After testing many combinations of drivers, DX version, graphics detail, texture resolution, and so on, reducing the default anti-aliasing from 4 to 2 stopped the crashes.  Framerate is 40+ in Kirkwall using DX11, high resolution textures, and very high detail with 11.4 preview drivers on a single HD 5850.  Seems too good to be true.

I haven't had any crashes, but I also found that reducing AA to 2 has a big effect on fps.

I'm using a 5830M card in my laptop at 1920x1080 resolution, also using hi res texture pack, DX11, very high settings.

After reviewing your settings list above, I suggest you can also increase AF to 16 and enable SSAO and high quality blur - this didn't reduce my frame rate very much but greatly improved the visuals. AA had a much bigger impact on frame rate for me.

Indeed, the only setting I deactivated for my HD5850 was diffusion depth of field. Wasn't that obvious on screen, so the extra frames per second were worth it.

On those cards, 4x AA vs. 2x AA can sometimes mean the world in other games, as well.

But so far I'm rather happy with the performance with 4x AA and 8x AF. I might be switching to 2x AA when I encounter areas that cause slowdowns, though.

PS: Also using 11.4 drivers, high-res textures and 1080p. VSync on, can't stand tearing.

you'll start crashing again any time now. wait for it..

GPU and CPU loads seem to have nothing to do with our 5850 stability issues.
