Merrill, Anders, Fenris: Great Party, or Greatest Party?

One of the improvements of DA2 over the original is giving us party members that openly despite one another.  Back in Origins, there was plenty of snarky banter between Morrigan and Alistair, or disapproving chides from Wynne to Oghren, but we never saw any actual hate.  DA2, on the other hand, really runs with the whole pro-mage/anti-mage conflict, giving us the distrusting Fenris, the militant Anders, and the obstinant Merrill.  Together, they're a recipe for greatness.

Fenris, of course, openly distrusts both Anders and Merrill, both for their attitudes about mages and their interactions with various fade entities.  Anders dislikes Fenris in return, while chastizing Merrill for her use of blood magic.  Merrill doesn't actively antagonize the other two, but she does fight back when either of them judge her own choices.  Put together, and you've got a perfect storm that encapsules the wider conflict of the game.

It's the first time I can recall being able to create such a perfect hate triangle in an RPG, resulting in the most entertaining banter since HK-47.  If they had TV in Thedas, these three would make for an excellent reality show.  I'd certainly watch The Real Apostates of the Free Marches.

They hate each other for boring, political reasons. Well, Merrill doesn't, but whatever. They need to take tips from Isabela and Aveline and just call each other ****s all the time. It might not be accurate, but it would be delightful.

Alright, actually got what I meant to post in there.

Varric is a fine character, but he's too smooth. He plays it cool with everyone, mages and critics alike. He's got great banter, and would be an solid choice for a 4th companion, but taking out any of those three reduces the constant air of hostility that is so much fun.

Not a new feature, having openly antagonistc relations within the party.

Have certain characters together in your party in BG1, and they will end up attacking and killing each other. Jaheira/Khalid vs. Xzar/Montaron, for example. I think Edwin and Minsc/Dynaheir end up attacking each other as well. The same thing continues in BG2, tho there some might leave your party instead of openly attacking, like I think Aerie will leave after Korgan antagonises her once too often.

Sure, there were RPGs before Origins with antagonistic party relationships. DA2 in no way pioneered that. I can't think of a game in which you could set it up a party in which everyone hates everyone else, however. I suppose BG is a special case, since you maxed out at six instead of four, and there might have been another hate triangle in there somewhere. But if so, that's still a good 11-14 years in between.

No Varric = failboat.

Also no Isabela is kinda weak too.

2 of them are whiny as all hell.

I'm not really a huge fan of listening to my characters actively hate on each other, but I understand that the world is a large and mysterious place filled with diversity. I like it when Anders is getting crazy at people who aren't especially antagonistic to him, though, especially in Act 3. That guy! What a card.

I don't like that triangle at all. I hate it when they hate each other. Can't we all just get along?

This. Especially after spending so many years adventuring together, you would expect them to at least be somewhat civil.

What happened to Anders is sad,and his character are **** in this game, first he have lost all of his humour and are portrayed like a possessed murderer filled with crap dialog, he is the only party member i can't stand.

You're missing out on the amusing banter between Avaline and Isabela.. and Anders and Isabela.. oh hell, everyone and Isabela.

Merrill is constantly blushing, Varric is constantly laughing, Avaline is constantly an inch from punching someone, Fenris is an inch from getting naked, Anders is an inch from being his old self, Sebastian is an inch from needing to wash out his brain, and Carver is an inch from humping her leg ;p

Isabela -- making party banter hysterical since March 8th ;p

That party lacks Varric. And Aveline. And Isabela.
I dare say it's actually the lowest party.

Isabela and Varric can make any other combination of characters work, but Isabela/Varric/Bethany parties are just full of "awwww!" and "I should really be mad at Isabela for corrupting my sister, but...ha!"

Admittedly, I do haul Merrill, Anders and Fenris around a lot in the end, because their discussions are unpleasant but fairly insightful.

"Mages suck."
"Do not."
"Hisssssss."
"Merrill sucks."
"Yeah."

Anders, Fenris, and Merrill have some of the cruelest (if not entirely unwarranted) interactions of the whole game during Merill's final quest.  I give the characters points for consistency, but, dang, that was cold:(

If you hate the characters and don't even want to pretend that they're nuanced individuals, then I guess it would come across that way.

I find that when they all hate each other it's a little tiring to listen to. Especially without an option for Hawke to interrupt and tell them to shut up already. I generally like to have Varric or Isabela around to keep things more cheerful between the arguments. I remember at one point Isabela even scolded Fenris a little for making a particularly cruel remark to Merrill during one of her personal quests.

I've been taking Sebastian and Fenris around lately and I keep waiting for Fenris to snarl at him, but he's oddly complacent about Sebastian offering him pointers on his life. I guess he respects him. It's nice.

Fenris + Varric + Carver offers some pretty hilarious banter.

I played through the game with Fenris, Merrill, and Anders except where required otherwise, and while there were plenty of snarky moments (including some good, very sharp dialog), there were funny points as well. Merrill teasing Fenris after he and Hawke have relations...that was great.

I thought at first that I wouldn't care for Merrill, but she grew on me. She's hilarious in a very accidental, understated way. It helps that the actress voices her beautifully and never comes across as cheesy or contrived.

Fenric and Isabela had the funniest dialogue ever - I have to go back and load that save and try to record it. I enjoy Aveline's exchanges with Isabela tremendously, though my party usually consists of Fenric, Varric and Anders, purely for strategical reasons. Those three don't have such a good vibe together, sadly.

I thought Varric, Fenris and Isabel were the most entertaining. They were all friends but really different personalities.

Sometimes they would joke and sometimes they would argue.

I would appreciate the hate triangle that you referred to between Fenris, Anders and Merrill if it wasn't for the fact that i often found it a bit tiresome and that Merrill was getting more or less bullied.

The mage vs templar conflict is just boring politics compared to grey wardens, flemeth and archdemons and listening to those three argue circles around each other just compounded it further.

Sebastian and Fenris acutally get along quite well - or at least they did in my game where Sebastian was plus 100 friend and Fenris was full friendship romance.  Sebastian even talks about seeing Fenris in church.  And Sebastian does really respect Fenris; and you can almost see Fenris responding to that.  Adding Anders with those two was bad; really bad.  I almost felt sorry for Anders.
