I thought the NPCs were pretty well balanced overall, so I liked most of them pretty much equally (from a combat point of view). Hard to justify taking Sebastian over Varric, Merrill I haven't learned to use right, and Fenris is IMO a bit subpar for what I would try to do with a 2h warrior - maybe he has other uses.

Personally, don't leave home without Varric, Isabela or Anders/Bethany, unless have to. :P

Bethany is my MVP. I only have her for 2 acts, but both times she's around thousands die in seconds :)

So who is the MVP of your party, the party member you turn to when the going gets tough (excluding Hawke of course) [quote]

Each of my party members serve a niche role.  So there is no MVP in my group.  Therefore, poll not applicable.

A bit of what MikeP999 said but Fenris is actually very impressive in both offense and defense. Not as armored as Aveline nor as dangerous as my rogue Hawke but his special talents make him very valuable.

For me, Carver was the strongest npc (well, barring Merril with a specific build but I find that rather uninteresting, it just doesn't feel right for the frail little elf mage to tank), he doesn't have his own spec tree but he doesn't need to, bering able to fully spec in two-handed and vanguard, with whatever points are left in key abilities from the other trees.
Since he's not available for a large part of the game (and not that powerful during the first act), Fenris is the next best thing.

Varric/Sebastian - seemed to find the game alot easier on nightmare when I add either of these in my group.

Merrill is unbelievably powerful in an all-out blood mage build. You can get her up to 6, 7 mana per HP and her specialty spells are party friendly. Unlike blood mage Hawke, she doesn't need any willpower and so I usually have her with more con than even pure tank builds.

For Rogue Hawke, it's Merrill because she provides the AOE mass destruction that best complements a Rogue, and will be Dessicating bosses for my Assassinates.

For Mage Hawke, it's Aveline/Fenris who will be tanking and providing STAGGERs for your Chain Lightnings.

For Warrior Hawke, it's Anders, because Warrior Hawke can't live without Healing/Haste/Heroic Aura. He can also Chain Lightning the enemies you just STAGGERed.

Overall, if I am only allowed to take one party member, I'm going to take Merrill as a Rogue. I disarm traps, assassinate the bosses and keep her safe, while she nukes the mobs.

Dog is pretty good too because he doesn't require potions or micro, and is immune to Dragon fire.

OK gonna state the obvious here Merrill isn't a Rogue ? - So Merrilll id your fav party member ?

EDIT: Forget that, stupid comment by me, I now realise you meant when playing as a rogue Image IPB

How can isabella be your MVP. How does she reward your friendship with her? By forcing you to attack 10 times slower than you could be. probably an STD from sleeping with her. Slow-attackspeeditus

I think Merill is the flat out most powerful. Although for certain attritional fights Anders would win out. All in all they are pretty well balanced.

I'll take Merrill as a Rogue, meaning that I'm a Rogue, and I'll take Merrill with me. She has the best skill sets to complement a Rogue IMO.

They should change the name of this perk from "Thumbs Up" to "Deep Roads Herpes"

For me it's almost a toss up between Merril and Anders but Anders awesome Group Revive ability puts him over the top.

I'm playing a Rogue on Nightmare and for a mage Hawke with revive spells, or on lower difficulty settings maybe this is not so important. I think it would be nearly impossible for me to reach the end of the game in Nightmare without Anders.

Do you guys take control of your MVP in a bind or stick with Hawke ?

If there are a lot of normal enemies around, I'll take control of Fenris sometimes... otherwise, I just control Hawke and give commands.  It's just faster to kill large groups (especially mages) if you go all out with a 2 hander.  The computer doesn't seem that good at using "closing attacks."

Edit:  I just noticed this... ROFL... even though the actual glitch isn't funny at all...

Varric should be an MVP for everyone, he's your best sustained DPS if you're not playing archer Hawke. Bianca attacks + bonuses are just ridiculous.

Yeah, all he really did in my party was open chests and chug injury kits.  Now that I'm replaying as a rogue, he's gonna get even less love.

Merrill. For me she is a must have with her primal spell tree. Rock Armor protects her, Tempest decimates enemy groups and Petrify is very good to take stronger enemies like bloodmages out of the fight.
If you combine this with Wrath of the Elvhen and Ensare you can decimate large groups in a few moments. Ensare is also good to interrupt the enemy if you need a short recovery.

Merril is amazing if you leave her on the bench for a bit, then bust her out where you can give her 2-3 improved blood magic conversion items, and dump a huge wad of points into con (leaving her willpower at starting values).

Then she gets 25 MP from each point of constitution and/or HP, which is nuts, her nature damage AoE abilities are nuts, and because she draws from her health pool, she can run all the sustained effects you can afford. Finally, she can be diversified into whatever you what - which is nuts.

Great synergies.

Merrill, without a doubt. When trouble hits, she's my go-to girl, and she's the character that I'm controlling.

I generally stay with Hawke, but I play all characters to an extent (especially to set up combos). But when the going gets tough, I find that I'm most effective with Merrill. This is usually because she's the only one I have left standing. She's single-handedly won a few boss fights for me that way.

Bianca I mean, Varric. When things went bad he was always standing and ready to punch holes in whatever was troubling me.

I switch up my characters all the time. I will stick with Hawke if I'm not threatened.

I find Merrill to be great. She has great survivability with Rock Armor and Blood of the First means she can spam spells to her will. Primal + Spirit spells are excellent in nightmare. I can put points in constitution rather than willpower to further increase the survivability.

I find myself needing Anders the most for most parts of the game. Not only is he the only one with revive and group heal, he also has a passive that lowers the cooldown on his spells.

Aveline, Merrill and Isabella...constant companions throughout except in places they couldn't appear, such as when Isabella was out, and then I used Varric, a rogue is absolutely necessary of course. Sebastian was a weakling, and I regret that content, period. Fenris was a killing machine but just not enough room for the snotty brat.
