Not using Leliana means missing out on so many locked chests (and sometimes doors). Zevran's lockpicking skills are awful, so he's really not worth using in her place. Unless you're a rogue yourself I'd recommend always bringing Leliana along. She's an absolute asset.

Very true, but isn't this why all those wonderful modders made such nice things for us? *cheeky grin*

Lock bash
open lock spells
Character respecialisation

Have fun

I don't believe in using mods unless you've run through and completed the game at LEAST once. Even then I wouldn't recommend. I think it's something to maybe experiment with after completing the game with EVERY origin and class. Mods can break the mechanics of a game and ruin the experience. Only game I've ever modded was Morrowind, and that was after I'd completed it all at once and even then it was only graphical mods.

Also, mods can weigh down the game and cause performance issues. Plus, I'm running the game on OSX so I'm not even sure if mods would work.

So therefore I stand by my original comment. Leliana is a MUST for your party unless you're playing a rogue yourself. Those locked chests are too much to pass up. Here, I am mainly talking of the game. Mods not included as they alter the game and it's not fair to discuss them.

Leliana and Morrigan are the only characters i take nowadays; the others have long since worn out their welcome. more often than not, i'm a rogue myself, so - it's  two rogues and a mage.

Being a tank, I always take Leliana, Oghren, and Wynne. It works for me in Nightmare mode.

Oghren and Wynne (depending on the order in which you play the areas) are not available till much later in the game. So who do you use before then?

me (DW rogue or 2H-warrior), leliana (archer), morrigan or wynne (spirit healer) Shale (warrior). i switch in Oghren, Sten and Alistair/Loghain each time i start a new playthrough. So i guess i don't really care who's in my party as long as its not zevran, i found him useless, and i have 1-2 warrior(s) in my party.

My warden is a bad-A mage. So my favorite party is her, Alistair - done right (add Champion specialty) he's the best tank in the game for me :) , Shale, and Zev. Nothing fazes this group for me. Plus the comments crack me up.

I'm playing through again - this time as a human noble/rogue - and decided to try a different group.  I'm still using Alistair as my S&S tank but have Wynn (healing + offensive spells) and Sten (2-H) along.  (I just don't care for Morrigan's condescending attitude, lol)

I have found it to be much harder at the beginning! Sten was always getting hurt. But I guess I've gotten him strengthened so he's holding his own.  He's a very interesting, difficult, and deep character.

I <3 this game!!!!

I always switch my party around, but Wynne, Morrigan, and Leliana are always good to have around. Wynne keeps me alive, Morrigan kills things quickly, and Leliana disarms traps, picks pockets, and opens locked chests.

My first playthrough was a mess. I was a dual-wielding damager warrior, with Alistair the tank, Morrigan on offense, and Wynne for recovery. On my next and much easier playthrough, I was casting healing/AOE as a mage, Leiliana for archery, and Sten and Alistair/Dog doing the dirty work.

when first starting out, i try and get shale asap. don't get me wrong, alistair is a good tank, but i've found it requires a lot of gearing up to make it so. so, i shoot for shale to tank in the beginning, but move to alistair later. my other choices are usually morrigan (usually fill out her entropy tree and put her on controller) and wynne for healing, although sometimes i find myself having to take control of wynne myself because she just has numerous "senior moments" when it comes to healing.

I always bring Leliana as an archer/locks/traps, Morrigan for healing and control. The 4th slot is whoever I feel like at the time. Having your character as the tank gives you that luxury. Usually it's a dagger/cunning specced Zevran though.

I might try a full DPS type party if I decide to play again. Even on Nightmare I found the game too easy, of course I prepaired heavily and such but I was still expecting more of a challenge from the Archdemon which was the easiset boss just about, with my soldiers helping me.

I used Wynne for healing/support, Zev for DPS, Oghren as the off tank and crowd control, and my Warden was a 2-handed warrior as well that was slaughtering everything.

I might try a group like, PC being an Archer Duelist/Bard, Zevren DPS backstabber, Sten and Oghren as off tanks and crowd controlers + high damage output from skills like critical strike, sunder armor and etc.

But to answer your question my favorite party was probably Morrigan, Wynne, and Oghren or Zev. They had the most interesting dialog. I also like Sten too because I have an fascination with the Qun and the Qunari...

Alistair, Wynne and Leliana for me, they seem to have got me through everything. Leliana grew into quite a potent dual weapon fighter but having her in stealth mode to trigger enemy appearances or give unobserved line of sight for Wynne's offensive spells was really useful. Wynne's a great healer but suprisingly effective offensively too. The [--- Edit ---] (not sure if a spell combination is a spoiler) spell combination turned out to be really handy and Earthquake alongside Inferno or Blizzard was amazing. I'd sometimes use Leliana in stealth mode to give unobserved line of sight in rooms for Wynne to cast her mass effect spells from outside; quite a potent combination.

I didn't play any other combination was they'd assembled, unless forced to do so by the story line.

1. Me
2. Romanced companion
3. A mage (who can heal or at least make potions)
4. Any Warrior/Rogue depending on Romanced Companion's class (if warrior, then #4 is rogue, and so on)

no. i don't find that you need one. warriors in general seem to give off that "bicycle with a flat tire" kinda vibe. no fun and not that useful.

Alistar- Tank
Shale- Tank
Morrigan- Healer + some spells.
<- her- Shapeshifting mage, using this mod http://www.dragonage.../file.php?id=35

Morrigan has spirit healer, so he can group heal. I can shift into a pride daemon, or an orgre for extra tanking power.

Playing through for the second time on Nightmare and I'm using Wynne for Telekinetic weapons and three dual wielding DPS and we tear everything to shreds fast enough that tanking is irrelevant.

I decided to use different companions than normal and it's not as much fun without Alistair or Morrigan.

Ok so I don't so much miss Leliana's French accent all the time but the other companions seem a bit flat by comparison... except maybe Oghren but I only discovered how much fun he is by playing Awakenings.

Morrigan, Alistair, (Zevran, Shale, Sten, Oghren or Leliana)
When Morrigan is unavailable I use Wynne.
I rarely use Dog, I wish they could have made him like the Ranger's summoned creatures because I don't like having a party slot wasted by a animal who cannot speak but I want to use him because he is secretly the best Tank in the game.

Hm. I played with several different parties, and l'll admit that i adore certain combos purely for their banter.
Alistair and Morrigan goes without saying
Wynne and Zevran... 'can I rest my head on your bosom?' Can't get enough of that :P Just can't :P
Zevran and Shale are hillarious together
Sten and Shale bashing on humans (gets a bit old, but is funny non the less )
Some banters between Sten and Zevran reveal tidbits on Qunari culture, and just how perceptive Zev is. Also, Zevran and Morrigan, he calls her out on lying and having ulterior motive to follow the warden pretty early in game. I thought it was a nice touch, I missed it the first couple of run throughs.

That said, if you always have Sten in your party, there are some hidden dialog topics that can trigger that I found fascinating. They lead to discussions on philosophy and qunari culture in general, and if one of the last ones triggered after you complete Sten's quest and have him as friend there is a very, very touching bit of dialog that shows how highly Sten regards the warden.
