So who is the MVP of your party, the party member you turn to when the going gets tough (excluding Hawke of course)

Personally for me its Isabela. She is the primary damage dealer of my party so when things get hairy I switch from Mage Hawke to Izzy and start clearing house with Backstab and Twin fangs. Because of the damage she deals she can quickly take threat away from the squishier characters. Definitely the MVP of my group, I try never to leave home without her

EDIT

Heres a poll for people to cast their votes on

Poll: When trouble hits,  do you take control of your MVP or stick with Hawke

Bianca. She's a sexy killer beast.
Her unique tree also packs the most damaging skills and the best sustained in the game.

I have to admit I just can't master Varric or Bianca. I never played as a Rogue Archer in DAO so maybe thats it, but anytime I seem to have Varric in my group he usually ends up dead. I must be doing something wrong because from reading these forums, he seems to be highly rated as a companion

Yep an unbelievable tank once she's fully set up.

Varric is the co-star of the game. He exists on a higher plane that the other companions. Even Merrill, with all her adorable-ness cannot compare to that loyal dwarf.

The default "ranged" setting in the AI does a decent job at kiting, but the interruptions from enemy archer can kill the flow and set him for a chain stun. You have to prioritize enemy ranged combatants when using a ranged character, to freely move around.

Nice one, thanks for that. I must admit Archers are the one type of fighter I know little to northing about, and I seldom if ever manually control the NPC archers as the AI tends to do better then I would Image IPB

The other character types though have never been a problem.

Give me a Dual Weapon Rogue however and I'll create havoc Image IPB

Maybe I'll just have to bite the bullet and chose an Archer type for my next playthrough, that way I'll be forced to learn

its either Avaline or Sebastian.
Avaline's Tanking skills are unreal especially when shes your rival. She can take damage all day, and once she gets cleave she puts out a lot of damage also.

Sebastian is good for clearing out anyone whose attacking you, his automatic critical chance from flanking does big damage against anyone.

I forget there's other party members half the time because Hawke is that awesome at getting the job done. As much as I really really hate his character I'd have to say Anders simply because there is no other alternative past Act 1 to get the creation line of spells.

Anders for sure.  Set on Panacea, he's kept the party alive through some serious unpleasantness. Also, various abilities he can use through the Elemental and Primal trees are very nice compliments to a two-handed warrior Hawke's brittle-smashing abiltites

Merrill is a beast. Built right, she can cast spells all day long and survive more hits than the other mages. Petrify problem enemies while you pick off the weak ones first... Chain Lightning staggered foes... it's a joy.

With a mage Hawke - Fenris has been awesome. A number of boss fights and my other two companions fall and he and I can still finish.

Aveline Is my star but this is the rest of my team,

Aveline for getting attention

Anders for a healer and some AOE attacks

Isabella to protect me and Anders

and my Hawke, rains down AOE spells everywhere (damager)

Honestly it goes to Merrill for my party, my Hawke is set up for primarily single target damage leaving a aoe hole in the party usually in which Merrill excels.

I'm going to exclude Aveline simply because her tanking role couldn't be filled by anybody else... as a mage, I found Fenris to be the MVP because of his ability to set up stagger combos for chain lightning and hemorrhage. Also, his attack and critical ratings were insanely high, and Rally allowed us to remain effective during prolonged battles. I would have ditched him for Carver (although both of them at once is an amazing combo), but since that's not an option for most of the game... Fenris gets my vote.

Varric. Isabela with upgraded All Hands on Deck was vital to my success, but Varric was the last man standing in many a situation.

Aveline as tank. It turns hard into normal.

Merrill is a great support/control character. Nice survivability, decent damage, and her spells turn most bosses to mush.

My MVP is Merill.

The Entropy tree is just waaay to good to pass up. I mean, sleep -> Group CC . Horror to pacify the elite rogue. IMP Petrify for Brittle to set up Warrior skills or the godlike Assassinate from rogue Hawke (IMP Hex of Torment + IMP Petrify/Brittle + IMP Mark of Death = at least 50k damage on Nightmare! Still alive? BAM! Twin Fang, son!). She also has IMP Chain Lightning to pick off the staggered enemies set up by Aveline.

Of course, Aveline is always in the party, but Merill is the one I turn to when the going gets tough.
