I played Mass Effect for a good 75 hours, but then out of the blue a
couple days ago it wouldn't let me open the game. I launch it, but then I
immediately get the message "masseffect.exe Has Stopped Responding" and
the only option is to close the program, and I haven't even seen the
splash screen yet. I have not changed my computer in any way which leads
me to believe it's a Steam error. I did upgrade my graphics card in
mid-February however I have played the game for a good 15 hours between
then and now.

My computer specs:

Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4Ghz

6GB DDR2 RAM

nVidea GeForce GTX 460 SE

Windows Vista Home Premium

I have tried:

- Disabling anti-virus

- Disabling Steam community in-game

- Disabling UAC

- Running the game in compatibility mod for Windows XP

- Running masseffect.exe as administrator.

Help would be great :D

Have you verified the game cache via Steam?

I'm fairly certain I did, however I'll try it again.

It does sound like a corruption of some manner. Do a disk check on the appropriate hard drive. You could also try clearing out "My Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect\\Config" (just delete the .ini files) and see if that helps. Other than that, short of a total reinstall, I am unsure.

I tried verifying the cache and it didn't help, I will try to see if any files are corrupted and delete the .ini file. Otherwise I'll try a total reinstall, thanks for the help so far :D

I'm having a very similar problem...

Played the game before Spring Break, it worked fine. Went home, came back, and it is messing up now. Literally nothing has changed on my computer as far as software/hardware other than Steam updates.

I currently run:
Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit
Intel Core2 Quad Q9450 @ 2.66 GHz
4.00 GB ram
nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX

-All graphics card drivers are up to date
-Game Cache just validated

I was having this issue once before when I first installed the game. According to the NVIDIA control panel there is a graphics compatability issue with my graphics card when dynamic shadows was enabled. I disabled it from the options on the main menu and the game ran fine for over 37 hours now. Now it is having the same issue again where the game suddenly becomes jumpy, doesn't save, and sometimes just randomly crashes.

I noticed that it seems like when I opened the game after the steam update, all my settings files had been reset. I have tried enabling/disabling dynamic shadows again, and the problem persists.

I wonder if it's a problem with Steam... I'll try disabling dynamic shadows though. Thanks for the insight.

EDIT: Dynamic shadows doesn't help. My game wont even boot up, I click "Play" in Steam, and immediatly I am informed that "masseffect.exe has stopped responding."

Can you check it is running version 1.02? What driver version? I recommend NVIDIA drivers 197 series for Mass Effect on Windows 7 (drivers that are too new are not always good for old games).

Since wiping the ini files didn't work and the game *has* worked before I can only suggest completely wiping it clean and going from scratch next, if fiddling with drivers doesn't help. There is also the shader cache in the Mass Effect configuration tool (under 'repair'), but I doubt that would do anything.

@ Komania: Running the latest drivers is often a bad idea when it comes to older games like ME. Newer drivers often incorporate tweaks designed work with newer games, and can play hovoc with the older ones. Disable Steam's ability to update drivers, and manually download and install the 260.99 (Oct 2010) drivers from nvidias website:
http://www.nvidia.co...hql-driver.html

@MasterofMithril: Same thing, disable Steams ability to update your drivers. I wouldnt recommend anything newer than the 258.69 revision if you want to play ME. Anything newer can just cause problems.

How do I disable Steam's ability to update drivers?

EDIT: My graphics card is apparently "not compatible" with the driver you linked. I have the SE, which is probabl the case.

Not sure, quick research shows Steam can only do it for ATI/AMD cards at the moment, so you might not have to worry.
I dont use Steam myself as in Australia we dont have any decent ISP's with unlimited downloads, and most games would take up a months quota with ease.

I'm from Canada, and I'm in the same boat. I have to choose carefully what games to download so I don't go over my 60GB limit.

Here is a link to the driver archive for nvidia cards. Should be able to find a compatible driver in there for your card, hopefully.

@Bogsnot1

Thanks for your suggestion. Today I tried downloading the driver you linked and played through a little bit of the game. After installing the drivers, the screen does not freeze or randomly jump as much anymore which is a definite improvement. I can also quicksave again, which was not possible before. However, whenever I try to create a new save file from the menu screen the game still freezes. I hear the sound bit that happens after the save normally finishes, but the screen remains frozen and locks up the computer so that even ctrl+alt+delete and windows+d won't get me out of it. Any ideas?

I found an older update, I will install it shortly.
