Wait, wait. Some have said that your companions are either straight or gay, depending on Hawke's gender. How can you know? I play as a male Hawke, and Ander's told me about how he and Karl had a tryst when they were in the Circle, after we went into the Chantry to try and rescue him.

If I play a female Hawke, Anders doesn't remark about this?

Apparently yes, at least others told so. Personally, didnt play female yet.

Well damn, that is even worse! The personalities and preferences of your party just change on a whim depending on what gender you are? So we don't even know who Anders, Merrill, Fenris, or Isabella (well, maybe her) really are then, do we?

Its clear that the Devs intended the Male Hawke to romance Isabela since she is in alot of the ads and she is pivotal to the main plot, Anders what clearly as important as a female LI. Anders indeed was shocking to see as a gay LI, didnt see that one comming, totally could see from Isabela since she had already established that in DA:O. They really screwed up Anders.

A character should be written as a character, not as a variable. With the exception of Isabela, who was obviously bisexual since before this game was started, this is an example of very poor writing.

Anders came off to me as a ladies man in Awakening. Seemed like massive character derailment when all of this vanished in DA2.

I won't dissagree that this is technically possible. But it is a seriously weak justifiction for "guess what!!! Anders is GAY!!! :D"

But seriously, just make characters with a set sexual orientation, its realistic. Just throw in a token gay guy and the community is happy.

Besides only women are about love interests in video games.

You don't switch and suddenly become one or the other. You're born with the attraction to the male or female sex. There's no choice in it. There's no sudden change.

I'm not gonna wake up one day and suddenly feel the hots for my buddy... I don'tknow what planet you're from, but things don't work here like that.

Speaking of which, romances are not necessary for a good game anyway...

I think those gays think that just because they become attracted by same sex everyone else does too. In my opinion they should have more open mind. Pun intended.

That depends, of course, whether you are attracted to boobs and p4ssies as opposed to dongs, or whether you are attracted to someone because of his / her personality.
If the first is true then you are right, it will likely not change (even though one hears from people who, after years of hetero marriage, find out they´d rather have the dongs - I guess sh!t happensB)).
If, however, you care more about the personality, then changes can happen.

That´s true. But if there ARE some, there should be gay ones too.
Besides, as relationships are important for a character, I think they belong into RPGs. The lack of romances was, imo, Awakenings´s biggest step back compared to Origins.

If Hawke is male then Karl is a former lover. If Hawke is female Karl was just an old friend.

That's some poorly writen scripting right there, but that scenario is actually VERY realistic.  Hell, I AM bisexual, and there are times when I have strong feelings for someone, but no sexual or romantic desire.  That happens in real life.  Sometimes a person feels more like a brother or sister or mother or father or son or daughter... not that they are... just that sometiomes relationships have olther dynamics than 'I like you, you like me, we are both atractive, OMG, I love you lets go sex now'.

You must lead a pretty shallow life if your choice of partner goes like:

Step1: Dong or no Dong?
if dong  ---> disgusting.
if no dong, go to step 2

Step 2: hot or ugly
if ugly ---> disgusting
if hot -----> ask question "wanna f*ck with me?"
