Really? on my 1st nightmare warrior Hawke run, she was always the last standing girl =) she saved me for many wipes >.< ( until I got a good tactic with Anders' healings XD)

To be honest I must have built her wrong, or set her tactics wrong

After doing a second playthrough, Anders is my MVP.
He's better than Merrill as a damager, I made the mistake of ignoring his Vengeance tree and boy was that a mistake. His Vengeance tree with Heroic Aura works really well.

Merrill is my MVP shes almost a tank but with sweet burst damage & CC.
Never ever control anyone other then hawke no matter how bad things get i spend far to much time setting up their dam tactics to be controlling them:pinched:

Isabela, for me. Both personality and gameplay-wise.
I usually play either a mage or rogue, so when I play a mage she's my lock-picker. She's also often my main damage dealer because I loving having a three-mage party. Though sometimes if Hawke is a mage I'll trade Merrill out for a warrior. If Hawke is a healer I might trade Anders out too, but Isabela never goes anywhere, even when Hawke is a dual-wielder. I just give them contrasting talents. With the Scoundrel tree and her own one, I find Isabela too useful to pass up.

Merill, no contest. With some Blood Mage gear and respeccing her Willpower into Constitution, she becomes a fantastic character who won't die the minute you look away. If she had Heroic Aura or Heal she'd become incredibly overpowered.

Sadly I'd have to say Anders (sadly because he gets on my nerves after the 1st playthrough with him). He just has great offensive as well as defensive capabilities and I just can't ever pass up almost constant haste. Used correctly the guy has the highest potential of all the characters in my opinion.

Because I prefer playing a mage, I say Fenris for me. Properly spec'd they can pretty much duo the game due to skill synergies. While he does require more mircomanagement/direct control during hard boss fights, I found him immensely more useful than Aveline in warrior role.

Well, unless it's nightmare without the no friendly fire mod. Then he just obliterates the party, Hawke included

Then again, I subscribe to a dps is king/best defence is proper offence philosophy.

HIs skill that he regains health after killing people is the mostly useful skill in the game.
As soon as you give him that, he's a killing machine.

Aveline, probably. Soaks up damage like a fiend. I rarely control her, only if I really want to get a CCC off and I need her to set it up for get out of the way. Second would probably be Varric, who just has good DPS and can finish off some CCCs with Bursting Arrow and Shattering Lance.

Anders is my MVP, unfortunately. If I had another healer for acts II & III he'd be ditched

For me, it's Isabela, not only because of gameplay (damage dealer), but because of her personality.

Coming in at a close second is Merrill; she has great survivability and crowd control, as well as providing decent damage.

Here's my two cents

Fenris:- Easily the most valuable party member when it comes to killing teammates. He's so good at it that I had to disable all his non auto attack talents out of fear my other party members would get jealous.

Varric:- Most valuble crowd warmer. This guy is seriously good at what he does. The only thing I don't understand is how he's doing it. It seems he just has to look at them. Guaranteed, within seconds, he'll be flailing wildly in some random corner with a 20 strong mob around him and screaming "this isn't going so well." Sure varric, you love it

Anders:- Most valuable healer. He is the go to guy if you are ever low on health. That is, if you can actually pry him away from dog long enough to use his heal ability. I know, I know! Gotta save the animals right? I would also like to nominate this guy for the most confused player award. Has anyone tried dating him? He'll give you some sob story about "hurting you" and not want to get involved but, if you fob him off, he will actively chase after you. TBH I think his problems stem from the fact that he doesn't seem too sure of his gender. I mean, have you heard how this guy screams when he's courting an abomination??

Aveline:- Most valuable lump of meat. Let's face it. This girls only real talent is in getting stabbed!

Isabella:- Most self centered party member. Half the time she has fenris's axe stuck in her face. The rest of the time she is doddering around in Merrill's firestorm or, my personal favourite, snapped frozen while attempting a backstab. She likes it a little too rough for me

Merrill:- Creepiest party member. I felt violated after seeing her in that elven lingerie. That slimey the worm gettup really doesn't do it for me

p.s  I voted for dog as the overall mvp.  She has not once caused me to reload.  I don't have to wait untill act III before I can bomb the crap out of her with firestorm.   I never find her flailing about prostrate in some corner.

Merrill, she's my aoe queen. For fights where things pop out of nowwhere she cleans them up ver quickly

Depends on which one of my play throughs...

On my first play through I would have to say Isabela was my MVP only because if she died the battle would take substantially longer.

This play through I would have to say it's Aveline. I need her now more then ever with 2 mages in the party(Merrill and Hawke with the basic upgrading healing spell)

Anders, if you're a mage get the upgraded healing spell and your tank is immortal (i go for Fenris then because he has higher dmg then Aveline). If you're not a mage you need a healer (if you play Hard or NM)

It depends a lot on my current character's/Hawke's class. Thinking about it though, I think Varric comes out on top for most of my playthroughs.

Merrill and Fenris together pretty much wreck anything they come across. I don't even think they need Hawke

I can't seem to decide between Varric or Anders. 3 different classes in 3 different playthroughs, I try not to leave home without these 2 guys. But in all fairness, I dropped Varric  now and then if I have to do some companion specific quests. So I guess my MVP is Mr Catlover; the trusty healer + strong damage dealer when build right and has a good tactic setup. The game is quite a cakewalk with him and Spirit Healer Hawke.

Anders. Between his zillion sustained buffs, speccing him into the Creation tree for control/haste, and his heals? He is epic win. He makes the party awesome; my mage does the explosions.

Merrill is my must have. You can make insanely powerful blood mage out of her who can laugh at assassins, cast all day long without break and have tonns of sustained buffs running at the same time.
