takes that was I don't know.
I assume a SnS warrior could solo without kiting except for a few fights. It is kinda funny, benny hill song plays in my head when i watch most solo vids.

I used to run around and kite. Then I downloaded the nexus mod that shortens the timer on potion use. All better now.

Blame the design. Bosses have so much HP, it's impossible to solo them without kiting and potions. Took me 15 minutes and about 20 potions to solo the last boss, for example. No chance of dying, but I almost fell asleep. Same goes for other "hard" encounters like High Dragon and Orsino. Running around waiting for potion/ability cooldown for 20+ minutes. zzzzz

If you could solo everything without kiting, it would mean that there would be no point to ever take companions gameplay-wise.
I'd say it's a *good* thing you can't solo the game without using cheap mechanics. At least there is a semblance of balance.

I never understood that. After "Diablo" came out, we've seen many so called "action RPGs" with a solo character. The forums were FULL with requests "give us a party!"
I don't mind, why and how someone else plays his / her game. But I don't like, when some of these solo-players come to the boards and call everyone a sissy, who prefers a party.
Soloing a party based RPG is nothing but exploiting the weaknesses of the engine, the so called AI and the leveldesign.
Worst of all: Someone complained even about mages, because they are too weak to solo this game.

So a gameplay design built around a party is "bad" just because it doesn't work too well (or has limitations) when you play it solo, isn't it? Makes a lot of sense...
But I know, devs should know someone would play solo and they should have balanced the gameplay for that. A shame that doing so would have broken the intentioned gameplay of a party, that is the PRIMARY aspect of the game.

I wouldn't do a solo run myself but pushing the boundaries of a game is always interesting, so I'm all for other people doing it.

I never solo. I love my party and adore party based games, and enjoy using the various strengths and talents to complete a goal. But the potion timer is too slow.
