I have been unable to find this information anywhere. How do I add and remove weapons and armor in each of my companions. Some of the armor bought for Aveline does on even appear in her inventory; same with Varric. Any tips or help much appreciated

There's 4 'slots' in the inventory screen, under the companion's armor that indicate the amount of upgrades they have. Also, hovering over their armor will show you their upgraded stats when you bought something for them. As soon as you buy something, it immediately upgrades the armor - you don't have to do it yourself, and the bought 'item' will, like books, never show up in your inventory.
As for Varric's weapon: he won't give up Bianca, as in: you can't change his weapon.
Armors don't change appearance unless there's a plot reason for it such as Aveline going up the ranks in the guard, and romances.

Thanks. I am completing Act I. I think I managed to upgrade the Underpadding for Aveline. But I have been unable to get the Leather Harness for Varric. I bought it from the Apparel Shop (Lowtown Bazaar) but it doesn't show up anywhere in the inventory (Varric is not wearing it) and is no longer in the Bazaar. Did I buy it too soon?
