Why are Arcane Horrors better than me?

I have had no problem with fights (High Dragon being the exception) since I started the game on Hard (for ****'s I know) and I am finishing up loose ends before I beat the game.  I ran across a few tough fights but nothing serious, but I ran into this Arcane Horror WHO HAPPENS TO BE GOD'S DIVINE WRAITH UPON HUMANITY!!!  The damn thing instantly kills Anders and Varric, then proceeds to destroy Merrill and Hawke.  I don't really understand it neither, I have a good tank setup, good Merrill dps setup, Standard-ish Anders healer setup, and Varric for lols and I am still getting my ass handed to me.

They're heavy hitters, that's for sure. And Horrors don't bubble up like other casters. I'd recommend hitting hard and fast with as much damage as you can while keeping it locked down with Petrify, stuns, and other effects. If that won't work, put as much distance between you and the Horror as you can. Take out its minions from safety or lure it to a disadvantaged position.

It's that death cloud that they cast.  It'll just whipe out anyone in it's radius.

Spread out if you can, but they are fairly weak and if you can lock it down you should be set.  Don't worry about anything else just put full attention on it.

Stone Fist can be really helpful.  It will knock pretty much anything and it casts fast.  So if Merril has that which I think she does, hit'em with that first to give you some time to move in or lock him down with other attacks.

I take the same tactic as Lazuli, doing my best to rip them apart before they get a chance to teleport, focus fire is your friend. (btw, isn't moving through space one of those things that isn't supposed to work according to the IP? Maybe they actually turn invisible and move really fast?)

I'm guessing this was the named Arcane Horror in Wounded Coast that you fight as part of the first Arwegian Scroll? I always found the two Revenants at the same time as part of Scroll 2 (or 3?) to be harder :(

Thank god you can petrify, freeze and what not. I focus everything on them and keep a steady stream of things that will immobilize them so they can't cast focused on them - it helps to have 2 mages for this approach.

I just ran into one that you fight after fiding a scroll.  He got me on the first battle, but the 2nd time I got him with petrify and it was all over.

Merril drops some hexes and he drops fast with the full weight of my party slamming him.  There were a load of shades that came out.  Low health ones so they weren't too bad.  Only half of my team died, but I probably could have avoided that if I played a little safer instead of standing there toe to toe. :)

Archer Assassin/Duelist Hawke, Merril dps/control, Avaline tank for me. I see a caster I proceed to mark of death, Assassinate. By then Avaline will shield slam and stagger him. Merril pops chain lightning and Hawke follows up with vendetta if needed to further exploit the CCC. I've yet to seen a caster or assassin survive it.

I remember this named horror. He wiped my party several times (on nightmare). As has been mentioned, you need to stun him or petrify so that he does not cast his death cloud. I find the grenades work best since no one except those enemies that are immune to stun can resist it.

The challenge is to survive long enough to get close enough to stun him. At least on nightmare, he casts his death spell immediately and usually right on top of clustered party members.

Kiting his adds and finishing them off first works though not as fun as rushing.

Casters in general are on/off and easy in DA2. Typically they always force a reload with their instagib AoE attacks, and once you've done that and know what to expect, a simple dispell & stun & focus fire will completely destroy them in an instant. Even the named ones. It's rather redundant in my opinion, as I would like for some cool spell battles but the nature of their completely overpowered spells and extremely low hp just makes them these one-time wonders forcing a reload every now and then.

I just use an upgraded petrify and then focus all my heavy single-target dps on them. They're usually dead by the time petrify wears off. That's on hard at least, haven't tried nightmare yet.

On my rogue just doing Assassinate kills them in one hit.
