The character literally needs no change in character whatsoever, as long as they never said along the lines of "I'm straight" or "I'm gay". Its just that it really sucks not to have that. It really does. So we'd like a reason, like genuinie and well-thought out character development as for their reason. I'm sure you could find a reason (or make one up) for all the characters, its just that some have a stronger case (Jack, Miranda, Thane) than others (Jacob, Ashley)
I disagree and I've said multiple times why before, but I'm going to say it again. at least in case of ME1 romances - there are paterns of behavior, hints of atraction that they display to shepard of one gender, but not the other thought out the entire game. they act differently around a Shepard friend vs shepard love interest. so in order to beleivably show that they somehow cannot repress their atraction only about one of the genders, you have to change the character. you have to rewrite them and do it carefuly.
Absoultely correct! And I think that this writing is possible. They just did it with Tali and Garrus. I think that it'd be really interesting to see Miranda (who seems to be concerned with her fertility) act in a relationship with a woman as to with a man. While either way, there's no way in hell she's going to conceive, just knowing that MaleShep could do it, if she were in fact fertile, could really affect how everything goes. Thats just me. I know they could **** up majorly. I remember a few months back with you on the other thread with the whole Kaidan thing. Well, ignoring the fact that it wouldn't affect a FemShep playthrough whatsoever, if he were written in as bisexual, and it was done poorly, it would cheapen him up. It could, but I think Bioware could do something great as to why. Ever been to boot camp? Because thats what BAaT was. In boot camp, masculinity = law, and possibly in society, there still is the stigma that all gay/bisexual are little limp-wrists. So he really doesn't come to terms with his masculinity, along with how he dealt with Rhana, until after Shepard's ME2 death, somehow. Maybe not even until very late into ME3, or hell beyond. But I think it could be done.
that is unless you don't care if they are consistantly the same character in every game. which it seems exactly what people want. "in my game she's straight. in your game she's gay. in someone esle's game she's bi - player decides" like stepford wives.
I'll be honest and say I'm confused as to what you're getting at.
I don't think it could be done well enough by bioware. not to mention - I never got any vibe from Kaidan that he thought homosexuality was wrong, on the contrary, he is the most accepting crew member you get in both Mass effects - he's surprised by your interest in Liara not becasue he thinks homosexuality is wrong, but becasue he just didn't get that vibe from you, seeing as you've been flirting with him from the start? he wants you to make a choice not becasue he think gay is wrong, but rather because he is monogamous.
that said - he blurts things out. constantly. in order to write him beleivably as someone who develops atraction to Shepard, his character needs to be greately expanded. the change wroght by Shepard's death needs to work for both genders. but we get the letter from him and while he says he has changed, hardened..... its the same old, no pressure Kaidan.
can he be written as bisexual and be developed as a consistant character for all possible playthroughs? I used to think it was near impossible, but after chatting with Xilli a lot, I've learned to believe in 5 impossible things before breakfast. however, bioware's ability to pull of a believable character development that also involves hidden romantic feelings is not one of those things I have faith in.
In case of Garrus and Tali - at least they didn't have to work with prior relationship parameters. in case of Garrus - he doesn't feel about you that way untill you take an opening and suggest it (and he's pretty damn surprised) and even then, I have serious difficulty with the whole "having potentialy deadly sex" right before a crutial mission. in case of Tali, I feel like they handled it extremely clumsily. (btw, linking suits is something that's not just done for sex - its a gesture of trust, something that her aunt and her mother did, when Tali was about to be born) the deadly sex thing still applies.
given what we know about how bioware handles introducing fresh romantic subplots with old characters, even old characters that weren't romancable before, do you really still believe that they can pull it off for ME3? only if they decide that each playthrough is in its own vacuum and just wave away every single concern I showed you as meta gaming and your shepards shoudln't know about what happens with some other shepard anyways (even though I as a character know)
and this is where I try to explain how I feel about stepford wife situation. I don't like player determining sexuality and the general premise of npc behavior. they can influence it with their actions and words later through the game, but I do not think they should predetermine it before the game even starts.
most people feel that not inly above is ok, they want it to happen, crave it, so that they have their own perfect little SIM, perfect little stepford wife/husband to play with who will act the way THEY want them to act.
we play games differently. we play it for different reasons and we have different opinions. I'm picky. I'm particular. there's only so many plotholes and inconsitencies I can accept before going "what the hell, bioware" I know that we will be gettign plenty of those as it is. I'd rather that they didn't add even more to that.
