I still can't believe how inane the thing with Bethany was handled.

Going through on my rogue run, I appreciated having Bethany around more than Carver. When Cullen said he was taking Bethany, I chose the "Batman" (aggressive) option, and then watched the protagonist step aside as the templars took his sister away to prison.

It was ridiculous. After slaying an Abomination Profane and destroying the Ancient Rockwraith, you're telling me that two templars were going to threaten his little sister? And in Act II, Hawke doesn't say a damn thing to Cullen about Bethany - I thought the protagonist would try to rip off that templar's head for taking his baby sister away, but instead Hawke acts a fool and doesn't give a damn about what Cullen did. Cullen should have met the murder knife.

All part of this lovely story about the railroad and how you can't get off the train or even change its direction. I really don't remember Origins feeling that way at all.

Of course.  After the bru-ha-ha with the epilog slides and DAA, Bioware has figured out that they don't want us dirty players messing with their pristine story.

Interactive Movie versus cRPG... DA2 comes across as just a story we can interact with, but are being told, not as a story we have any say in creating.  DA:O had the feel of the protagonist driving and shaping the story.

That happens to me sometimes.  Then it stops for no discernable reason.

I think it's because fighting could well have ultimately led to a much larger squad of templars killing the entire Hawke family.

I'd rather have been able to affect the story.  There are lots of things I feel improved in DA2 mechanics-wise, but I much prefered being able to immerse myself in Origins and have it make sense.  I wasn't presented options that didn't go anywhere.  It'd be like having Bhelen and Harrowmont on the dialog wheel but no matter which you chose, Orta would become Queen.

That's weak.  Gamlin does not live that far from the docks.,  Kill Cullen and his hench-Templar, and Hawke (who by this time should be 13th to 14th level) is more than bad arsed enough to cut a path to the docks and get  her on a ship if necessary...especially if Varric and Isabella handle the smuggling connections.

Time to leave Kirkwall then.  There's nothing in Kirkwall worth sacrifcing Bethany's freedom for.  If I was in Hawke's position I wouldn't even need to think about it.  Bethany > staying in Kirkwall even if it means giving up the Deep Roads treasure.

Oh, as for the logging out thing, try emptying your cookies.  At least for this site.  Always fixes it for me, though obviously you've gotta log back in one more time after.

Yep, and given your share of the deep roads treasure, you could afford some HEFTY bribes....

What's right in the way of the docks? The Gallows.
The exit would need to be extremely fast, not to mention that it would put Gamlen at risk (meaning he could sabotage it) and reduce the Hawke family to refugees again, and that's if it succeeded. There's a decent possibility that the templars would kill them all. And Bethany already dislikes the fact that her family's needed to run around so much to protect her; would she really want this?

Actually the Gallows are on an island in the middle of the Harbor, and quite honestly at this time the people in Lowtown won't give the Templars the time of day.  Get Beth into the Docks and/or sewers and she's gone especially with the Deep Roads treasure to grease palms.

They should have concocted a better story around Bethany being taken. It just doesn't fit that Hawke wouldn't do anything to keep or free Bethany from the Templars. Better would have been a cut scene showing her being taken from Gamlen's house while you were away and your mother couldn't fight them.

Have any of you seen the short story that Hepler wrote about Anders merging with Justice? It's quite short and somewhat enlightening.

Anyway, how did they even know she was a mage? She was trained to hide her abilities, and I doubt Templars can sense these things.

I've read the short story, GavrielKay. I thought that Anders decision to merge with Justice had a lot to do with what was happening to Karl in Kirkwall. I'm surprised that a templar was allowed to join the Wardens, even if the Warden-Commander was pro-mage (although I suppose this could be what Stroud meant when he said that he's "even" with Anders in the Deep Roads if he was handling things while the Warden-Commander was in Amgarrak).

I read the short story, and I know how MY Warden-Commander/Maleficar would have handled it.  He would have killed Anders outright for being an abomination and he would have killed the Templar Warden for the mess he caused and then sent off a VERY SHARP word to the First Warden to in the future to butt out of his business in Fereldan or replace him.

-Polaris

Edit PS:  I thoght the short story was an extremely ham-fisted attempt to justify the new Anders.

Her plot armor wore off when you were in the deep roads and the templars suddenly remembered that she cast magic.

damn... all those fireballs she hurled into the night sky and wants to continue hurling in front of the oblivious Templars now don't mean anything anymore.

I think Cullen stole Bethany's plot armor and wore it so that we couldn't kill him and keep our sister.

Oh... just wait. Somewhere along the way of the Dragon Age franchise he will lose his plot armor and I'll be right there to show him the errors of his way. Nobody touches Bethany and lives. Posted Image
