I'd like to ask people about what in their experience is the best way to do heavy aoe dmg as a mage. Specced fire on anders and lightning on merrill on my first playthrough and firestorm seemed very effective, but the long duration on tempest was also very neat. Now i've started a mage main character tho, and i'd love to hear other peoples thoughts on this. What are the best single target dmg spells would also be interesting to hear. Gonna pour everything into the magic stat and use +dmg items to try to get the most impressive numbers ;)

This was my build and it worked very well. I got to level 25 and used 2 Books of Arcane Talents( The Spell point books). Definite Damage dealer and with the Champion's gear and Rock Armor I had a damage resistance comparible to a Warrior.

biowarefans.com/dragon-age-2-talent-builder/#mkamVSriuPhGfQw1awVQPhSr0zEtBCH1G

I also used Fenris a lot because he staggers quite often which causes and upgraded Fist of the Maker do 900% more damage, 180 total.

Oh, Spiders, Shades, Undead and Fade creatures seemed to take more damage from electricity than anything else. Actually the load hints suggested Spirit Damage was resisted less than anything yet I found electricity ate spirit for breakfast against everything.

Edit: Aside from the Champion's gear I was using a staff called "Eye of the Storm"

37 Electrical Damage (50 per second)
Rune of Devestation (+10% Damage)
+15% Electrical Damage
5% chance to stun.

Hmm, pull of the abyss would seem to work very well to get every enemy in the same place and then bombard them with firestorm, tempest and merrill's wrath of the elvhen, ensnare and so on. Interesting thought.

Hit them with a Gravitic Ring straight up and they go nowhere.

Yeah. Also seems good. I was considering going for Spirit Healer/Blood Magic as specializations, but i'm not clear yet on whether the health regeneration rate from vitality is shut down by the Blood Magic talent, though i suppose i could switch between healing aura and blood magic if needed. But i guess that i have to look into force magic as well now :)

Edited character info. That damage reduction of 49% is really misleading as my warrior companions at that level were Avaline 53%, Fenris and Carver(Templar) 44%.

Is the activity a little low on these boards or is it just my threads that doesn't interest people? :)

This is a badly disguised bump btw. ;)

Isn't the rule of Rune of Valiance only one per character?

Consider, you have 4 of them, so 4 * 7 = 28, and you have 22 cunning ...

I should point out that you only gain the benfit of one rune of valiance. Just take a look at all those +7 and look at your stats, they don't add up. It should say one per character not one per gear.

It does have some affect but they are diminishing returns. I think it halves the bonus for each extra item. I'll look tonight and work it out if you like.

The best single target dmg spells are Horror and Crushing Prison, in that order. Winter Grasp is also pretty powerful, with the added benefit of freezing, and never under estimate the usefulness of Spirit bolt. Its cheap, quick to cool, and packs a decent wallop.

I've, really come to love my Horror. At the end of act 2 on hard now and high dmg + stun in the same spell really helps. Tried out Gravitic Ring and imo it's the best debuff spell in the game, i was gonna go for dmg spells primarily, but Gravitic Ring is just too good to ignore.

Had some really nice experiences with Pull of the Abyss too. When Aveline manages to stagger six opponents with Shield Bash after they've all been pulled into the same place followed up by a Chain Lightning, i just laugh evilly to myself :D

Didn't really see the point of Unshakable when i played on normal, but now that i'm on hard it really helps. In short i guess that i've become a Force Mage convert.
