-Seriously, try a high-level Cunning build. Over +300% crit damage, Assassinate (autocrit), Twin Fangs (autocrit), Explosive Strike (autocrit) and Backstab (autocrit)
75% STR / 25% CON Fenris AoE Damage / Threat
25% MAG / 75% WIL Anders - Heal / Buff
50% MAG / 50% CON Merrill - Control > Damage
Merrill. Hands down.
Staff, amulet, x2 rings, belt and friendship bonus all giving her additional efficiency for Blood Magic, capping out her mana pool with sustains and giving her the following, in no particular order:
Horror +adv
Sleep +adv
Petrify +adv
Crushing Prison +adv
Winter's Grasp +adv
Cone of Cold +adv
Elemental Mastery (NOTE: GLITCHED, to avoid fire spells; she uses Cold Blooded staff)
Everyone in my team is a highly skilled specialist at what they do, save for perhaps Anders, namely because of poor healing mechanics in this game by comparison to DA:O ( I agree with toning it down, but this is knee-jerk over-nerfing ). Merrill is just the catalyst that makes the team function despite their glaring holes in everyone's styles, though, complimenting -everyone- with some form of support whenever the situation dictates. The only time she really slows down is against anything higher than a High Dragon / Vaterral, since those bosses she can still CC into submission (funniest thing to watch a Pride Demon / High Dragon cower in fear over little 'ole pixie Merrill : )

Damage +10% and the attack speed rune on the frost axe...it was just absurd

It's even funnier when she has rock armor up. It looks like she has an oversized snow coat on.

But... a close runner up would be Varric. I've lost everyone BUT him and still pulled out a victory (barely) on more than one occasion. IMO he's the best kite in the game (Bianca's Song + embellish FTW!)

When specced right (she's always 'built right'), she is a monster. Her defenses get high enough that she never dies, unless she's caught in an AoE. I have her tactics set to hit staggered elites with explosive strike (then a twin fangs), and she does enormous damage. She also serves as a fantastic off-tank to guard the squishies with access to Armistice/ Goad and the taunt from her personal tree.
Until mid-chapter two, she died constantly. Now, in the middle of act three, she's almost as survivable as my warrior.

Varric I can't get right it seems... he's always on his back on the field.

However, for all the damage they do, they can't deliver the massive AoE smashfest that Fenris can and survive the resultant aggro unless they're specced stealth. Fights were always faster for me if I brought both Isabella and Varric, but no one ever died when I brought Fenris.

Merrill is a beast. Built right, she can cast spells all day long and survive more hits than the other mages. Petrify problem enemies while you pick off the weak ones first... Chain Lightning staggered foes... it's a joy.
Exactly. Pump her con sky high and with enough blood magic boosting gear she will nearly never run out of health to cast spells.
I also heavily invest her in the Entropy Tree to get fully upgraded Hex of Torment, Horror, and Sleep.
With her Rivalry bonus + Primal Mastery + Rock Armor, Merrill can have a damage resistance of 60%. This plus her sky high health makes her a secondary tank for my party.

Varric is great later in the game for his priceless dialogue and being the bro that can get me out of strange situations without shelling out money or killing templars.

Bianca. She's a sexy killer beast.
Her unique tree also packs the most damaging skills and the best sustained in the game.
Gonna have to agree with this. Something about Varric's special tree makes him flat out impressive, at least the way I build him. I always have him in my party. Unless I'm playing a rogue, but I still try to keep him around.

I've found as I've moved up the difficulty levels Isabela's "Squishiness" has increased rapidly and I'm somewhat in the same position now as you have been. Is there anything in particular you did to improve her survivablitiy?
Currently to my shock, now that I have built Varric right and sorted out his tactics he is probably my MVP on this playthrough so far
For Varric I took the advise kindly offered in the below discussion

When Hawke is mage, Fenris, I prefer him better than Aveline ( srry for her fans) speed, damage and with a IA healer (Anders or Hawke) he never goes down ( at last on my plays)

I'm struggling a bit with Merrill. I've pumped her con high and am on the constant look out for blood mage accessories but she still seems to struggle with low health

Placing her under full-time Shield Defense, as well as some other temp buffs allows me some pece of mind that someone has a decent chance to survive. She even managed to do rather well after I once failed to replace here gear after a respec. Plus I enjoy her personality vs almost everyone; esp Isabella. Those shots she gives at the mansion just before visiting the Qun are priceless!

Really? on my 1st nightmare warrior Hawke run, she was always the last standing girl =) she saved me for many wipes >.< ( until I got a good tactic with Anders' healings XD)
