Does anyone else have trouble bringing themselves to make choices they normally wouldn't?

It's something that gets in my way a lot when achievement hunting in games with moral-choice achievements. This has happened in Mass Effect, Origins, DA2, and other games as well. In the case of DA2, I've a soft spot for the mages' side of the struggle, so I find it extremely hard to side with the Templars. I played a casual-mode playthrough where I sided with the Templars, but apparently I didn't side with them consistently enough, as I didn't get the achievement for siding with the Templars five times (I assume that's what the hidden one's for, anyway).

So I'm playing through the game again, mostly to clear out the last of the achievements (Xebenkeck, the Band of Three, A Worthy Rival, the "collect all crafting resources" one, and, of couse, the side-with-the-Templars-a-whole-flipping-lot achievement. Trophy, rather, as it's the PS3 version. I'm also having fun playing as an archery rogue for a change (I'm usually a more up-close-and-personal kinda player). But purely on instinct, I've been siding with the mages rather than the Templars. I simply could not bring myself to do anything else.

Hell, I can barely bring myself to antagonize Anders, and that's with the knowledge of what he eventually does.

Anyone else have this sort of issue, finding it difficult to make choices in games like DA2 that you wouldn't otherwise make if you weren't doing it for completionism's sake?

Yea dude. Try being mean to Bethany.

Bethany: I'm just glad to know that we had grandparents that didn't hate us.
Hawke mean response: I don't care either way.

Or something like that lol!

It can be hard to do something in a game that you naturally would disapprove of. You can remind yourself of a few things to make it easier tho. This is just a video game, nobody actually dies, any bad action can be reset and/or replayed, and you get to see more.

sort of, have a great deal of difficulty being mean to characters I like (even on second playthroughs to try for rivallry..just can't do it :P) Thats the main reason every single male GW I made either ended up with Morrigan or celibate.

I can never play a character who I don't sympathise with at least a bit. Siding with the Templars was tough, but I managed to convince myself Hawke was doing it because they believed it would save lives and thus it was OK.

I have a terrible time making choices that I wouldn't do in real life. But I will force myself to do so, when I am experimenting with the story, or forcing myself to play a hardened, don't care about anyone but me character.

I try to, but it never works, especially where mages are concerned.  I never got the achievements for siding with the Templars, here or in Origins, and I never will.  I couldn't even bring myself to rivalmance Anders, and I very much wanted to.

I did manage to sit through a youtube video of someone executing Anders at the end, though.  That's probably as far as I'll be able to go...

Why would you need an achievement? This is a role playing game. You make a personality for Hawke and you stick to that personality or alter it based on the reaction of your companions. You "live" Hawke's life and pretend you are like that.

If any sort of personality that sides with the Templars is so alien to you that you don't feel comfortable playing them, I advise against it. The point of the game is for you to have fun. Play chars you enjoy playing :)

Because I'm a raging kleptomaniac. If you know me from my YouTube doings (under my previous screen name, "Solaris Paradox"), you know that if there's something to collect, I'm damn well gonna bloody collect it.

I know that problem. For example I never finished KotOR as a Sith. How could somebody hurt Mission? Or force Zaalbar to kill her?

This was my Male Hawke (Roland), he did it to spare lives, and you even get a scene where some mages have surrendered and you can counter Meredith's "kill em all" command and Cullen will back you up.  Boy, the **** didn't like that Posted Image  As for Rivalry, it's just not in me to be a **** to people.  I got everyone to friendly that run.  And got the Xebenkek and Viscount achievements.  I don't think I can get the Rivals achievement, its just not in me.

I had this problem once and that was in DA:O. Killing Alistair is just... so hard....

It's hard to side with the Templars. I was going to give a group of apostates over to the Templars. The Templars then talked about executing them even though they'd surrendered peaceably.

They're fun.

I managed to get Unstoppable last night. Totally worth all the reloading I had to do.

You can kill Alistair?

Anyway, yes. I always have this issue in RPGs. It's easier in tabletop (for some reason). One of my favorite D&D characters was an elf shadow mage who was... well, not psychotic, but possessed of very alien priorities.

The party ended up in some city, robbed of everything but our weapons for some reason (I can't remember... it wasn't a memorable campaign, but I enjoyed this character). We came across a merchant who happened to be selling my clothes.

They were very expensive clothes.

I politely explained the situation to the merchant and asked for my clothes back. When he refused, I shot him in the face with my crossbow.

I could never do something like that in a cRPG. I don't know why, I just feel very differently about it. It's really hard for me to be mean. Maybe because the merchant felt like the DM, while NPCs in a computer game feel like they think they're real.

If you decide you want the Rivalry achievement, maybe try Merrill.  That one works well as a concerned friend who is looking out for her, and if you decide to keep the arulin holm (I'm sure I spelt that wrong) you get a great wodge of rivalry points so you can probably afford to be a bit of a softie to her generally.  Though you will have to have the mental fortitude to resist those eyes.

I usually find it hard to be mean in video games. I just sort of naturally go for the nice guy responses.

I have also had a hard time siding with the Templars on my second character. I found myself helping mages by accident because that is my natural attitude. I haven't exactly kept count, but hopefully if I side with Meredith in Act 3 I'll be able to get the achievement. It is really fitting for me to get it with this playthrough because I literally have the Templar specialization.

I agree! On one of my 6 playthroughs, I finally decided to spare Loghain just so I could experience him being in the party without Alistair. And I ended up regretting it. The rest of the game (as short as it was) just wasn't any fun for me after that.

I also tried romancing characters other than Alistar through several plays. Again, not nearly as enjoyable for me. (Though the Ser Gilmore mod romance was VERY good!) So in the end, I've decided that actually having fun with my playthroughs was far more worth my time than trying to get every single achievement.

This isn't a knock against everyone who do try to get every single achievement. Just my own personal realization that it just isn't for me.

I normally try to set a default personality for any character I create so I never run into this problem. If I played the same game 2+ times and pick the same decision again and again I don't think I would even make it through the second time.
