I just found the whole situation funny i sort of get what the writers wanted to do with having your choices make an impact on your friends but it was just handled in a silly way.
So that whole choice near the end with Fenris

I get that Fenris doesn't like mages and all he spends the whole time going on about it but i played as a mage and got him to admit to me that i am not so bad so maybe not ALL mages are horrible so when it comes down to siding with the mages he turns on me to side with somebody up until a lil while ago he'd n ever met and only ever heard bad things about. Evidently the years of friendship mean nothing if you refuse to side with a stalin esque old lady in a shiny hat
heck even the stuck up and constantly critical of you Averline sticks with you.

It has to do with how high his friendship bar is, and to some extent doing all his sidequests/gifts. When I did my first playthrough he sided against me at first, but then when the confrontation moved to the gallows I called him out on his view of slavery. That made him get back on board with the mages.
I see your point, but Hawke being a good mage may not be enough motivation to stay with you when he just saw a prime example of why mages *can* be dangerous and harm innocent people and whatnot.

You just weren't a good enough friend. Or rival. I had him at full rivalry with all quests done, and he stayed with me. Only stupid Sebastian left. I'll kill him later, I hope.

Well it's a good thing you can change the companions' views, especially after having been with them for so many years.

Even if Fenris stays with you, you haven't changed his views on mages or anything -- he thinks Hawke is making a mistake, but he sticks by his friend/rival anyway. Gives a hot kiss goodbye too if in a romance.
But if he is indifferent towards you, you just haven't made a strong impression on him either way so he has no real reason to trust Hawke over his longtime beliefs.

The problem with Fenris is that it's quite easy to agree with him on some stuff and disagree with him on other, and thus end up in the middle.

Fenris never really changes his mind about mages in general, but if you put in the effort to get to know him and earn his loyalty, he places that above his dislike of mages.
He can be a little tricky to get to 100% of either rivalry or friendship if you're siding with the mages and oppose slavery, but both are possible if you're careful about it.

My first playthrough, I had him just shy of full rivalry and thus he ended up turning on me. Since then, I've usually gone after him as a friend. If you keep him away from the quests where you side with mages, he's ridiculously easy to max out. The problem with bringing him along on various quests is that he doles our friendship and rivalry points very oddly. My first time through, I kept expecting rivalry points at times and getting friendship, which prevented me from maxing him out one way or another.
The other thing I have to say about the rivalry system is that unless you're bringing companions on quests with you, it largely comes down to how nice you are to them. (Or, in Izzy's case, how humorous). I think that was my other problem with Fenris. I have a hard time picking the jerk-ass responses, even in a video game (I'm pathetic, I know), but these are the ones that lead to the most rivalry. Oh well. Now the only character I can rival without trouble is Merrill, as she doles out huge rivalry increases without having to be mean to her.

I think you only need like 50% rivalry or friendship and you need to at least have seen one of his questioning beliefs side quests. you can still lose him but if you pick certain dialouge options he'll stay. as other people have said though he will stay regardless if you move his meter enough in either direction

I wasn't really talking game mechanics in general i know full well he'll stay if i get his frendship bar up enough but it just felt funny to me when he turned "Screw 7 plus years of friendship i'm sticking with shiny hat lady!" "But Fenris aren't we friends?" "Hahaha silly Hawke my friendship bar is only at 20% we were never friends really even if i said nice things! die now!"
It kinda reminded me of Wynne in the mage tower if you agree with Morrigan that the Circle mages are practically slaves and you are all "Well i guess you have a point" and Wynne is like "How dare you have different views to me i shall murder you!"

well it's not really friendship unless you achieve respect. you can know someone for 7+ years and not respect them. the only way to measure that in game is with the meter

Evidently sticking by Fenris and helping him fight off his former master and his cronies and encouraging him to show mercy on his sister for setting him up is not enough to gain his respect. Fenris is sort of a ****** really i don't think i like him much lol
