I've tried using tactics

If target is short range, then switch to melee weapons
If target is medium-long range, then switch to ranged weapons

But most of the time this doesn't seem to do anything. Companions will still charge into battle if their swords are drawn, and generally continue to fire arrows if the enemy is right in front of them.

What gives?
