Hi all,  I dont normally post on the social website caus i dont normally get around to it. But I have quite alot to say on Dragon Age 2, as do almost everyone that as played it.

Im gonna start off buy saying that i LOVE Bioware, I have done ever since the Baldur's Gate games, it was that game that got me interested in RPGS, and from there on in I was swallowed up by them.

I own, Neverwinter nights 1 & 2, Baldurs Gate, Mass effect 1 & 2, Dragon Age: Orgins / Awakening and now Dragon Age 2. I paid £34.99 for this game for the PC, and here are my opnions on the game, I will break it down into PROS , and CONS, these are just my opinons. This isnt a review, but after just finishing the game, i Feel somewhat disasspointed. I agree with very one on here, about the "re-use" of caves / maps / mobs eg: spiders everywhere, the fact that mobs appear out of nowhere, and the long drawn out boss fights that seem to take forever on anything harder than Casual. Bio-Ware have built this massive reputation up for being the leading market in RPG's.

Given the Success of Mass effect 1 & 2, and Dragon Age: Orgins / Awakening. You could be forgiven for expecting the same if not better standard of game than these, but unfortunately, it wasnt to be. Posted Image

PROS

  • Hawke is an excellent addtion to the characters in the Dragon Age Universe
  • The Voice Acting is of the standard we expect from Bio-ware.
  • Improved combat system does make the game flow better, you feel in control of the battle rather than just pointing and clicking.
  • Streamlined Menus and Armour / Weapon System (simular to ME 2 imo)
  • Good Graphics (once you download the texture pack Pc)
  • Improved Speech / Chat System.
  • Good companion side quests.
CONS

  • Re-used maps / caves - recycled far to many times. Posted Image
  • Not enough areas to explore, mostly bland and un-interesting to look at.
  • The Deep Roads Event is WAY to short all that effort to get there and its over in less than an hour.
  • Poor leveling up system, takes to long and not enough points to improve your character.
  • Disjointed Quests - Hardly any make sense, and most of them you dont even know you are on, you do the quest (without noticing most of the time) only to hand in and get 50s and thanks.
  • The Illusion of choice, I felt on my playthrew that i didnt impact the game at all, I wont spoil how the game ends, but if you search on youtube, (did this after i completed it) it dosent make sense.
  • Cant Improve your companions gear or modify there roles (unlike the characters in DA:O and DA:A)
  • Impossible to keep all your companions happy, - they get (rivarly) even if you make them smile and do what they want (in some occasions)
  • Years pass in the game but nothing changes, all the places look the same, the characters and people around you even hawke dont age with these years going by, - Have they drunk youth potions or something? Posted Image
These are just some of the points from me about this game. I just bought the Prince DLC, so I hope on my next playthrew i experience more side quests, do more of the game. DA:O Kept me going for weeks, doing all the side quests etc / DLC etc.

Its not a terrible game, I did enjoy playing it, however given the cons of this game, i feel sorry for those that splashed out $60 or more for this game, IMO, it certinaly feels rushed and not completed. I honestly thought that i was only half way threw the game when the game ended.

I can only hope that Bio-ware take notice of there fans , loyal fans who buy all there games like me and proberly most of you guys on here, and make a patch or FREE DLC, that changes the layout of these caves / maps, adds more mobs to the game, and acutally makes the mobs come into the fight properly, rather than appear like someones just pressed start and joined the game. Posted Image

If DLC dosent save this game, then i will have to abandon DA 2, and just carry on playing DA:O / Awakening until Mass effect 3 comes out.

Anyway thats my pennies worth. Peace Posted Image

These types of threads continue to blow my mind for a number of reasons:

1.) The defenders that immediately chime in with "but the whole game takes place in a city, of course the environments repeat!" How they can not understand that critics are talking about the interiors/dungeons and not the city locations is mind-boggling - did you guys really go through the entire game not noticing that every single house, mansion, tunnel, and basement is the exact same map? Were you huffing glue while you were playing?

2.) The defenders that counter with "yeah, but x game reused maps too!" You understand that by using this argument, you're basically conceding the point, yes? And that it makes you look like you have some sort of buyer's remorse/denial issue? Did you not learn as a child that "yeah but he did it too" isn't a valid defense? Many games reuse assets, but if you think the kind of lazy design that permeates DAII is an industry standard, I don't think you play very many games.

3.) The defenders that claim trolling or elitism. All AAA games face a certain amount of backlash after release, something I'm sure Bioware knows well. However, it's been especially bad for DAII. If you'd take your fingers out of your ears and stop saying "LALALALALALALA" for a moment, you'd notice that an awful lot of people are talking about the same issues...almost as if the criticism is...gasp...valid! Even weirder are the folks that make claims that the detractors hate Bioware or are "trying to take them down" or ruin their reputation. You know, for the hell of it ("Yeah, I had a good time with Dragon Age...but Bioware's had it too good, we need to do something about this"). Did it not cross their minds that perhaps we just want more than a half-assed, lazy effort for $60? Especially from a developer we know is capable of better?

How any consumer can try and justify paying more for less, regardless of the reason, is beyond my realm of understanding. It's okay to admit to yourself that maybe, just maybe, the game is flawed and there is room for improvement. There's nothing wrong with criticism, so long as it's kept civil and constructive.

Agreed.

You feel sorry for people who paid normal price for an awesome Bioware title? You should feel sorry for people in Japan right now, not some RPGer enjoying an epic game in his free time.

I paid $49 for an awesome bioware title.. DA:O and another $49 for an awesome title ME2. I paid $60 for a sub-par bioware title.

And don't be a douchebag comparing games to the disaster in japan. Quite ignorant.

Perhaps, I'm the only one using the definition of awesome correctly comaired to them? If you notice the whiners are usually the same people. When Bioware banned a few, they kept coming back with new names, bunch of no lifers. Go to other sites and you'll see the average gamer loves DA2, its the trolls lowering the scores, writing false reviews, half them pirated it lol. old school fossils who want pen and paper on their screen whining about change, and children of Mass Effect who are crying. "I hope they don't mess up ME3. wah wah"

now, I'm seeing David G's responses all over the net saying how awful he represents Bioware for arguing with forums members.. don't like the game cry elsewhere.. Bioware isn't your family and this isn't the only forum on the net.

"but if I don't tell them how I feel a thousand times.. they wont fix these issues in the next game"

right? lol

games are like art.. the artist creates what he envisions and shares it with the world.. we either pay to enjoy their vision or not. Somewhere down the line the GAMER decided these artists work for them and feel developers need to please them like Kings. Just because you pay them for a service doesn't mean they work for you or they need to make you happy.

These games sell in the millions.. you whiners are but a small percentage which happen to be the loudest.

No one is forcing you to like EVERYTHING.. take it or leave it.. reminds me of the losers who get angry when George Lucas changes Star Wars or Novelists go a route they hate in a series. lol.

I don't think you're a troll since you seem to sincerely believe in what you're typing, but I do think that your appalling ignorance needs to be addressed.

First, valid criticism is never a bad thing. No developer, Bioware included, is in a position to ignore their audiences' opinion. While they do create "art" and share it with the world, your sense that they can simply say "Fine, don't like it, don't buy it" just goes to show you have no idea how economics  work, which is generally something taught in high school. No company, no entrepreneur, no sane person who wishes to provide a good or service can be that stupid  and still hope survive in the market, and we want  Bioware to continue making games.

Second, it also seems you don't know how statistics  work, which is also something that is probably taught in high school, if not middle school. If 9 out of 10 people agree, even if to some extent, that Bioware has made a lazy effort resulting in a poorer game, then that is a very reliable estimate on the percentage of the "millions" who also bought this game. Forums are not limited to criticism; there's a ton of threads praising the game, and there's a ton more criticizing it. But you know what all those have in common? Those people care about Bioware and the games they make.

I'm just saying , I DID enjoy playing the game, despite this issue. However.
WITH THAT SAID! I felt like I bought 20$ of game to be honest. the ONLY freaking difference in most of these maps is that areas are blocked off, THEY DIDN'T EVEN REMOVE THE SECTIONS OF THE MAP YOU COULDN'T GO TO. I am VERY upset with this, and I feel like I paid far over market price for this game. If they don't do better with the squeal/expansion, I will be very, VERY pissed

What has my opinon of DA 2 got to do with the horror that those poor people are going threw in japan right now?? -
This is why i dont bother to talk in forums.

What is happening over there is horrible and i wouldnt wish that on anyone, anywhere.

Funny i thought i was commenting on a sensible forum open for healthy disscussion and debate, and considering i agree with what everyone has said about the game lead me to write my own pennies worth, - trust me when i say this, i dont think i will be commenting on anything on these forums again.

It all comes back to their insane time schedule. EA made Bioware churn out a sequel in 1,5 years, even though Bioware is known for taking their time to make the game they want. We're talking about pure greed and the desire to ride the wave of the success from DA: O as soon as possible. It is quite sickening. I thought that EA had changed, but they obviously haven't. This reminds me so much of when Obsidian made Kotor 2. They too had a ridiculous time schedule and the end product suffered as well.

Bioware made the best game they could in the time they had. And lets not be silly here, the game is still very good, but it is definitely flawed. It is not what we've come to expect from a Bioware game and I just hope that this trend of churning out a sequel does not repeat itself. That would truly be a shame.

I agree with pretty much everything you said. I do think it is a very good game, but they should have spent another year developing it.

It's not a new problem though is it? Oblivion and Fallout were full of recycled caves, buildings, train tunnels etc.

The defense is covered in the OP, but at least Oblivion and Fallout took common pieces and assembled them into new shapes.  So every time you enter a cave, it may look the same, but the layout is different and you don't know what's around the corner or which way you have to go.

New and different shapes? Not really. Bethesda, going all the way back to Daggerfall, has a history of reusing dungeons and caves, all of which look alike, and the layout for the majority of them is the same. If you've been in 3 caves in Oblivion you've been in them all, and don't even get me started on the voice recycling Bethesda does.

Generally with the recycled maps, it never mattered to me, because the scenery mattered less than WHY I was there, which was always fresh unlike in Oblivion where you went into the keep/dungeon/cave to kill things maybe find something, but it never felt like it had any impact once you were done except to grind skills.
