Merrill Rejection (Possible Spoilers)

(So without spoiling too much of what happens afterwards, can anyone give me some advice?)
I originally slept with Isabella (as every drunken sailor does), but I also tried to pursue a romance with her and talked about love and her dead ex-husband etc. Later, in an Aveline quest, she even mentioned the fact me and Isabella were a bit of an item.
During Merrill's personal quest though in Act 2, I flirted with her Once (godammit I couldn't help myself, it was a perfect line) and she ended up seeking me out at my house. So, my question is...
If I say no to her at the end of the conversation in my house, therefore rejecting a possible romance and her moving in with me, will I still be able to continue pursuing romance with Isabella or will this screw that up? Also, will rejecting Merrill have any bad effects on that relationship? As I like her too and can't decide whether to just go with her or not.
Has anyone tried the aftermath of rejecting her at the house and pursued Isabella?
Cheers for your input!

She did? I romanced Isabela and Aveline never said anything. What does she say?

Nothing much, just when speaking about Aveline's relationship to be with Donnic, she mentioned something about my character and Isabella being together and how would I feel if something happened to her.

If you want to be sure, just reject her at the first opportunity after she comes into the house. The part where you can tell her you're friends or something like that. WHY WOULD ANYONE DO THAT THOUGH?!!
I know she is ridiculously cute...I'm so torn between her and Isabella. The later events of Isabella's quest seem really interesting and I did start a romance with her first, feels like cheating
But I think I like Merrill more. She's more into you too you know?

No I understand that. That's why I've saved both options afterwards as I was keen to see both. But will rejecting her at the outset in the hall, before anything happens, have a negative influence on the remainder of the relationship with Merrill? Will she treat you differently, less favourably?
Nope. You'll just get normal friend/rival dialogue.

Cool, that's good to know, doesn't make the choice any easier! Did anyone else have trouble with the choice of partner?

But now that I've heard there's a glitch with the ending, in that if you choose to begin a relationship first with Isabella, then go onto another and properly solidify that relationship and love interest, the game still treats it as Isabella being your main love interest as she was who you were with first. So I feel a relationship with Merrill now, may not go on to be properly explored/explained as it should. For that reason my minds made up - finally - i'm going to stick with Isabella.

"I love you! .. I shouldn't have said that" ;>
Isabela loves merrill like a little sister, so once you've picked Merrill Isabela will tell you that if you hurt her, she'll kill you ;p
I have it saved a ways back, so I can do a "Isamance" in an alternate timeline XD

Merrill is an infinitely glitchy character anyway. Who's to say how your relationship with her in Act 3 will progress?

Yes, that bug is annoying. Then there is also her Act 3 bug where her cutscenes play out of order. Merrill romance is thoroughly busted. And yet I can't help my myself--I still choose MerrillWee Joe Green wrote...

A propos "feels like cheating": I got some banter after I fell for Merrill (having had an Insabela romance first) where Isabela asked something like "so.. you and Hawke, eh?" and Merrill blurts out that he is so strong nd clever and wonderful, and how could anyone not love him? To which Isabela responds "Yes... how could anyone not...". Merrill then asks, quite crestfallen, if she has said something wrong to which Isabela basically replies that it's all right and that she's happy for her, and that she (Merrill) has been alone long enough.
What got me there is that Isabela sounded genuinely regretful for not having really comitted.

That's because at that point you're not yet romancing her. When she comes into the house you can choose to commit to a romance with her (the heart option) or say something else. Merrill expresses how she feels about you and wonders how you feel about her. If you are kind to her without choosing the heart option, she'll understand that the feeling is not mutual and she won't hold it against you.fluorine7 wrote...
I had Mirrell visiting my house at night, and I'm romancing Fenris. So I rejected her by saying: you're like a sister to me. And it actually landed me +10 friendship...

Thanks for that, that's really helpful input and may have just made my mind up for good. I'm a sucker for a broken heart, there's o way I could leave her wanting
It was just hard to turn poor Merrill away when she was all flustered - I like the quirky types. Plus my fiendship is already maxed out with them so I can't tell when my decisions are gaining friendship points - which is annoying, they could have still given the indicator!
Cheers for input guys, I think I'll just have to toughen up and say no to her. ...Poor Merrill.

Merrill's romance is some sort of weird unstoppable juggernaut. If you sleep with Merrill, even if you don't pursue it afterwards, it still ends all other romances. I am not sure exactly what happens if you turn her away when she comes to find Hawke at the estate, but after hitting this issue (and subsequently having to use the console debug scripts to fix my game), I now avoid Merrill completely unless I plan on romancing her.
Oh and this is near treason. Merrill is awesome, how could you abandon the poor wee soul?

That's intended behavior. Sleeping with Merrill or Anders will cut off romances with Isabela or Fenris, even if you dump them afterward. Don't sleep with them if you want your romance with Isabela or Fenris to continue.

Thanks much for this clarification. Merrill and Anders, the relationship juggernauts, just smashing everything that gets in the way...

Interesting.
Then may I ask if there is a mechanical reason for the 'lie' icon in Anders' romance scene, where you can tell him the relationship with Fenris 'never happened'?
