I didn't realize that my character had this issue until after I beat the game. I noticed I had a few extra skills and the option for a third specialization but I preffered not to use them. Now I hear that having this issue causes the game to have a negative effect such as losing stats instead of gaining like a talent might suggest. I have a feeling that is why my mage struggled so dang bad throughout the game. Is there any way to fix this? I know for a fact too that I did not save the game and reload before using my abilities so I don't know why this happened. I am hoping that this is patched or can be fixed, prefferable before any DLC so that I can play my mage then. Thanks.

Just realized I posted this in the wrong place. >.> stupid me for having multiple tabs open.

I think this bug is related to having the ability in your tactics or quick buttons. I was hit with this bug on one respec, but I noticed it right away. I also noticed that the abilities that came back were in my tactics screen and on my quick buttons, so I reloaded a save prior to the respec and removed the abilities I wanted to drop from my quick buttons and tactics screen and then saved and reloaded and the bug did not reoccur.

Yeah I just noticed my rogue has the same glitch but its only 1 extra point instead of 5 and a specialization. Still I am worried it will have a negative effect again. Super lame.

Revert to an old save and do what I suggested and see if it doesn't prevent it from happening.

I am a little surprised at the number and severity of the bugs in DA 2.  I have done several closed betas and it is inexplicable how this kind of crap wasn't noticed in testing.

I reverted back an hour and a half and it seemed to have worked. I now have the usual 9 points instead of 10 to spend and I do not have the extra ability on my toggle menu. Thank you for the suggestion. I only wish I could do the same on my mage but that would require a 40 hour revert lol.

I'm not totally sure about what triggers the bug, but I don't think it is limited to your tactics. I say this because I found myself with points invested in that +100 fortitude Force Mage skill after respeccing out of the ability. Unfortunately even though it was purchased it no longer gave the +100 fortitude bonus, even after another respec and buying the ability.

I can't find anywhere on the save game editor to change my fortitude so I just changed my strength to 100 to make up for it >_>

Well you might not be able to avoid a bug with a passive ability using my method, I just know this works with activated abilities.

Somebody else had posted a long convoluted work around involving stashing all your usable items (potions), saving your game, reloading that game, respecing, saving again, reloading that game and then grabbing your potions out, but I never tested it as it seemed too involved for what I wanted to do.

All the fixes are too* involved because they are not supposed to happen. But if you don't want 80 abilites points at level 16 that work around is the only one that is confirmed to work. It was also confirmed by a dev.

I just figured something out. I reverted to my old save, everything seemed good, I didn't have lacerate which was the extra move but I just leveled up and got assassinate, but it gave me lacerate as well... I hope they fix this because I would hate to be gimp because of one extra talent that I don't use...

A dev mentioned a few days ago that they working on a patch for this and other bugs. He also said that this bug happens when you have usable items (potions, poisons, grenades, etc) in your inventory. So basically, if you want to avoid the bug, go back to your old save. Go to Hawke's storage and put every usable item into there besides Maker's Sigh. When Maker's Sigh is the only usable item in the inventory, then use it.

I completely lost the will to play after I discovered this bug. I didn't discover it until the next time that I respecced, which happened to be several hours later. I didn't have any permanent saves, so, if I want to play without five-six extra abilities and the option for a second specialization at level 10, I'll have to go back quite far.

Would it have been so damn hard to delay the game a month and fix the bugs?

if you respec again do you end up keeping those extra abilites or does it reset to the proper amount, i'm pretty sure its the latter, just respec one more time taking heed to follow the work around listed above. (and dont get so melodromatic in your posts kkthxbye)

Unfortunately the workaround doesn't fix the bug once it's happened, it just lets you avoid it in the first place.

Also, the "involved" workaround post was by me after a dev mentioned what the problem was. In reality you can skip the last save/load cycle as it's just a double-check so no one comes whining to me that their game is screwwed up and it's my fault because they didn't listen (or whatever). All you really have to do is:

1. Stash your Usable Items (potions/poisons/etc)
2. Drink Maker's Sigh
3. Respec
4. Save
5. Load

And you're ready to rock. But as always, use at your own risk. :innocent:
