Not sure if this is the right place, or if this has already been covered; so please bear with me:

The text of the spell indicates that it affects a single enemy, and nowhere in the spell effects or in the upgrade text/effects does it indicate that Winter's Grasp has any kind of area of effect.

Yet, things like this occur:

Now, if it's supposed to affect adjacent targets (friendly or not) then fine, I'll have to manage that in tactics or manually. But, if it's not, I would like to see it corrected.

(edit: Got the image to post correctly, I'm such an fng )

The spell has to travel from the caster to the target, my guess would be that you are standing in between the two?

no, when it explodes in the target the crystal blast can hit more than one person if they are close.
I don't remember if this is only with the upgrade or it happens defautly, but its very annoying in closed spaces.

It has a small AoE on impact when you upgrade it. Unfortunately the tooltip on it does not properly express this. (it's very obvious in the fake blightlands prologue if you make a mage because it will kill multiple enemies in one shot)

cgambleh, it this cast that is true, I'll keep a look out for that behavior. If that is how it works, I am ok with that. Obviously this is just on nightmare which has friendly fire. Can't wait to get my fortitude up, Bethany tosses me around often with firestorm, =P

Suck a bunch of critters up into a neat point with pull of the abyss and see how many you can hit at once.

Ok, nope, it's not a line of fire thing. Had Aveline get frozen when on the opposite side of the target.

(edit): Heh, thanks Luke, missed your post before putting this one in. That makes sense, I'll adjust accordingly.

Its a bit annoying not because of the AoE but because in the tactics it behaves as if its not an AoE so I cant make it so my teammates cast it when a couple of enemies are clustered together, the same is true for Shield Bash, it says single target but you can hit more than one if you line them up properly and has the same tactics problem

Wow Just noticed this new combo time!

pull of the abyss - winters grasp - do a dance - shield bash - profit

Yea I've been icing multiple targets with this spell most of the game.  Kind of like a long range cone of cold.

The AoE is very small but given the size of mobs or the joy of singularity, err umm, pull of the abyss it does get more than 1 quite a bit.

My favorite is when my own teammates perform brittle combos on me at the beginning of a fight. I've had to reload many times due to getting hit by Winter's Grasp followed by an Archer's Lance to the back of the head.

I remember this happening in the demo during the exaggerated portion but when I played a mage in the full game, I don't recall ever hitting more then one enemy at a time with a single winter's grasp spell.

Yes, it really sucks on nightmare with the upgrade. One of the reliable single target nukes made worse with a talent...

I really wish it didn't have that AoE component upon upgrade.  It's nice to have at least one spell from Elemental where, if playing with one or more melee characters, you don't have to do the little AoE shuffle so you don't kill your own team.

I have found that if an ally is on the opposite side of the target, they are more likely to be frozen. Standard melee range anywhere else is generaly safe barring shield bash animations.
