I think the absence of wardens as a key part of the story affected DA2's story in the eyes of many myself included. And no, Anders plays the role of the vengeful apostate Mage, not that of the warden he was in Awakening. In any case my thoughts about the Dragon Age lore and of the world of Thedas circle around the idea of wardens finding out why darkspawn exist and focusing on their destruction as a race. Everything else seems to me like a side quest. So for now it feels like DA2 is a really big side quest but I still have hope that somehow all the pieces of the puzzles will come together in the next DA games.

It WOULD have been great to have different alternative origins stories for Hawke, but I'm 99% sure that such a thing won't even be possible for DA3 - after all, the way DA2 ends leaves little doubt that DA3 will feature Hawke as continuing his adventures; now perhaps as the central figure in the fight to bring back order into Thedas.

That would mean that DA2 IS the origin story for the hero of DA3.

I predict that Hawke does not come back in DA3. I think BioWare is trying to grow the Dragon Age lore and they are not as concerned with individuals within that Age. Individuals matter and it is important to know who some of them are, just like in any history, but what matters is the Dragon Age. There are many stories to tell in the Dragon Age and most of them, though connected in some way, will not and should not be centered around a few people. We may hear from Hawke again. But we will not be Hawke again.

It would not make any sense whatsoever for Bioware to make a storyline like DA2 had, that SCREAMS out that it's a "prequel" to something to follow, and then not follow through with it.

DA:O was an introduction into the world of Thedas - the warden's story left very few lose ends, and the ending was about as complete a "final" ending that a character can have.

In contrast, DA2 left EVERYTHING open, and the ending could not have spelled out "to be continued..." any more clearly without explicitly speling it out.

Moreover, the setup that DA2 made for Hawke made it clear that what would follow would be more "epic" than the meager story of the Champion of Kirkwall, and very clearly indicated that Hawke would play a central role in the struggles of Thedas that were to follow.

As it is, I would be about as surpriced by Hawke not returning as the hero of DA3, as I would be if FOX news suddenly turned democrat friendly.

Actually.... since we have seen a story about the Warden and we have seen a story about the Champion, Im fine with the idea of "Seeker" or whatever else that becomes the next hero rising....

Becaus eI doubt very much they will bring back both Hawke and Warden for DA3 (to the chagrin of many),

If they didnt bring back Shephard for ME3 I would have to kill myself though... =-).

I liked the story of hawke, but would have liked to import my warden and played him again... or at least created a new character like my warden... but it sounds like Im in the minority (how?) of playing an elf mage AW.... (like... where are my elf/D&D/tolkien buddies?) =p

^ The "seeker" herself makes clear that Hawke may be the ONLY person who could help Thedas back to peace.

If that isn't a promise to bring back Hawke as a central character of DA3, then it is as close to it as you can get without Bioware actually coming out and saying it in an official statement.

I see part of the reason why bioware got rid of different races due to Hawke being voiced so it would be extremely expensive and take up alot of space for all of the voice actors. But origins would be fun for one sort of race

I would like origins, but less than in DAO, so bioware could use 2 voice actors (male and female) for 3 origins: a elf, a dwarf and a human. I loved the origins but i didn´t like that with so many in the end it got diluted and it had little importance in the game, i think that with only a few it should be possible to make them more meaningful and keep the replayability of the game.

Yeah, I think, like others, that doing different origins didn't really change the outcome that much. Which means creating them was a lot of work for very little payback. Thus one race and origin in DA2.

If you want really detailed and diverse origin stories go write some and post them on fanfiction.net or pay someone to do it for you.

The different origins in Origins didn't even really make much difference. The first hour or two was great - then it was the same stuff for the most part. If they could do a voiced protagonist for six different roles (male human, dwarf, elf and their counterparts) then it would be awesome.

But I'd prefer a single voiced race to a whole platoon of nonvoiced choices personally.

So to me: race selection = good, different origins = meh, don't really care.

There is absolutely no reason why they can't make origins play a more major role in the story... Well, I guess except for cost reason, more script for the voice actors, and I assume they have to pay more for that... but just because origins didn't play a major part in DAO's game, doesn't mean there is simply no way to make it major, it just depends on if they are willing to put in the budget or not.

Personally, I'm all for making origins more prominent in the next game, and also bring them back, but I understand they may not want to do so with all the extra works/money required.

I'd love to skip the whole "Start out weak and do stupid quests to become strong" thing. It would be refreshing to roll an already powerful character and then engage in some serious role playing without tons of useless filler quests.

You have not seen the Last of the Warden or Hawke,

for those who know the ending of witch hunt, the warden disappeared with Morigan.
in da2, Hawke disappeared with LI, I believe though that thye ended up walking into someone they did not expect, namely Flemeth.....

but bringing Origins back for the next in the series....

meh... we might end up in Orlais...so its a moot point at the moment...

I think a single origin for each of 3 races would work well.

This +1000. I just hope they won't go the Origins path by making some horrid DLC and a mediocre expansion to finish Hawke's story. I love the build up at the end, the world really seems to be on fire and both the Warden and Hawke are....well, no spoilers. They better follow through!:o

Just the race selection will do. I want each game to be unique.

DA:O The Blight
DA2 the Mage V Templar war
DA3 *Insert story here*

Not:

DA:O The Blight
DA2 The Arch Demon RETURNS!
DA3 Origins 'The Darkspawn strike back'

I absolutely agree on what you say about the uniqueness of each game. After all, the franchise is Dragon Age. It is not just about the Gray Wardens or the Blight. It is about what has happened and how Thedas ha changed during the, you know. Dragon Age. In order to be the epic story of a fantasy world the Dragon Age series is supposed to be, the franchize has to focus on many conflicts and many "main characters" who shape the world in a way a single person cannot do so alone.

With that said, being able to chose your race means that we must have origins, more or less. Being a human is different than being a dwarf, which has nothing to do with being an elf. So it is either everything (origins) or nothing (no possibility to choose your race).

Yes, please bring back the origins. They help me replay the game. For example I could play a Sword and Shield guy six times and not get as tired of it because of the different origins.

Really?!? Cause I beat the game once the way I felt like I wanted and then played through every origin till you get introduced to Cailin and quit those play throughs.

As for wardens I didn't miss being a warden at all... it really did nothing for your character. All it did was give you motivation. "I'm the only Grey Warden.. I must kill all evil.. bla bla bla!!"

I really hope they don't bring origins back- another blight so soon would be silly? Well depending on when they do the next game timeframe wise anyhow- and if they done it based on your warden he would be dead and all the characters in it by the time there was another blight. Unless it had something to do with the architect finding the old gods sooner i suppose. I'd prefer the next game to be based on a new hero with new characters personally.

Please don't, unless you can find a way to keep the voiced PC and origins which is highly unlikely.
