Not that I can blame her for it. The way I played it, Hawke always went for the option that would make everyone happy, keeping as neutral as possible. So it was a massive slap to the face when a certain mage decided to force a choice in the end.

I agree with a lot of people when they say that Elthina's mistake was her inaction. It was the same thing that led to Viscount Dumar's demise. I can respect wanting to make a compromise and wanting to satisfy both parties, but it came to the point where something HAD to be done - and she still insisted on waiting things out.

Yep, she should have been more active in her neutral campaign. What would have helped the most would have been her attempt trying to give mages more freedoms. You try to keep people down for too long, they will rebel in one way or another. Desperation leads to that. And yeah, certain mage did a mistake.

Elthina was a nice, fair-minded lady...who should have retired ten years ago for the good of Kirkwall. A firm, decisive person was needed to keep Meredith in check while still addressing the blood mage threat. Rather than acknowledging that she wasn't the right person for the job and stepping aside...she let the situation escalate for years. In the end, she helped destroy those she most wished to protect.
Or a firm and decisive person might easily have led to disaster earlier, and not required a crazy Anders turning up out of nowhere and blowing up the chantry and a sword which drives people mad to bring it about .

I think that the Grand Cleric is simply the most astute character in the entire game. She knows that there is no right or wrong and that she can have no impact either way and therefore accepts that all she can do is offer guidance when required.
I just wish Bioware realised that before they turned it into the main plot
Re Patrice, i think she maintains an innocent until proven guilty approach and once it was clear that Patrice was guilty, that justice would mean death so when it happened - it made no difference.

She knew that neither side was right or innocent. She literally couldn't win no matter which one she sided with. I don't believe that inaction was the best choice - but she's a religious figure, not a political one.
The greatest failure is the Viscount. He is the governmental head - he could look at both of them, realize that they're wrong, and lay the smackdown on both sides.
That being said - I bet Elthina wouldn't be angered by what happened. If she could be spoken too, I bet she would say: "The Maker is watching all that his children create upon this earth. The good and the bad." She might even pity Ander's and Meredith's weakness. I think she would feel compassion for the city.
Honestly - I believe that she, not Anders, will be called a martyr. I think she will be turned into a Saint for political means by the Chantry and the cry of "Remember Saint Elthina's sacrifice." will be cried across the entire Exalted March.
