I've refrained from enter any rank specific tactics, instead I use generic triggers like "Enemy: Target of Hawke" or "Enemy: Highest Health". These triggers work perfectly during all encounters except when I face one of the big bosses. From having Merril casting Petrify and Varric using Goad, I end up with a bunch of companions that only auto-attack the boss - using zero abilities at all.
What is going on?

No answers, but I had not really expected any when my post got stealth-moved to this forum. Regardless, I suspect that I found the problem. It sort of looks like the companions become mindless idiots during stun-effects. I suspect that the "threat wipe" during stun also affects your companions, perhaps even the main protoganist. I.e. special attacks can knock'out the tactics.
