So I'm some 25 hours into act 1, and shortly after having gotten somewhere just above 50% friendship with both Varric and Isabella, I magically received both of the special friendship abilities, without putting points in anything.
As far as I'm concerned, these abilities don't unlock before 100% friendship.
I did respec them both at one point, could it have anything to do with that?
Either way, if this is not working as intended, please do fix for next patch.

It is working as intended. You get companion Friendship bonuses when they hit +50.

Thank you very much if this is indeed true. This doesn't appear very obvious in the manual or anything though, and dragonage wikia seems to get it wrong... hence my confusion.

Not a problem. For my first playthrough it wasn't entirely obvious either (and I wasn't sure if I needed to spend a point in it when it became available either.) But no, at Friendship/Rivalry of 50 you get it, no points needed to be spent. (On the bug side, beware of Isabella's Friendship. There seems to be a bug reported about removing her from your group eventually slowing your attack speed down. I haven't seen it yet, but there are those complaining about it.)
