I'd have to say Isabella. It is IMPOSSIBLE to play a game without a good rogue, and while I prefer Varric as a character, the fact that Isabella is a melee fighter makes it easier for me to constantly have her in front dealing with traps and locks.
Awesome combo with her and Aveline and Warrior Hawke, since Isabella can wreak havoc on the enemies that swarm the Champion or the Guard Captain in "Tank" mode.

I'd have to agree with a couple of the other mages here that Fenris was my MVP. I went entropy/force mage and pull of the abyss-ed everything into a pile for him to stagger and then dropped a gravitic ring and entropic cloud on it - who needs Aveline to tank when nothing's hitting. On that note, my most devastating team of my three playthroughs (all different mage combos, entropy my favorite, spirit the least) was Fenris/Carver/Isabela at the end. I went spirit healer for the L 14 specialization, but hardly needed it - all those templars and slaves during the final fights went down so fast they were standing around waiting on respawns. Oh, this was Hard difficulty - I haven't done nightmare yet but friendly fire mechanics should prove... interesting (and actually, kinda missed from DA:O)

Fenris hands down. He has saved my squishy ass multiple times. He raged DPS and could take a hit or two without issue.
This has happened on multiple occasions. Me and my group, Varric and Anders, would be in an entirely different area of the map picking of enemies. Fenris would be all alone on the other side outnumbered 5 to 1. By the time I picked off enough to let Anders and Varric take care of the rest, Fenris was already running back. Everything dead. Its just amazing.

I used to think Anders was compulsory but on the 2nd/3rd playthrough I've discovered this is not the case. Learning curve on nightmare is a **** though.
Aveline, though, is very useful. I'd say she wins MVP. The game is harder but not impossible without her.

I have different opinions. My first playthrough (as a rogue), Anders definitely saved me multiple times. He's pretty fabulous with his panacea and healing abilities.
My second playthrough, I was a warrior. Varric was definitely my MVP. You don't have to worry about adding points to his dexterity (like you would with any other archer). You can strictly focus on cunning, health and stamina.
My third playthrough I was a mage. Fenris kicked some major ass for me. I think he's a better warrior than Aveline. I may not have had Aveline equipped with the right stuff, but Fenris did significantly more damage than her. I barely even used Anders.
Overall though, I think Varric is pretty amazing. If you're character isn't a rogue then he can get you out of some tight spots. It's helpful to play him if you get a chance to hunt for traps before an encounter. He unlocks a bunch of chests for you all the while keeping enemies in place with Bianca

I'm playing on Nightmare (except some exceptionally hard fights), and I found that Fenris is absolutely awesome: he can massacre groups of enemies with great ease. Just spend your points on Strenght and Stamina and you'll have a formidable DPSer, and a decent tank.

Although my WarHawke decimates foes as tank, Merrill is my MVP. She's adorable, AND destroys groups of foes without batting a eye? Yes, please!
