Does anyone else have trouble bringing themselves to make choices they normally wouldn't?

So I'm playing through the game again, mostly to clear out the last of the achievements (Xebenkeck, the Band of Three, A Worthy Rival, the "collect all crafting resources" one, and, of couse, the side-with-the-Templars-a-whole-flipping-lot achievement. Trophy, rather, as it's the PS3 version. I'm also having fun playing as an archery rogue for a change (I'm usually a more up-close-and-personal kinda player). But purely on instinct, I've been siding with the mages rather than the Templars. I simply could not bring myself to do anything else.
Hell, I can barely bring myself to antagonize Anders, and that's with the knowledge of what he eventually does.
Anyone else have this sort of issue, finding it difficult to make choices in games like DA2 that you wouldn't otherwise make if you weren't doing it for completionism's sake?

Bethany: I'm just glad to know that we had grandparents that didn't hate us.
Hawke mean response: I don't care either way.
Or something like that lol!

I did manage to sit through a youtube video of someone executing Anders at the end, though. That's probably as far as I'll be able to go...

If any sort of personality that sides with the Templars is so alien to you that you don't feel comfortable playing them, I advise against it. The point of the game is for you to have fun. Play chars you enjoy playing

Because I'm a raging kleptomaniac. If you know me from my YouTube doings (under my previous screen name, "Solaris Paradox"), you know that if there's something to collect, I'm damn well gonna bloody collect it.

This was my Male Hawke (Roland), he did it to spare lives, and you even get a scene where some mages have surrendered and you can counter Meredith's "kill em all" command and Cullen will back you up. Boy, the **** didn't like that

I managed to get Unstoppable last night. Totally worth all the reloading I had to do.

You can kill Alistair?
Anyway, yes. I always have this issue in RPGs. It's easier in tabletop (for some reason). One of my favorite D&D characters was an elf shadow mage who was... well, not psychotic, but possessed of very alien priorities.
The party ended up in some city, robbed of everything but our weapons for some reason (I can't remember... it wasn't a memorable campaign, but I enjoyed this character). We came across a merchant who happened to be selling my clothes.
They were very expensive clothes.
I politely explained the situation to the merchant and asked for my clothes back. When he refused, I shot him in the face with my crossbow.
I could never do something like that in a cRPG. I don't know why, I just feel very differently about it. It's really hard for me to be mean. Maybe because the merchant felt like the DM, while NPCs in a computer game feel like they think they're real.

I don't think I can get the Rivals achievement, its just not in me.
If you decide you want the Rivalry achievement, maybe try Merrill. That one works well as a concerned friend who is looking out for her, and if you decide to keep the arulin holm (I'm sure I spelt that wrong) you get a great wodge of rivalry points so you can probably afford to be a bit of a softie to her generally. Though you will have to have the mental fortitude to resist those eyes.

I agree! On one of my 6 playthroughs, I finally decided to spare Loghain just so I could experience him being in the party without Alistair. And I ended up regretting it. The rest of the game (as short as it was) just wasn't any fun for me after that.
I also tried romancing characters other than Alistar through several plays. Again, not nearly as enjoyable for me. (Though the Ser Gilmore mod romance was VERY good!) So in the end, I've decided that actually having fun with my playthroughs was far more worth my time than trying to get every single achievement.
This isn't a knock against everyone who do try to get every single achievement. Just my own personal realization that it just isn't for me.
