Whoa, batarians have some legitimate grievances against humanity. I don't agree with their support of slavery but I don't enjoy killing them.

Our hate for each other isn't going to just go away like that and if possible I'd like to take the first step to ending it.

Next time you see a blink, give him a hug, not a bullet.

What legitimate greivances?  That humanity colonized planets before they did?  That humanity was growing stronger and faster than their "civilzation" which relies on slavery?

Sorry, the batarians are no victims IMO.

Edit: I  do hope to meet additional batarians who are not slavers/terrorists though.  That can't be all they are.

They had been waiting to colonise the planets for centuries, perhaps even spending a lot of money in preparation for colonising when humans snatched the planets. Under normal circumstances humans would have been rebuked by the council, but because the council were anxious not to offend humanity (a race that the council didn't fully understand at the time) they turned a blind eye to it and this was completely unjust.

Also why do people seem to hate every Batarian because they have slavery in their culture? Culture can change, and I'm sure Batarians will eventually drop slavery like humans did.

Wow, just... wow. Ok, here we go:

1.  If they were looking at those worlds for colonization for centuries, they would have taken 'em centuries ago. But they didn't. The Batarians had no legitimate cliams to those worlds.  The Council didn't side with Humanity because they were scared of us, it was because they had no real legitimate claim.

It's like laying claim to a toy that you see in a store window, suddenly another kid buys the toy, you get mad, and go out and try to kill the boy for taking the toy. How does that make sense? You didn't buy it, you didn't put it in lay-away, it's not yours. It wasn't a matter of "justice", the Batarians are being brats who didn't get their way.

2. I love how you are saying that we hate Batarians because they're slavers. You've completely neglected the fact that the Batarians are raiding Human colonies and taking Human slaves! Slavery is reprehensible, but people wouldn't be up in arms ready to fight if the Batarians were doing it to their own people. Unfortunately, what they do in their borders is up to them. However, we've had Mindoir and the Skyllian Blitz! Two other acts of terrorism/assault on Alliance territory that you once again failed to bring up.

In short, the Batarians are no saints. The situation they are in is entirely their fault. So next time, be careful before you play the "victim" card for the Batarians. <_<

Wow I have a different opinion to you.

1. The reason they didn't take them was because they were preparing them for colonisation. They probably spent a lot on preparing for colonisation, on vessels and on analysis of these planets' climates. So it's more like a kid seeing a damaged toy in a shop window, spending years returning to the shop to repair it ever so slightly every time, and then another kid stealing it.

2. It was Batarian extremists funded by a totalitarian regime that were responsible for attacks on human colonies. So, because a totalitarian government is committing attrocities by organising terrorist attacks, does that mean we should hate all the people who are controlled by this government? Should we generalise the acts of a few batarians onto an entire race? Of course not! There are plenty of real world analogues that I could bring up, but I don't want this thread deteriorating into politics.

1. How do you know this? Where you getting your information? If what you say is true, than they were just stupid. They didn't place a colony down while "terraforiming for centuries"? Something doesn't add up.

2. You said we shouldn't hate Batarians because they have slavery in their culture. I said that we hate them because they force their culture onto us. I didn't say anthing about hating all Batarians.I stated why people hate the Batarians, because, again, their government is raiding our colonies and taking slaves and commiting terrorist acts. You were "defending" this, saying "well, Humanity shouldn't have taken their colonies in the first place". So, you are, to some degree, defending the Hegemony's side of the story.

1. http://masseffect.wi...arian_Codex.ogg - "...much to the dismay of the Batarians who had been developing the region for several decades."

2. Strawman agrument. Read my comment again. I said that humans shouldn't have taken the worlds they were preparing, and agreed that their grievances against humanity are legitimate, but I NEVER said that that justifies terrorist attacks and raids. Also in my book 'all Batarians' and 'the Batarians' is the same thing.

1. Actually, I just looked at the wiki. And when I clicked on the Skyllian verge, I found this:

"The Skyllian Verge[/b] is a largely undeveloped patch of space situated along the borders of Systems Alliance and batarian space. As such, there is intense competition between humans and batarians to colonize, develop and exploit the worlds."

Look at the bolded part.

So, they've been "developing the whole region for decades", eh? It says that the Batarians had been colonizing the region. They did not have claim over all of it, nor did they develop the entire Verge, just some of the worlds in it. The Humans started settling the Verge as well. They did not take Batarian worlds, the Alliance took worlds in the Verge that weren't settled.

So, there goes your argument.

2. (a)Look at the above comment. (b)You said why we should hate the Batarians for having slavery. We hate them because they are taking Human slaves. You talked about the institution of slavery, and why we should hate the Batrians for having it. The institution involves raiding Human colonies for slaves. So, there ya' go.

Plus the higher up Batarians have probably been indoctrinated, so they need to be put down anyway...

This is what I love about CDN. It shows realistic reactions from fictional events and people. It is quite interesting. It looks like the first couple updates foreshadow Arrival. Also i lold at how this turned into an argument about Batarians. :P

x2

I  have no sympathy for batarians.  Humanity shouldn't have to appologize for being stronger and expanding faster into colony worlds the batarians were too slow or unable to inhabit.

Gotta say, thanks Cynid for the post. I didn't realize you could access that many days worth of Cerberus Daily News in a row like that.

It does give me a good feeling on what may happen for the DLC.

Dang, score 1 for GreenDragon37. Yeah, unless you argue in the defense that not all batarians are evil, you're pretty much wasting time that wasn't well spent.

Cerberus Daily News rocks, that's for sure. There's something about those 'articles' that are just creepy. You can seriously tell that something huge is about to happen.

And that is my inner nerd talking...

For those of you ST: Deep Space 9 fans, it would seem that the Batarians will be similar to the Cardassians in the Dominion War. A once proud nation that has fallen onto bad times. They sell their "soul" to the enemy in order to regain their former prestige.

If this is so, Bioware could also taking another page from DS9's plot. The Batarians could turn on the Reapers in the last moments, and save the day.

Too much in my opinion.
It's like discovering that Pyramids were builded before egyptians. Most of people will say "Oh, they are even more ancient than I thought" and forget about it.
I would understand such panic if they discovered that Relays are product of merciless galactic harvesters.

It wouldn't matter to most people, because most of us don't worship the pyramid builders.  Things are rather different for the hanar.

As long as Shepard isn't suddenly thrown into visions where he is living in 1960's America and then absorbed by omniprescent "Prophets" I'd be semi-ok with that.

1. Key word is 'largely'. According to the in-game codex, the Batarians were indeed developing regions of the verge which were taken by humanity. So wherever that information you posted comes from it does not contradict the in-game codex entry. Listen to the codex file again and it confirms that my argument.

2. Who is it that keeps slaves in societies? It is the upper classes. In this case the upper castes and rulers of the Batarian hegemony keep the slave culture going and these are the ones who organise the raids on human colonies. The majority lower castes are simply ruled over, so you can hardly blame every one of them- they are oppressed people living under a government that promotes a slave culture.

Last time I checked this wasn't a bickering thread. It's about CDN Arrival news. If you want to sort your marriage problems go seek someone who specialises in help, stop bringing your *Zaeed voice* Goddamn Problems *end Zaeed voice* to this thread. Thanks. And stop with the giant 'Goddamn' quotes. You can snip them out.

I'm surprised that the CDN for the next few days has been found in those logs. You'd think that BioWare would do something to have the news released on a daily basis but... meh. All the more to get us excited xD
