Why is cheating (at the game) so popular?

Possibly, but a good troll deserves a little troll chow.

Because I like to have my cake, and eat it too. Also, because I like to use my favorite guns, not just whichever gun currently has ammo.

And I like to choose the dialogue responses that I want to, not just a strictly paragon/renegade path that leaves disadvantage from certain storypoints.

And because I like for biotics to be useful on higher difficulties.

And because I like make certain armor pieces more useful so I actually bother with them.

And more color patterns.

And stuff.

I do it once I've done my achievement runs and just want to have a good time without having to grind through all the boring stuff I went through in the very first playthrough I did back when the game first came out.

Do note that I wasn't trying to convince anyone of anything.  I asked a question, got very simple answers (what did I expect?), and got flamed, not necessarily in that order.  If I was a troll, I would be trying (ineffectually) to argue that cheating is wrong and you are a horrible person to do so.

But whatever, think what you will.  No skin off my nose (that sounds painful) It makes no difference to me if you believe me.  It's cool.  :wizard:

My first playthrough is always on Veteran. Its when I start learning the game, seeing the new things and getting a feel for the classes, trying to figure out every little thing about the game and everything I can do in it.

2nd playthrough is always on Hardcore, raising the difficulty, trying out new tactics and abilities, finding things I may have missed before.

And then my 3rd is always on Insanity, giving myself a fun challenge and winning by using everything I learned in the first 2 playthroughs.

After all that, I don't really care, and I don't want to do every little thing over again. I don't want to go around in the mako exploring all the same barren planets I have seen many times before to find some Matriarchs writings or some Turian insignias, I don't want to hack every darn console or crate I come to in game, I don't want to hop planet to planet and scan for resources or scrounge up money once again just so I can finally have all upgrades by the last mission, never getting to use them before that.

After those first 3 playthroughs its all about story and characters and I don't have any issues modding or cheating then to get things setup the way I want them to be so I can play out the story I want and not have to worry anything else.

If a mechanic is annoying or tedious I will try everything in my power to bypass it. Which is why I max out credits, paragon/renegade, and resources out at the beginning of the game.

I won't ever mod just because I'm scared it would corrupt my saves or get me banned from xbox live or something. I just wish in ME3 they would add more clothing/hair/makeup options and give me my purple eyes back so I'm not as jealous seeing pics of everyone else's modded characters ;)

The only way you'll get banned from Xbox Live is if you mod online multiplayer games and get reported for it by other users.

I wish I could "cheat" to get certain squadmates earlier and experience different dialogue options and also to do it without having to worry about *certain things happening to my crew near the end of the game.*

Other than that, I don't really want to "cheat."

Because after mining for 3 playthroughs I don't see why I should be put through that particular torture over and over again merely to satisfy the devs. Other than that I don't see a need to use anything else myself.

Something that has sparked my curiousity is how many people talk about how they modified their save game or tweaked the files or something like that to do something that is essentially cheating.  Things like giving themselves resources so they get instant gratification upon finding a research project, or giving themselves tons of Paragon or Renegade so they can pass all the difficult persuasion checks.  What's the appeal?  I mean, it essentially removes a layer of the challenge that the game offers.

I get that people may dislike a mechanic within the game (like the mining), but come on, are people that fussy that they'd rather modify the game files than actually do what the devs intended?  Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining or trying to call people out here.  This is a single player game and everyone plays it differently, but I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the readiness people have to go outside of the game to address their issues with the game.

Are these mechanics so bad that the game is just unplayable without mucking about in the game's code?  I for one like the challenge of these mechanics (even the boring or tedious ones) because I find the game is already too easy.  A common response to an earnest question of many posters here is simply "use gibbed" or "modify the save files," like this is a perfectly acceptable solution and should be the first thing done.  I for one feel that these things should come as a last resort, or to fix gamebreakers.  Maybe I'm being irrational or silly, or maybe I just have a higher tolerance for tedium in my games than others, either way I would like to know why this is so common.

TL,DR: Why is modding saves and such so popular, instead of in-game solutions?

I agree.

First off, I don't think "cheating" is possible in a single player game. You're not cheating anyone, and how can you cheat yourself if you mod the game so you can enjoy it more?

In fact, the biggest thing ME lacks is the ability to really mod the game extensively. I mod nearly all of the games I play, be they mods other people have done or mods I've made myself. On the PC modding has long been part of the gaming experience.

As for mods of convenience in ME2,  well I have added credits and resources. Because after several playthroughs planet scanning and opening this and that for credits gets really old. It's not about a "challenge" at all. How on Earth is planet scanning a challenge?

I always mod games so I can play them the way I want to. What does it matter what the devs intended? To me it doesn't matter. Playing within the bounds of what the devs intended limits my enjoyment of the game, so I exceed those bounds.

Not to mention it seems silly when you think about it.

Tim: "Shepard, the Reapers are attack-!"
Shepard: "Hold that thought, I need to finish strip mining this solar system to upgrade my rifle."

I feel the exact same as javierabegazo on Page 1. I have somewhere around 7 or so characters, after several playthroughs on all difficulties. Also having a nice different look that you have to mod to get is nice. Personally I already had all achievements and did everything possible b4 modding, I believe if you have to cheat just to play the game first time however, that is wrong, but whatever.
So it's nice having something like a vanguard with illusive man's eyes but red or purple, and have the soldier's ammo's, so I don't have to group with certian ally's to get them skills. It's nice to experiment, it brings out the game that much more. Also like the other's said, not having to stress about mining for 20 hours to get resources. Being able to start the game with all the weapons is good too. You get to play the beginning of the game with guns that normally you couldn't.
As I was younger, it was nice knowing, that just about ever game you play had built in codes with it, just beat the game or whatever to unlock it. I feel that even with achievements these days, you should be able to unlock "cheats" in the game after you, say, beat the game or, unlock other achievements or however the dev wants. But until they put these cheats in the game, and at least ALLOW you to EARN them..we are going to mod for fun. But the ones that do it to cheat their gamerscore or online should be banned in my opinion. So PLEEASE Bioware, allow us to earn cheats, I'm sick of modding, after unlocking everything in the game and gettin all achievements, let us just have fun after we earned it. Just like how it was when we were growing up =)

Actually didn't Microsoft not banning, but start blocking access to xbox live for modded xbox 360's? I remember reading something to that effect.

Over on the first page someone said: "I'm of the opinion that with games, like most things, you take the bad with the good."
That assumed that the way the devs implemented everything in the game is the only way it must be played. If you think like that; more power to you. But if I can find ways to remove elements I don't like from the game and thus get more enjoyment out of it; why wouldn't I?

Frankly cheating in singleplayer is the wrong term, as it immediatly forms a connection to cheating in multiplayer which noone but saddest individual can even attempt to defend.

I never cheated in games until ME2. But the ME2 gameplay is so ridiculous (and this is not only limited to the planet mining, but almost to every change from ME1), that I don't give a damn anymore.

I won't even touch ME3 until I read some modding guides.
