I want Varric to use a longbow, but it says I need Archery to do it. However I don't see any spec tree for it. Am I missing something?

He can only use his crossbow. He differs from all other party members in that way.

It's not a disadvantage, in fact. Bianca auto-scales and is customizable, so it's naturally better than most bows, except some Act III options.

If you let Varric keep the shard, it's even better then the act 3 bows. It gets 3 more rune slots for a total of 4! Plus, since it's a companion thing that can't be taken off like their armor/clothes (whatever, lol) , it seems runes have much better stats on it then they would on any other weapon. Varric is amazing if let you keep the shard and fill them rune slots. For about three quests... then the game is over.. D'oh! lol

Not in the main game. If Varric goes crazy because of the shard, it wouldn't be until some dlc or something. For now, it's just a good bonus for his bow for 3 more rune slots or Sandal can turn it into a single special rune.

Well, no. Absolution and Jackal's will still outperform Bianca substantially, but that's a somewhat unfair comparison, since Bianca is restricted to Varric and he cannot use those bows.
A more precise assessment would be: Hawke with Jackal's or Absolution will outperform Varric with fully upgraded Bianca. Of course, it is still a very powerful ranged weapon, by any standards.
