The only two skills in Shadow worth the investment are the 25% Critical Passive and Decoy. (Decoy is pretty sweet). Shadow Veil is fun, but it takes way too many points as well as a bunch in Subterfuge to get the right synergy.
Dueling gives you the passives and Vendetta. Vendetta does half the damage of Assassinate AND warps you across the screen.
Either build can be fun, but I think Duelist wins out for the burst damage and mobility it provides. Near the end game you aren't spending much time stealthed, you're just killing non-stop.
I like to take the DW tree for Twin Strikes even though the rest of the tree is meh. Three burst damage attacks are awesome for burning down assassins or enemy leaders.
Shadow, Duelist or Assassin?

Subterfuge-heavy Shadow build is a lot of fun, but it's not ideal. Still, I don't regret it.

Assassin is the highest damage one like everyone said. And don't forget Mark of Death.
Shadow is really fun, you don't need to pick every talent though, just the few key ones and no one will attack Hawke and you can just stab whoever you want. Decoy is great, watching enemy assassin vanish and backstab your decoy while you laugh and walk up and gank them is priceless.
Duelist is...flashy, Vendetta + back to back is fun, throw the Gauntlet to someone face and watch them beeline at you for their own death, too funny!
Cameleon's Breath + Disorienting Criticals is good enough, don't even need stealth since you have decoy. Inconspicuous alone pretty much makes you worry free of enemy attack anyways.

Did the standard duellist-assassin for my first rogue, pretty much as expected. Crazy single target burst damage.
I’m doing duellist-shadow on my 2nd rogue and it’s surprisingly good. Assassinate obviously has better single target burst damage, but Shadow has much better constant damage and has a big advantage in AE damage and AE CC (which is non-existent with Assassin). +25% crit damage passive +25% crit damage while obscured (which is always) and autocrit while flanking (again, almost always) gives you very high damage in between cooldowns. Decoy
is also one of the better CC’s in the game, and does excellent AE damage.
My Assassin is definitely better vs bosses. My Shadow is definitely better at large groups (except for Arishok, Decoy trivializes this fight).
